The Tiffen 72mm 81D Light Balancing Filter helps to decrease the color temperature by 500K in order to warm the image slightly in order to match the color quality of illumination. When using an 81D filter, you will be able to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3700K. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.6-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this fit a Nikon 80-400 VR AF lens?

A: yes, check lens specs, Filter Thread, Front: 77 mm

Q: 2. Can this filter be used with a lens hood?

A: I have the filter for my Canon 70-200 and NO, the lens hood cannot physically fit over the filter.

Q: 3. What size lens cap do I need?. I have been told that a 82MM lens cap is the right size as the front portion of the filter is made bigger to insure the filter does not vignette.

A: The front thread on that filter is 86mm an 82mm is too small. The only type of cap that will work is a push on lens cap and in most cases it will be a bit looser than a regular snap on cap. This one should be about the best fit, a href= http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN./a

Q: 4. Does this filter fit on 77mm Canon 24-105 f4/L? Or I should some other?

A: I think Canon 24-105 f4/L has 77mm filter thread. This filter should work.

Q: 5. Wil; this filter work with a Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens ? Also, will I get the notorious X-pattern at 18mm?

A: The Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is compatible with the Nikon 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 lens. The "X" pattern only occurs when the filter is rotated beyond the 8 stop range (beyond the limit for the filter).

Q: 6. I was wondering if I could attach this unit to a General Brand 77mm Screw-In Rubber Wide Angle Lens Hood. Also, what size lens cap do I need for this filter?

A: Hi, it should fit into a rubber wide angle hood if it has another inner screw threading for a filter. and the size lens cap I use is any 77mm lens hood.

Q: 7. I usually use 0.9 Tiffen ND filters for DSLR video. I am able to get a shallow aperture in bright conditions. How much more beneficial would this filter be for me for video, as well as photography?

A: I can't help you with the video, but I use it a lot in my still photography because it gives you maximum creative control in/of such a wide variety of light conditions. Reduce depth, slow the movement of water or action or whatever as little or as much as you want - with one filter. I used to have to carry a number of ND filters and then it was an on-off affair until I found the one I wanted - by which time the light had often changed! The filter's quality is excellent and the filter is really smooth to operate. Yeah, it's pricey - but not when you consider that it's replacing three or four fixed ND filters in the range it covers. I hope I helped you. Good luck with your search. (Can't go wrong with B&H either. I've been a customer for over 30 years.)

Q: 8. Is this compatible with an e-mount Sigma 50mm? I can seem to get it to thread onto my lens.

A: Yes, it is compatible.

Q: 9. If I have a sigma 18-35 f/1.8 will I still be able to attach a lens hood to the front with this ND filter on?

A: Noah... the Tiffen VND filter ring is larger than the diameter of your lens. This is done to prevent vignetting in images. Unfortunately, it will not allow a lens hood to attach.

Q: 10. What size lens cap do I need for the 67mm filter?

A: You will need a 77mm lens cap for this filter.

I am impressed with the build quality for the price and have been surprised and delighted with the low level of vignetting and color cast. Indeed, the IQ has been superb even when maxing the filter out to the full 8 stops. One word of warning, the Tiffen does not have hard stops at its maximum and minimum settings so keep a close eye to avoid the infamous X pattern.

Just started using it but I love it. I took some shots of waterfalls and rapids and they look very professional even tho I'm an advanced amateur at best. My only complaint is that I'm not able to use my lens hood while the ND filter is on.

Excellent filter, allows me to focus on lowest filtering factor (2 stops), then rotate the front element to my desired amount of darkening (up to 8 stops, total), giving me excellent control of light. Very useful for effects requiring slow shutter speeds. Great price!

Just got this a few weeks ago and it's already saved me a few times: in capturing video in the middle of the day, and also in using strobes. Nice to be able to have another way to control the amount of light coming in. Adjustment ring is very smooth and feels solidly constructed.

I use it on my DSLR to shoot outdoors and open the aperture to 4 or greater. I was concerned it wouldn't have the quality needed compared to a B + W Filter of same type for 4 times the price, but I have found that to be untrue - this does the job fine. It is true there is no stop start ring on the filter but the dots on the filter are good enough. Works even in the brightest of light where you would be at f22 to bring the aperture down to 2.8 or 1.8. I would get his one over a smaller one like a 67 mm, as with step down rings this will work with all your lenses - I dont own a 77 mm lens, but I do own a 52 through 67mm and rent some that are 77mm, so this will work with all of those. Step down rings are cheap, like $5 where as a filter for each of the lenses is $$$.
