The Tiffen 55mm Soft/FX 1/2 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 1/2. Grades of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Q: 1. A lens this good, you should rightfully list camera bodies as an accessory. I'm a Canon guy for 40 years, but if I buy this lens, Nikon might be the best choice of camera. What is the best match?

A: Probably this answer is too late for you, but I'm being careful about evaluation of this lens. I'm using it on a Nikon D800e, and it's performing beautifully, especially for night shots where the specular highlights are well contained and don't seem to bloom on the sensor . The only drawbacks I've found is it's not macro, it's not weather sealed, and the cost has diminishing returns. I understand the trade-off for not having macro focus; increasing the focus range would reduce the precision of focus in the normal range, and also probably complicate the movement of the internal elements. Not sealing it against moisture makes sense if the intended use is in the studio.Still, there is some truth to the hype. The coupling to the in-focus indicator is better than any other manual focus lens I own including a Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100. Because digital cameras are dependent on auto-focus, they do not come with optical focusing aids. Focusing is accomplished either normally through the viewfinder--something I find difficult to do with precision--using live view--which can be done with a tripod and relatively static subjects--or with the focus indicator. The clarity and contrast of the image produced by this lens allows it to be used with the focus indicator on the D800e, an important practical feature.

Q: 2. Hi.Is the lens hood integrated or separate?Thanks.

A: The lens hood is separate and is included with the lens.

Q: 3. I understand that the focusing screen of D810 cannot be changed. Without a central telemeter, how can one check proper focusing?

A: If you are concerned with focus on the D810, you could use the Nikon DG-2 Eyepiece, which will magnify the viewfinder by 2x: http://bhpho.to/10diQr9

A: Yes, the lens features a focus confirmation chip to indicate when the subject is in focus with the camera. - Yossi

Q: 5. Does this lens have CPU coupling which provides aperture, program AE priority, aperture priority, shutter priority or manual exposure settings on camera models equipped with an electronic interface as my D800E ? Thank you.

A: Yes, this lens has CPU coupling, and will communicate the distance and metering. However, it will only focus manually.

The optical quality is extremely high, on a par with much more expensive German-made filters. The metal mounts are somewhat less smooth and robust in comparison. Nonetheless, these Tiffens screw into the lens threads very easily. Also, the design allows enough clearance between the filter glass and topmost bulge of the front lens element.
