The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Standard zoom designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.

A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Weather-sealed design, a rear rubber gasket, and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements are able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what is the difference between this lens and Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Lens?

A: The AFS lens if for Nikon DSLR cameras and the Z lens is for the Nikon mirrorless system.

Q: 2. I was wondering if this Nikon 24-70mmf2.8E ED VR lens is compatible with the Nikon D500 camera. Which I know is a DX format camera with the 1.5 crop factor. But I know that you can use some FX format lens on the D500 camera. And I was just wondering if this lens is compatible with this camera. Thank You!

A: The 24-70 will work fine on the D500. However, it is a large and heavy lens. You might want to consider the 16-80mm DX zoom.

Q: 3. Where is this lens manufactured?

A: Unfortunately, Nikon has yet to provide us with that information.

Q: 4. I am finding it very difficult to mount filter on this lens. The threads are too tight. I have three filters from B+W, Ice and Tiffen - all faces the same challenge. Anyone else having this issue?

A: I only use genuine B+W slim profile filters with brass rings made in Germany. They fit fine and don't bind despite tight thread tolerances. I've changed out UV and polarizer units numerous times without a filter wrench.

Q: 5. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon D850 camera and was wondering about what would be a good first lens to buy for this camera. I was thinking of either the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mmf2.8E ED VR lens or the Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/1.4 E ED lens and I just wanted to know which one would be the better choice. These are both great lens and I'm having a hard time making up my mind. Price wise there more or less close in price to one another. But I want to know which one would be the better choice and for what reason. Or would there be another lens that someone could recommend instead of these 2 choices. Thank You!

A: I feel like that's trying to answer whether pizza or ice cream is better! ;) These two lenses are pretty significantly different, so it depends what you're going to shoot. The 105 is smaller and a little lighter, and captures and extra f-stop of light. But it's a fixed resolution lens; does that length suit what you'll be shooting? Is this going to be your only lens for the time being? For *me*, the 24-70 is much more versatile, and giving up one f-stop isn't critical (especially with a camera as good as the D850) -- but that doesn't mean it's better for *you*; it depends how you're going to use the camera and what you're going to shoot.

Q: 6. Is this lens, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens, weather resistant or weather sealed? We plan on using it outside almost exclusively.

A: I have used its predecessor in hard rain all day, in snow all day, in 30 below zero all day, and I expect this version to hold up as well. However, I'm beginning to show signs of wear.

Q: 7. Hi, For landscape photography is a lens collar required? I would use this lens with the D750. By the way I noted someone asked where the lens is manufactured. I believe in Japan. Thanks.

A: I have a Nikon D810 I didn't use a lens collar with this lens. The lens isn't heavy, easy to carry all day. No problem with capturing the best shot not using a lens collar. I believe this lens is manufactured in Japan not 100% sure.

Q: 8. How's this lens for indoor lower light events with Nikon D750?

A: I just put this lens and have been taking it through its paces. I set the ISO to 1600 and the aperture to 2.8. You can shoot In virtually near darkness

Q: 9. Any ETA when this lens will be available again?

A: Sorry, but we do not have a definite date of availability. Hopefully soon.

Q: 10. does it works if a ftz adaptor on the z6?

A: Yes you can use this lens on the z6 with the ftz adapter.

Never liked the old version and sold it in 2009 and waited for the re-make. Its much better from the wide end and across the image over all. Some say its softer from 60mm, but this may also be an advantage for portraits. This does not bother me though as I have many primes for portrait use. Very happy to of got the lens!

Replaced my previous non-VR version. One week intensive tested with my Nikon Df in action, landscape, close-ups, low-light and high ISO in all f/ ranges. Conclusion: Extremely sharp, fast and totaly silent focus and VR. VR helps by 3/4 stops. Worth for every extra penny.

I use this lens for sports and event photography and find the focusing to be much faster and more accurate. Image quality seems better than the old version. I got excellent results shooting in low light at 1/15 sec on D4s using the VR. The lens feels sturdier than the old model and is very comfortable in my hand. While it is a little larger and heavier than the G version, I don't really notice that due to the solid feel, and comfortable fit. It feels like it is one with the camera and with me and that you want to leave it on the camera. I did find the lens hood a little difficult to install and remove and that may be due to the B&W filter I am using since the Nikon filter is not yet available. This lens will definitely improve my results and I am very happy I decided to get it. I have often seen unreliable focus and exposure uniformity when taking a rapid fire series of fast moving shots at competitive acrobatic events with the old version and feel this will be improved or fixed with the new lens based on results so far.

I purchased My first Nikon product 48 years ago and it still operates flawlessly. When I attached this new 24-70 to my D4 I could sense immediately that this lens is a part of that heritage - the result of a tradition of excellence. The build quality is communicated by the balanced feel in my hand. The controls perfectly placed and their movement smooth and flowing. My first frames were in a difficult lighting situation in the garden. The focus was virtually instant and totally silent. I tried all options, flawless and ran through the zoom from wide to slightly telephoto. The images are crisp edge to edge and the color rich with a delicate range of tone. I know my grandson will be proud to use this lens 48 years from now.

Works great on my D4s. I did have to adjust the fine tuning of this lens on my D4s. Once i did, the images are Incredible and sharp close up. attached is a shot from about 1.5 feet away. see what you think.

I read a lot of mixed reviews on the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR. I must have owned a 100,Nikkor over time, and used even more, but this is the best lens I have used in terms of every aspect being just about perfect. The only two things are the size and weight, but welcome to all that glass. It accurately renders everything I've shot with perfection on my D810. Sharp, great realistic color and contrast, and awesome bokeh. It is a lot of money, but dang if it isn't a killer lens. The rendering of images is consistent with the 14-24mm f/2.8. If you need line charts and mtf ratings to buy a lens, I think you will be misled about this lens. It is just perfect for the real shooter.

Been holding out on purchasing a mid-range zoom for years and finally bit the bullet to round out my 14-24 and 70-200. It's expensive and a beast, but amazing glass. Focus is quiet (almost silent), fast and sure and the images are unbelievable. Nothing more or less than you'd expect from a pro Nikon lens. Glad I made the purchase and look forward to using it on my next assignment.
