The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Standard zoom designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.

A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Weather-sealed design, a rear rubber gasket, and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements are able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. just in case I wanted to use this lens on a tripod does it have a tripod mode?

A: As per Nikon this lens does have a tripod mode, that is the VR system automatically detects that you are using a tripod which effectively shuts down the VR while using a tripod, similar to you manually turning off VR when using a tripod with older versions of VR.

Q: 2. Is anyone using this lens on a Nikon D-810?

A: I do. I bought this lens new from B&H. I use it on a D810 and D850. The lens itself is superb. It is awesome in every respect when attached to either camera. I know what I am talking about. I do not exaggerate. I am a pro who owns two Internet sites who demands uncompromising quality. Peter Mancus

Q: 3. I shoot with the D800E and camera firmware A-1.01 B-1.02 L-1.006 Is this camera firmware updated enough for the D800E to be compatible with this item?

A: I use the D810 and have had no issues.

Q: 4. Hi, For landscape photography is a lens collar required? I would use this lens with the D750. By the way I noted someone asked where the lens is manufactured. I believe in Japan. Thanks.

A: I have a Nikon D810 I didn't use a lens collar with this lens. The lens isn't heavy, easy to carry all day. No problem with capturing the best shot not using a lens collar. I believe this lens is manufactured in Japan not 100% sure.

Q: 5. Is this lens, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens, weather resistant or weather sealed? We plan on using it outside almost exclusively.

A: I have used its predecessor in hard rain all day, in snow all day, in 30 below zero all day, and I expect this version to hold up as well. However, I'm beginning to show signs of wear.

Q: 6. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon D850 camera and was wondering about what would be a good first lens to buy for this camera. I was thinking of either the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mmf2.8E ED VR lens or the Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/1.4 E ED lens and I just wanted to know which one would be the better choice. These are both great lens and I'm having a hard time making up my mind. Price wise there more or less close in price to one another. But I want to know which one would be the better choice and for what reason. Or would there be another lens that someone could recommend instead of these 2 choices. Thank You!

A: I feel like that's trying to answer whether pizza or ice cream is better! ;) These two lenses are pretty significantly different, so it depends what you're going to shoot. The 105 is smaller and a little lighter, and captures and extra f-stop of light. But it's a fixed resolution lens; does that length suit what you'll be shooting? Is this going to be your only lens for the time being? For *me*, the 24-70 is much more versatile, and giving up one f-stop isn't critical (especially with a camera as good as the D850) -- but that doesn't mean it's better for *you*; it depends how you're going to use the camera and what you're going to shoot.

Q: 7. does it works if a ftz adaptor on the z6?

A: Yes you can use this lens on the z6 with the ftz adapter.

Q: 8. What is the difference and benefits over the G series?

A: The main benefit would be that the new version of the 24-70mm f/2.8 has VR. Though, looking at the MTF charts for both lenses, the optical design of the new lens has also been improved upon.

Q: 9. what is the difference between this lens and Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Lens?

A: The AFS lens if for Nikon DSLR cameras and the Z lens is for the Nikon mirrorless system.

Q: 10. I was wondering if this Nikon 24-70mmf2.8E ED VR lens is compatible with the Nikon D500 camera. Which I know is a DX format camera with the 1.5 crop factor. But I know that you can use some FX format lens on the D500 camera. And I was just wondering if this lens is compatible with this camera. Thank You!

A: The 24-70 will work fine on the D500. However, it is a large and heavy lens. You might want to consider the 16-80mm DX zoom.

Excellent short zoom lens. I've used this lens for many events. Very versatile when using the 24mm, when it comes to small rooms, where a wide angle is required. I highly recommend this zoom lens.

The new locking mechanism for the lens hood is amazing, and the way it allows for the zoom extension to pass through the inside of the hood instead of extending the hood out helps so much with maintaining the scale of the build. The lens is incredibly sharp for a zoom and the stabilization is unlike any lens I've used before.

Only drawback, there is a bit of a drag or a very subtle and gentle grind when zooming in and out, but I believe it's just from all of the components being stabilized. Have not had any issues with focus so I'm confident this is just a factor of the build and not anything that's been damaged.

I've retired from my gigs as a professional photographer, but still appreciate quality equipment. One of my most used lenses was the excellent 28-70mm f2.8 AFS, but that lens met an untimely end when it popped out of my open camera bag as I jumped down from a lift I was using to photograph a charity event. I seriously considered having the 28-70mm AFS repaired, but also knew that I would appreciate the wide end of the 24-70 VR. I had never made the switch to the G version of the 24-70 because the wider end of that lens would have been a step down in quality compared to the 28-70. Based on the reviews, which all said that the 24-70 VR was much better at the wide end, I decided to give it a try. I had read many of the reviews of the 24-70 VR, and so had an idea of what to look for when evaluating the lens. Many reviews complained of softer images at shorter focusing distances and of significant focus shift. Several reviewers also stated that when attempting to fine tune the AF of their lens, they came up with significantly different values for the wide and long ends of the zoom. The individuals that gave the lens rave reviews seemed to have received lenses that were essentially spot on when checking AF fine tune, and didn't show enough focus shift to be concerned about in actual shooting. I'm happy to report that my lens tested spot on with extremely accurate AF when checking fine tune. I didn't see any difference when testing the wide or tele ends of the zoom. I also didn't see any focus shift at my normal shooting distances. Image quality is an improvement over my 28-70, but the most significant difference comes from the extremely accurate and consistent AF, along with the vibration reduction. I have no doubts that this lens will significantly improve my keeper rate for the types of photography I intend to use it for. Highly recommended.
