Spanning a long, versatile zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon is a telephoto zoom characterized by a constant f/5.6 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. Also contributing to improved image quality, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/5.6 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range.

Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.

A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions where panning and other lateral camera movements are more common.

A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

The following cameras are compatible with this lens: D5, D4 series, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the tripod collar have an Arca QR foot?

A: No, but you can purchase a replacement collar that is Arca-compatible from other sources such as Kirk Photo.

Q: 2. Will the 200-500 work on a d300 ?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f5.6 E ED VR lens is fully compatible with the D300 camera.

Q: 3. Does this lens get longer as you zoom out?

A: This lens is internal focus but not internal zoom. It does not change length when you adjust focus but does change length when you zoom; when you adjust the focal length.

Q: 4. compatable with D3500?

A: Yes it is fully compatible with the D3500.

Q: 5. Is this fully compatable with a D300?

A: Yes, this is fully compatible with a D300 and all other second generation Nikon DSLRs, 2007 and later. Remember the D300 is a DX body and has a smaller APS sensor. This 200-500mm lens is full frame (FX), which projects a larger image across the smaller sensor...resulting in images created from the optically superior center sweet spot of the lens. Relative to full frame, your focal range is magnified 1.5X, so 200-500mm becomes 300-750mm.

Q: 6. Is this lense compatible with Nikon dx3300?

A: Nikon uses their standard 'f mount' and it should fit just fine. I use mine on a D700 and D810. Be aware of the x1.6 crop sensor on DF cameras when using FX lenses

Q: 7. Seems too cheap. I have the new 80-400 and I can get 560mm effective with the tele 1.4III at f5.6. That would have better results and zoom range to me?

A: The 80-400 with 1.4 tele has a f8 aperture at 560mm. The 200-500 has constant f5.6, so you can add the same 1.4 tele and get 700mm and f8. No one outside Nikon knows what the performance will be yet, but one would suspect that the bare 200-500 SHOULD be better than 80-400+1.4 tele.

Q: 8. Can the Nikon 1.4 converter be used with the new 200-500 and auto focus?

A: compatible Nikon 1.4x, 1.7x or 2x E series Teleconverters****Compatible with TC-14E series teleconverters (AF is only available when used with DSLR cameras that offer f/8 support. These include: D4, D4S, Df, D600, D610, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D7100, D7200). Compatible with TC-17E and TC-20E series teleconverters (AF not possible).you can check nikon website and confirm

Q: 9. Is Nikon 200-500mm lens compatible with new Z7 camera with adapter?

A: Yes all functons will work properly..

Q: 10. Will this lens fully compatible with the Nikon D200 ?

A: The Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E VR lens will not be fully compatible with the D200, no. The lens incorporates an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, as opposed to the traditional mechanical diaphragm. This newer system is not compatible with the D200, so the camera would not be able to control the lenss aperture.

Big, heavy and needs firm support but great lens. Well worth the effort to haul around.

I've owned this lens for about two weeks and am so far delighted with its performance.

I was looking for a long range zoom for shooting birds. It needed to be more portable and hand-holdable than my 500mm f4, have more reach than my 300mm and 1.4x teleconverter, feature VR and variable focal lengths, and offer excellent image quality. I also hoped to be able to use a teleconverter.

I extensively researched the super telephoto 150-600mm zoom offerings from Tamron and Sigma and Nikon's 200-500 f5.6. Each had its strengths and weaknesses, and I found little consensus among reviewers and users, making the choice more difficult. I ultimately took a chance and purchased the Nikon based on the constant f/5.6 and purported excellent VR and sharpness.

I've now shot several thousand images with it on a D500 and D850 and have been delightfully surprised. The VR is amazing, allowing reasonably sharp handheld images down to 1/30 second, even with the TC-14eii attached. Nikon has definitely delivered on its 4-1/2 stops promise. And sharpness is impressive, after fine-tuning the AF with each camera.

IQ with either the TC-14eii or iii is surprisingly good, although focus speed is noticeably decreased as the maximum aperature drops to f/8. In low light/low contrast situations where single point focus can be challenged, group focus will typically work.

In summary, I'm very pleased with this lens.

I've owned long lenses before. I had a 150-500 Sigma a few years ago. Not sharp. I also had an older Nikon 400mm f/4 manual focus. That lens was sharp but the manual focusing was maddening and it was heavy. This lens is sharp, not too heavy, and gives me surprisingly good images with my D500.

I spend much of my time photographing animals in Southeast Alaska...mostly birds. Birds in flight are favored subjects. On the first day out with the new lens mounted on a Nikon D500, I was prepared to use a heavy tripod and cable release. However, brilliant sunlight was available (in limited supply here), so I decided to hand hold. I was surprised...pleased. I have not yet made use of the tripod...one of these days maybe.

I shoot with a Nikon d810 and D7100. After using this lens on both I prefer the way images look coming from the D810, just as I prefer that model for my other lenses as well (Tamron Holy Trinity, Nikon 28-300mm). This lens is a beast to handhold, but it works. I've added a photo to show you how sharp it is. Just starting shooting birds with it, and it's wonderful for that. Very happy with this len.

I just bought this lens for use out west as we tour. Yes, it's heavy and a bit ungainly for a weekender, but it takes amazing pictures (OK, I know it's me who takes the pics).

Visual clarity in the images, and a quiet and fast focusing makes this a sharp lens. I'll need to figure out the vibration from my less than great tripod, but I can fix that with a wireless snapper.

The VR is great, and I did take some hand-held pics which turned out way better than they should have. Am I happy buying this lens? YES, and just a couple of images of animals or landscapes will confirm that it is a great lens for the price.

I have a D7100, so it's like a 600 mm or better lens at the top end, which is a bonus.

I ow the Nikon 200-400 f4 lens which I love but it’s 3 lbs heavier than the 200-500 f5.6 zoom, longer and more cumbersome. For landscape, sports and wildlife photography, this lens is great.

I've had this lens for a free weeks now and I'm very happy with it combined with my D7500. I was concerned it would hunt in our gloomy dark winter days here in the NW but after going out to shoot birds a number of times, including drizzly days, I'm thrilled with it's performance. It took a bit to get the settings right for me but now I'm tracking and getting a fair amount of keepers with birds in flight. When the sun does come out it is amazing fast and sharp.

Only complaint would be size and weight but that is too be expected. It's s bear to handhold all day so i use a monopod much of the time. Definatly a keeper.

Very sharp at f5.6 200mm, I wish Nikon will update its 28-300mm, to make it as sharp as this 200-500mm, good job well done.
