The Vello BG-S3-2 Battery Grip is designed for use with the Sony Alpha a7 II, a7S II, and a7R II mirrorless cameras. The grip holds one or two NP-FW50 batteries which effectively doubles shooting time when both batteries are installed. The design of the grip provides a comfortable way to hold and shoot with the camera in the vertical position.

The BG-S3-2 features a vertical-position shutter-release button, an alternate AF/MF/AEL button, three custom buttons, rear and main control dials, and an on/off switch. It is designed with an anti-slip rubber grip and firm curvature to further improve handling. The grip screws into the camera's tripod mount, and it incorporates a tripod receiver mount on its bottom for attaching to a camera support, quick release plate, or bracket. A metal mount allows you to attach a camera strap or hand grip strap to the BG-S3 for convenient carrying.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this work with the Sony A7sii? If not, which 3rd party battery grip will work?

A: Yes, this grip is compatible with the A7S II.

Q: 2. Dose this work with a6X00? Battery's look the same. Both A7 and A6 use Sony NP-FW50 battery.

A: Cameras like the A6300 do use NP-FW50 batteries, however they have a different design on the bottom than the A7 series of cameras. This battery grip is not recommended with an A6300. Instead we offer B&H #VEBGS4, which is a Vello Battery Grip designed specifically for Sony Alpha a6300.

Q: 3. This is for a7r.?

A: It worked very well on my Sony a7R II.

Q: 4. What are the differences between the Vello BG-S3 Battery Grip & the genuine Sony grip other than the humongous price gap?

A: Technically they do the same thing. Many prefer the cameras manufactures version over a third party brand. That is very subjective.

Q: 5. Has anyone used this with third party batteries?

A: I have the two Sony batteries that come with the A7R II and 6 third party batteries. Haven't noticed any difference using Sony or third party batteries with or without the battery grip! One of the features I like with the battery grip is it tells you which battery is being used and remaining power left on each battery.

Q: 6. Does it work with the alpha a7?

A: i use it with the A7ii

Q: 7. does it have a second mount point for vertical mounting? that would be very useful

A: Unfortunately it does not. However you can always use or get a Ball Head for a Tripod, and that would do the trick.

Q: 8. Do we have a final answer if this is compatible with A7 R II?

A: The short answer to that question is yes. I bought this and installed it in my Sony A7R II and it worked as advertised. Until my camera went haywire one day. I wrote extensively about what happened on my website but I'm not allowed to post a link to it in this response. At this point I can only conclude that the battery grip was responsible for a sudden drainage of all battery power. My camera did not work until I performed a certain sequence of card and battery removal etc. My camera is now working fine, and I have yet to test it once again with the grip installed, although I do plan to.Perhaps someone from B&H Could contact me directly on this. Sony is aware of what happened, as is the local store in which I purchased the camera body itself. If you go to kyleandrew dot com and scroll down, I posted the article on my site this week. I'm not in any way suggesting that the grip was certainly the cause of this issue, but based on correspondence with others online and my own testing, I can't help but highly suspect it.

Q: 9. Recommendation for something similar compatible with the Sony A6500?

A: Vello makes the same type of item for the Sony a6500 camera: Vello BG-S5 Battery Grip for Sony Alpha a6500 (B&H # VEBGS5)

Q: 10. Does this grip have a spot to store the battery compartment cover? Thanks

A: Yes, the battery door is stored on the inside of the vertical portion that inserts into the battery compartment of the camera. There is a special compartment on the battery grip vertical piece that allows you store the cover.

This unit performs fully, as expected. I have been using non-Sony batteries with this unit and they fully communicate with my Sony camera (a7r ii). Construction quality is excellent as well as fit-up to the camera. All the buttons and dials work on the grip to augment the equivalent buttons and dials on the camera body. Highly recommended.

I haven't seen the Sony grip in person but for the price this Vello grip seems great so far. I've had no issues. It's not a perfect match to the A7RII but it's very close, 95% there and decent build quality.

Everything works as it should. The Sony feels better and sturdier, but cost 3 times more. If don't have an additional $300 bucks to spend in the original one, go with this one, you won't regret it.

Does what its suppose to do for a faction of the cost of the Sony. I have a Meike for my Sony A6000 but I like the Vello coverage in the B&H catalog.

I use this grip with a Sony A7SII camera. The primary reason is for using this grip is to double battery capacity attached to the camera. The grip is very light without the batteries and using it adds ergonomics of holding camera especially with a larger lens. The only negative is awkwardness of inserting battery in one of two bays but it something one can get used to.
