Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What makes it worth a whopping $5K?

A: it renders and incredibly sharp but velvet-y image. drawback (besides the price) this lens is very heavy.

Q: 2. Can I Use this lens with Sony A7models with an special adapter ?

A: The best adapter is this one to use the ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF on a A7 series camera, https://bhpho.to/46wH423. Note the mfr does not list that lens specific but should be find.

Q: 3. Is the depth of field scale on the lens accurate? If for any F Stop, one end of the scale is on Infinity, will the other end of the scale accurately reflect the near focus point? I like the Batis lenses for this reason.

A: Hi John, Absolutely! The people at Zeiss did a through program in developing this beautiful piece of seeing glass and it's secretly artificial glass. The depth of field is right on the money, I have now spent countless hours shooting landscapes and I couldn't be happier. It will problem be one of your best investments. Rad

Q: 4. Is there a lens hood that matches the silver color lens?

A: No, the lens hood made for the ZEISS Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 ZM Lens (Silver) is in black, https://bhpho.to/3Gzndn4 .

Q: 5. Can I use it with my Leica M3?

A: The ZEISS ZM lens family is compatible with any M-mount camera.

Q: 6. How does this lens match with the Leica-M240 body with a the EVF2? Can the EVF2 see the full frame effect of the 15mm lens?

A: One of the advantages of the EVF2 is when using wide angle or telephoto lenses, you see the field of view of the lens mounted on the camera. For use with the 15mm f/2.8 ZM lens, the EVF2 will be ideal.

Q: 7. Does the lens come with the filter ? It is not stated in the included items

A: Yes, the ZEISS Distagon T* 2.8/15 ZM lens ships with the center weighted filter included.

Q: 8. why does this lens need a Center Filter?

A: The center filter is meant to average the light distribution from the center of the lens to the frame edges to minimize vignetting - especially in areas of even density, such as blue sky, seamless backgrounds etc. The use of the center filter was more important in the pre-digital days, when post correction was more difficult.

Q: 9. This focal length is very prone to sagittal coma flare. Does the Otus 28mm resist this? Especially with off axis bright lights?

A: At worst, the flares will look artistic and beautiful ... everything is beautiful through that lens (not kidding !). But yes, stopping the lens down even to 1.8 will likely eliminate it.

Q: 10. Can you let me know which way around the focus rotates on the Otus? Same as the regular Nikon lenses or the same way as the Canon version. Thanks

A: The Nikon F version rotates the same way as Nikon lenses (i.e. the scale reads from infinity on the left to MFD on the right) and the Canon EF version rotates the same way as Canon lenses (i.e. the scale reads from MFD on the left to infinity on the right).

This is a superb work of art lens that has remarkable quality written all over it. The pictures are sharp and the resolution is as well. The color rendition is very accurate. There is slight distortion but easily corrected. There is a bit of chromatic aberration but also easily corrected. This lens performs as well as one can expect. It is probably best at ASA 64 and raw. It requires attention to detail to get its maximum yield. I am sure that a pro that has a particular use for this lens will be delighted with the results, but it is a LOT of lens for the skilled amateur and the hefty price makes you have to think about its role in your photography. I have owned it twice and just could not justify it despite it being the finest lens I owned. I own the Otus 55, the Otus 85 and the Milvus 135 all of which are sensational. The Otus 28 slightly lacks the snap of the others, but with after processing can yield some smashing photos. If I had unlimited resources, I would own it for the occasional app I could find for a lens of this caliber.

I have owned many cameras and lenses over 50+ years and use Leica and Phase One now but this lens on my SONY A7Riv produces incredible sharpness and resolution and Panos that competes with my medium format. Build quality second to none by any lens in the world.
You can use wide-open with minimal distortions. I have all 4 OTUS lenses all equally excellent.

This is a beautiful lens. I also have the Milvus 25mm f/1.4 ZE. The 25mm is lighter, and probably a little sharper on the edge, but the Otus 28mm delivers much more inspiring color, like the Otus 50mm f/1.4.

It feels harder to focus than the 25mm, probably due to its weight and size.

I own the Zeiss 21, Zeiss milvus 25,35f1.4,85,135. Rented the Otus 28. My 21 has made some Sharp, contrast remarkable images images with my 5d Mkii, and mkiii. Shot it side by side w otus 28 at Palo Duro Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park. Completely blew the 21 away on sharpness and especially contrast and depth of color at distance. Now have 5d milvus. The 25 blows away the 21 and sharpness near Otus. Both very even sharpness to corners at f8. Contrast not directly compared.Otus has a more adjustment to focus. The milvus has extremely small movement to be OOF. Otus more resistance like 21 vs milvus with less resistance. I greatly prefer the resistance of Otus and classic. Weatherproofing very important, my 21 has water damage!!! I prefer the old classic style vs Itus and Milvus. Otus at f1.4 is gorgeous. I think if I had to do it over I would go with the Otus for quality, but most of my scenes need 24-25.

Made the plunge with this lens and I have no regrets. It's mind-boggling what it can do, from macro style shots to portraits to landscapes and astro-photography. Combine this lens with a Canon and you have a fine piece of heavy photographic weaponry on your hands.I like the fact that it's heavy, but it actually makes my 5D Mark IV look tiny, so I think it will be better to pair this with a 1DX II eventually. A couple of shots below, one out of the box and another up in the Himalayas, shot at F2.5, 4000ISO, 15 seconds. Still learning how to use this thing, but off to a good start and I'm seeing many years of enjoyment yet to come with this lens. Unfortunately I can't upload these photos because BH site keeps timing out on me, but

I purchased this lens with the idea of minimizing post production work on my photographs. I spent hours of research and found that the expert consensus was that the Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZF.2 lens is possibly one of the finest to date. Since I have purchased it, I have used it on my Nikon D 850 extensively. My experience has been that It does require attention to detail in shooting, but it has never ceased to amaze me in its sharpness and color rendering. This is my second purchase of a new Zeiss lens. I'm extremely pleased with this lens.

I got my first Zeiss, the Mulvis 15/2.8 last week. I was extremely impressed with that lens. Although manual focus, it has since kept the Sigma 12-24 and Nikon 16-35 in the bag. And I sent an Irix 15/2.4 Blackstone (a very nice lens actually) back. That initial experience gave me the confidence to order the Otus 28/1.4 and 55/1.4. I have not had full manual lenses since my Canon and Nikon film SLRS and my Mamiya and Rollei MF cameras. TBH, I wasn't sure if my decades-older eyes would be up to the task. Well, I am still not sure about that part, but this lens and the 810A are superb together. P, A, and S modes work flawlessly. I took it out today for a few dozen shots during early afternoon. Light was bright and a bit flat, uninteresting to say the least. But this lens is just extraordinary. Color richness and fidelity, the almost-3D effect of DOF, corner-to-corner sharpness, lack of distortion, resolution, all amazing. I have Sigma 35/1.4 and 24/1.4 Art lenses that I picked up primarily for astrophotography. This lens takes their place, as well as the Nikon 24-70/2.8, and every other lens that covers this range. Yes, it's big and heavy; this is not a kit for speed pack ascents. But I will haul these lenses around the world in the next couple of months, because once you have seen what they deliver, there is no going back.

This will become my go-to landscape lens. It is wide enough for most situations, and can always go portrait and shoot stitched panos. Sharpest lens I have used and has a great color/contrast quality like my Leica lenses. It is a monster however, in size and weight. Glad I recently purchased a truck to drive in to the mountains. This lens is not for backpackers.
