Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does the Milvus version of this 21mm lens compare to the older Distagon version?

A: The Milvus 2.8/21 shares the same optical design as the 'Classic' Distagon T* 2.8/21 ZF.2, but is superior in a number of other ways. The anti-reflective coating is improved, which provides better control of flare and subsequently improves contrast and color saturation. The barrel is now weather sealed against moisture and dust, while the aperture on the ZF.2 series can be de-clicked for continuous control of the aperture.

Q: 2. I see aperture ring and numbers in the product image. If this was used on D7200, does the camera recognize the aperture selected on the ring? And how do the 1/3 aperture stops work?

A: The aperture selection on the ZEISS Milvus ZF.2 lenses can be done using the ring on the lens barrel, or via the sub-command dial on the camera. This choice needs to be made in the set-up menu on the camera (refer to the D7200 user manual for more information). When the aperture ring on the lens is chosen, the aperture is changed in 1/2 stop increments. When the aperture is controlled via the camera using the sub-command dial, then the aperture can be controlled in 1/3 stop increments. When using this method, the aperture on the lens should be set to the lowest level until it clicks into place. Otherwise you will see EE readings in the camera menu.

Q: 3. What is the effective focal length of this lens on an APS--C camera?

A: The equivalent length would be close to 31mm.

Q: 4. will this work on an older f series camera like an f3?

A: Yes this lens can work on a Nikon SLR body like an F3.

Q: 5. Can this lens be used on a Nikon Z7 with the Techart adapter?

A: While it could work being completely manually controlled there are probably better options available to you.

Q: 6. Can this lens be used on a Nikon Z7II with the FTZ Adapter?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is compatible with the Z7 II when used with the FTZ adapter.

Q: 7. Does this lens have focus breathing?

A: Yes, definitely noticeable in my copy when comparing closest focus to infinity. No doubt there are scenarios where this phenomenon matters but as an amateur enthusiast Ive never encountered any problems because of it. Definitely a fabulous lens.

Q: 8. Is this lens made in Germany? Or Japan?

A: The following lens is made in japan.

Q: 9. How many blades does the diaphram have? Are they rounded?

A: The lens has 9-blade circular aperture.

Q: 10. Can anyone recommend a well-fitting lens case or cover?

A: I'm using a smal neoprene micro lens pouch bought on Amazon. It's brown, made of neoprene with a drawstring to close it and thus nicely protects the lens. Comes in three sizes, the smallest one (tight) and the medium (with extra room) work well for the Loxia 21. Unfortunately, but understandably I cannot paste the link here...p

I rented this lens and the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II to see if the Zeiss was worth the extra cash and whether I could deal with the manual focus on my 5D Mk III. I know there are manufacturing variations from one sample to another, so it's hard to say whether my experience will be the same as your's. In my tests (same scene, same lighting, shot from a tripod, manual exposure and manual focus) the Zeiss beat the Canon every time in terms of sharpness. The upper right corner of the images taken with the Zeiss were not as sharp as the other corners, but still better than the Canon in every respect. The Canon image sharpness was the same as the Zeiss in the center of the image. The color of the Zeiss images appeared more natural as well, although this difference to the Canon lens was only slight. Finally, chromatic aberrations (CA) in the Zeiss were practically non-existent, while they were prevalent in the Canon. That said, it was easy to eliminate the CA using Lightroom, so in the end, CA wasn't really a factor. Despite the amazing performance of this lens, I would seriously miss the Auto Focus (AF) capability of the Canon. Having to always use Live View, zoom in to x10 magnification, and manually focus every time would wear me out (and seriously frustrate my wife) during our travels. If I was never pressed for time, and was always using a tripod, I would buy the Zeiss in a heartbeat. But for my landscape photography where I like to cover more ground to see more sights, I would go for the Canon lens and its AF capability, fix the chromatic aberrations with software, and just live with the softer corners.

This is not so much a review of the Loxia 21mm because I only have it for 5 days and because of physical problems I am not able to go out shooting at the moment.
But I can tell from the pictures I took inside the house that this lens looks very promising.
And the feel of this lens is real Zeiss with the all metal build and buttery smooth manuel focussing.
And infinity is there just before the hard stop.

This feel is quite different from the Zeiss Batis 18mm I do own.
Which is a lovely lens to, but not that traditional Zeiss feeling.

The real reason for writing this interview is that I keep reading that this 21mm lens (and also the other Loxias) is hard to install and to remove because there is hardly place to get good grip on the lens.

I do like to mention that there is a small company in Germany who did solve this problem with the Pocket pano lensgrip, they are specially made for the Loxia lenses and do not cost a fortune.
As I can see they do ship worldwide.
So if you like to solve the problem google Pocket pano lensgrip and you will find pocketpano.de
Their site is in english too, maybe you have to choose first between english and german.

I did order 2 of them, one for the 21mm and one for a future Loxia 50mm.
And when it is attached to the lens you hardly see the difference, it becomes one with the lens.
And it works flawlesley, i now have very good grip on the lens.

So I do hope I can help some people solving this problem.
And it would be a pitty if this lens looses stars in the reviews because of this now easy to solve problem.

Best regards,
Joep

This lens is just a replacement for my damaged one, love buying the original manufacture option. The felt interior is beautiful!

Just a first sight review as the weather has been so bad and work gets in the way that I haven’t been able to get out with this sweet beast of a lens.

BIG SHOUT OUT TO B&H You ROCK!! Their shipping is on point... I’ve ordered many times here and never a glitch. Your checkout online is the best I’ve used. Don’t change anything in this app.

The Zeiss Milvus 21mm is a beautiful lens. It is in the Milvus style so it looks the same as other Milvus lenses except BIGGER. The focus ring is butter smooth.
Swiss Advant-Garde

FILTERS APPLICATION... I have a NiSi S5 System and just received a adapter ring ... it won’t work with the NiSi Wide Angle adapter and I need to explore other options ... NISI V5 100mm being one option. More later.
Again... B&H ... job well done and I hope to be able to stop into the main store one day soon.

I really like this lens. My photography is better with this lens because it makes me pick exactly what I want in focus. No more handing over the focus point to autofocus. It works well on both my A7R2 and my 6300. You also get the EXIF data from this lens. I do have to use the EVF to focus so you want to have a tripod tall enough so you don't have to hunch down.

Very sharp lens. My first prime for landscape. I just noticed that It’s a struggle to unmount it in my camera, that I need to turn it along with the dials all the way. But, nevertheless, this is worth buying.

Among other things, designing a lens is an exercise in balancing factors that are often in conflict. For instance high speed versus available depth of field. Another is build quality versus low cost. My photographic interest is landscape. For me, not having f/1.4 means little compared to having high quality depth of field at small aperture sizes. Having smooth, easily controlled manual focus leads to more creative control as does an easily readable depth of field scale on the lens. Finally, build quality means lenses I use constantly will have a very long life requiring no additional investments in replacements. I still regularly use a Linhof with a Zeiss lens my father bought in the 1940's.

What an excellent lens. Its more useful to me than my 15mm Zeiss and is getting nearly as much use as my Milvus 50mm.

Combined with viewfinder 21, this is the perfect companion for my Leica M9-P. Its crystal sharp from edge to edge, and with the f/2.8, it handles semi-dark conditions extremely well.
