This 4-stop, 4 x 5.65" NiSi Cinema Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND Filter is a rectangular filter that helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. This horizontally oriented filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. It provides up to a 4-stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors, and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light when compared to traditional film, NiSi's Optical Nano Coating has been applied to each of this filter's surfaces to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

4 x 5.65" graduated neutral density filter darkens bright areas of an image, such as skies, while leaving the remainder of the frame unaffected.

16x filter factor provides up to a 4-stop reduction of light in selective areas.

Soft-edged line of horizontally oriented transition between the dense and clear areas.

Each surface includes NiSi Optical Nano Coating that attenuates infrared light as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure times.

Scratch-, oil-, and water-resistant nano-coating creates a protective layer over the glass, making it ideal for use in harsh environments and easy to clean.

Constructed from optical glass for clarity.

Compatible with NiSi Cinema C4 Filter Holder Kit

Leatherette pouch included for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the 43mm filter have 43mm filter threads int he front of it? Or like the 82,, does it have larger 86mm filter threads in?

A: The NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (43mm) has 43mm rear filter threads and 46mm front threads.

Q: 2. Can the hard stop be removable?

A: According to the manufacturer, the hard stops on the NiSi 82mm True Color ND-Vario Pro Nano 1-5 Stops Variable ND Filter cannot be removed. If the variable neutral density filter had no hard stops, cross-type X-banding patterns would occur in your images.

Q: 3. when the 6-9 ND comes out, can it be COMBINED with the 1-5 (=14)? with threads or friction: will i need 86mm to put with 82 1-5?

A: No, you can not combine the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (82mm) with another variable nd filter.

Q: 4. What is the thread size of the rotating lever?

A: The NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (82mm) rear threads are 82mm, and the front threads, where the rotating lever is, are 86mm.

Q: 5. What is the front filter thread MM diameter?

A: The NiSi 95mm True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter has a front 95mm size thread.

Q: 6. Does this come with gasket already attached?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. How does this "Explorer" differ from the "Nano"?

A: The explorer is also Nano but NiSi Explorer filters are constructed from tempered Schott B270 glass for shock resistance as well as increased optical clarity and color fidelity.

Q: 8. Does the filter have a threaded front element to allow for additional filter be threaded on the front?

A: The NiSi 82mm True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter has 86mm front threads. The 86mm front filter thread is larger than the rear thread to reduce the chance of vignetting on wide-angle lenses. It is recommended that this filter is used on 35mm or longer focal lengths lenses.

Q: 9. Since this filter uses polarizing material, I wonder if it can be used as a polarizer?

A: No,NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (58mm) does not have polarizing effects. This filter will only add 1-5 stops darker to your exposure. A great filter. Well made and no color shift. I love the fact that there are hard stops at each end as opposed to endless spin. Also very nice that it comes with its own lens cap.

I own 4 of these variable ND’s of different diameters that I use for video. I find them to be effective without any unexpected coloration or image impairment.

Comes with a really nice carrying case and its super smooth to change from 1-5 stops.

This is my first variable ND and it immediately proved its worth. Filming outdoors, it's easy to quickly stop down the ND before adjusting exposure in the lens. Affords more flexibility and helps preserve shallow depth of field. Indoors, I use it to expose for practical background lamps or windows so they don't blow out, then light the subject and adjust lens aperture to maintain shallow DOF. Haven't experienced the dreaded X yet. Haven't found the tiny screw-on lever to be necessary yet. Lens cover is just the right amount of snug, and the case must account for a decent fraction of the filter's cost, it's really nice.

I used cheaper VNDs before at around $30 - $40 a piece but was never happy with the results. They are usually not sharp, have a lot of color cast, big vignette, and overall not a good quality. I then switched to fixed NDs, higher quality at around $70 a piece. Those are the best, but not much felixibility. I finally bought the NiSi True Color and love it. The first VND that's really good. Almost as good as the fixed NDs but with a lot more flexibility when it comes to filming weddings.
