The speaker cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all tuned together for the HD6. This, in turn, helps make for a more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. Audioengine builds all this into the left speaker cabinet to make it easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, display, network player, or any other audio product.

Audioengine has taken features from the B1 aptX HD Bluetooth Receiver and the D1 24-bit DAC, and combined some of this circuitry inside the HD6.

The Bluetooth built into the HD6 powered speakers features aptX HD coding, which is a Bluetooth audio codec designed to help provide enhanced sound quality. And even if your phone or tablet doesn't have aptX HD, the HD6 Bluetooth solution is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC codecs, so you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and still enjoy all your music.

The HD6 offers a Bluetooth solution that has up to a 100' range for multi-room use, with virtually no degradation in audio quality.

The HD6 Bluetooth receiver and optical input both utilize the AKM AK4396A DAC, which is designed to provide low noise and high fidelity. The optical input configures the DAC as a bit-perfect 24-bit DAC, which will process sample rates up to 192 kHz natively. For Bluetooth, the AK4396A is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bits, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the AK4396A, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits, and the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the HD6 Bluetooth implementation is engineered to present impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics.

The amplifiers in the HD6 are located in the left speaker and feature class A/B analog monoblock design. This is designed to provide high-quality audio and greater flexibility, and all the circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for augmented mechanical shock protection.

Audioengine uses ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters are engineered to hold up well under high power, and the edge-driven design helps provide a smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. The strength of Kevlar means the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The HD6 woofers are housed in cast aluminum frames, which help provide high rigidity and increased heat dispersion.

Audioengine uses gapless-core toroidal transformers, which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard "EI" transformers, and also generate less heat.

The HD6 includes detachable grilles that are held in place with hidden neodymium magnets for a clean look.

  • Dual audio inputs and full-range variable output
  • Optical, RCA, and 1/8" inputs allow for easy connection to a variety of sources, including a turntable or TV
  • Threaded inserts to secure speakers to stands
  • Passive crossovers
  • Aluminum remote control

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do they support Bluetooth?

A: The Audioengine A5+ does not support bluetooth. If you want to use them with bluetooth connectivity, then you will need a bluetooth receiver to connect to them like B&H # AUB1

Q: 2. Can these be used as computer speakers? I like a lot of bass, and currently using klipsch pro media 2.1 speakers.

A: I believe A5+ can be computer speakers because they are active speakers comes with amplifier embedded. However, they are too big if you put them next to my 27 monitor. Imagine it will looked so out of proportion with smaller monitor. I suggest you use A2+ and add a subwoofer to give better bass than A5+ can provide. A2+ will be less costly. Money saved can pay a portion of a sub. I currently use A5+ on speaker stands with a 4K TV, which put out terrible sound quality. I am an audiophile and I cannot recommend A5+ or A2+ as hifi speakers for music listening. They are just OK speakers and cost effective.

Q: 3. What’s the power connection 220 or 110

A: The Audioengine A2+ Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System power input is 100 to 240 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz.

Q: 4. Can the Audioengine B2 be combined with other Audioengine speakers or other Bluetooth speakers to create a party type system?

A: No. This speaker cannot be connected in a party-chain fashion to other bluetooth speakers.

Q: 5. Can I play music off my iPhone?

A: Yes - you can plug them in directly through the headphone jack on your phone, or purchase a Bluetooth receiver.

Q: 6. Does this system have an optical input ? - I intend to use this with my 32 " samsung TV-(which is being used as a computer . monitor). Sadly, the TV has no RCA , or headphone output, only optical one)

A: Unfortunately this model doesn't have optical connections.

Q: 7. I was wondering how you switch sources on these speakers. Or as suggested in the reviews, can you really leave multiple sources plugged in and the speakers just automatically play whatever they're receiving a signal from?

A: No switches necessary. Whatever connected device is playing will be played by the speakers.

Q: 8. How do this compare to 2 JBL xtreme paired together?

A: The Audioengine HD6 pair will blow away the JBL pair! The JBL Extreme's particular charms are that it is a portable bluetooth system, splash-proof, rugged and battery operated. Oh, and a pair of them would sound great but I recommend them on their own merits and not as a competitor for your affections withe the HD6.

Q: 9. Will this speaker connect to my turntable in anyway besides Bluetooth?

A: If your turntable has a built in preamp and it outputs RCA, you can use B&H # KOSMYCM2RM03 to connect it directly to the Audioengine B2 speaker.

Q: 10. Can it play multiple audio streams via different devices, simultaneously through Bluetooth?

A: The Audioengine HD6 Bluetooth Speaker System (Walnut, Pair) BH #AUHD6WAL is capable of streaming just one signal at a time.

I'm using these with our flat screen and iPhone iTunes with BlueTooth. I bought the set based on customer reviews. I never heard of AudioEngine. I had no idea they existed. The reviews are so positive I looked at these first and stopped looking. The self contained power amp and bluetooth were a strong selling point. I just ordered IsoAcostic Aperta stands for the HD6's

These are absolutely amazing speakers, by far the best I've ever heard in this price range. The Bluetooth codec they created will astound you, because they simply don't sound like wireless speakers. They come beautifully packaged and protected, and are easy to install. Now I have speakers in a place that couldn't be wired!

After owning a pair of Audioengine A2 speakers for 8 years, I decided to buy a larger pair of speakers for my home Hifi. As a professional audio engineer, I'm quite picky, but from the moment I unwrapped and connected these speakers, I was delighted by their sound, looks and functionality. My HD6 speakers are connected to my NAD pre-amp, running audio from my Technics turntable, Pono player, Television, or DVD player. I also played hi-res audio via bluetooth from my Tidal app off my iPhone. Lastly, I tested running digital audio from my laptop into the optical input on the HD6 speakers. In all of these applications, the speakers worked flawlessly. Furthermore, I was happy to discover that it accepts audio from all of these sources simultaneously - so I could seamlessly play music from one medium to another without having to disconnect/reconnect cabling.
