The Tiffen 72mm Warm Pro-Mist 4 Filter helps to reduce the value of the highlights while noticeably lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 4 density provides a very noticeable amount of contrast and highlight reduction and allows for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

This filter also combines the diffusion effect with an 812 warming filter for providing a general warmth to the image and for improving skin tones. This warming effect also helps to reduce blue sensitivity and for cutting through overly cool tones within the scene.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. With all VND filters, can they be used with a standard UV lens protector or does it have to be removed before attaching the VND? Would rather be any problems/colour shift etc, using both?

A: You can use a VND screwed onto a UV filter, however... you may experience vignetting when shooting at wider angles as you are stacking filters (vignetting is when the camera sensor sees the filter rings, this causes dark corners). Also, a VND filter is highly recommended for still photography to aperture/control your depth of field when shooting in bright light and to control your shutter speed for long exposures during daylight. For video it's a great tool to control depth of field.

Q: 2. will this fit lens Sony 28-75mm f/2.8?

A: This filter will fit on any lens designed with 67mm filter threads, please check the specifications for your particular lens to determine the filter thread size.

Q: 3. Is this compatible with an e-mount Sigma 50mm? I can seem to get it to thread onto my lens.

A: Yes, it is compatible.

Q: 4. Can these filters be stacked on b+W uv filters. Planning on using them for 58,72, and 77mm lenses I have with the uvs On.

A: I only stack this with an adapter to accommodate the smaller lenses. When I was looking at this filter, I chose the one for my largest lens and then bought adapters to use it on the smaller lens. This is the last filter I use in a stack and have used it stacked on my uv filter in 77mm.

Q: 5. Will 52 mm work for 50mm prime lens?

A: If your lens has a 52mm filter thread, then it will work.

Q: 6. Has anybody tried this filter on an Panasonic FZ300, or for that matter FZ200?

A: Coenraad, thanks for your interest in the Tiffen VND filter. The X Bar effect you mentioned is a product of optical physics and happens with all VND filters when operated outside their intended parameters. VND filters consist of two polarizing filters, as you twist one polarizer in relation to another you create the VND effect. The X Bar typically happens when you are shooting the filter at darker densities and you are using a wide focal length, this will be more common on full frame sensor cameras instead of cropped sensor cameras. To eliminate the X Bar effect you should reduce the density setting of the VND, change your focal length by zooming on more or a combination of both until the effect disappears.

Q: 7. Can/Should this be used in conjunction with a UV filter?

A: We recommend always having a Tiffen UV filter on your lens. The Tiffen VND can attach to the outside filter threads on the UV filter, however when shooting at wide angle you may experience vignetting. If so, you will have to remove the UV filter and just shoot with the VND.

Q: 8. Can this be used with the Tamron 50-400 with hood attached?

A: No, you cannot use the Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter with the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E while the lens hood is attached.

Q: 9. Will this fit a Nikon 80-400 VR AF lens?

A: yes, check lens specs, Filter Thread, Front: 77 mm

Q: 10. Can this filter be used with a lens hood?

A: I have the filter for my Canon 70-200 and NO, the lens hood cannot physically fit over the filter.
