The Hoya 82mm HD3 UV Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.7% light transmission, 16 layers of anti-reflection nano coatings are applied to each side. This total of 32 coatings offers a high degree of protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The nano coating formula associated with HD3 UV filters results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency and is also effective with regard to oil and stains.

Constructed from chemically-hardened optical glass, the Hoya 82mm HD3 UV Filter offers enhanced resistance to scratches while providing clarity and color fidelity. It also features a thin, lightweight, aluminum-alloy filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting.

This UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the front edge of this filter threaded for stacking another filter in front of this one, like a polarizer?

A: Yes. I just screwed one of my other filters to the front of it to verify.

Q: 2. Are the rings brass or aluminum? Are there front threads?

A: The rings are aluminum. Brass rings have a tendency to transfer any impact shock directly to the lens, while aluminum rings ill absorb most of the impact.

Q: 3. Reviews say this filter is a lint/dust magnet. How best to clean it?

A: The Sensei DOC-CK Deluxe Optics Care and Cleaning Kit, BH # SEDOCCK would offer the best options for cleaning this Hoya filter or any of your lenses. https://bhpho.to/3UzaJ4p

Q: 4. Does this exhibit any tinting at wide angles? (I have a Heliopan UV/IR cut filter which (as advertised) starts to tint green at wider angles (at 24mm & wider).)

A: Unfortunately it does at wide open, almost always, however even zooming in slightly removes the vignetting, I have two of them, I only use it on the Canon 70-200 it is not suitable on my 24-70, the real problem is the vignetting doesn't show up in the viewfinder or live view

Q: 5. Does this particular filter downgrade image sharpness in any way vs. not using a filter at all?

A: Technically, any glass layer in a lens system scatters light and decreases sharpness. However, the reality is good filters will not affect sharpness to any degree you can see. Frankly, other factors such as camera shake, focus, subject movement, aperture, lighting and contrast have far greater influence on image sharpness than a quality filter such as this one.

Q: 6. Can this filter be used with 300mm f/2.8l usm11 lens?

A: To use this filter with the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L USM II, you would need the Canon - Drop-In Filter Holder for 52mm Screw-In Filters, BH # CAFHS52 https://bhpho.to/32xuTCE

Q: 7. How thick is the frame?

A: The HD3 Cir/Pol filter is 5mm thick.

Q: 8. Is this a better polarizing filter than the B+W 77mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter at half the price?

A: What you are paying for is quality. Hoya is one of the best companies making filters. With this one you getting all the best features Hoya can produce. The quality of the ring, the glass, the foils that make up the Polarizer, the works. The B+W, on the other hand is the finest they make in this size. Honestly, without comparing side by side, it is hard to make a determination. I suspect both will have outstanding performance and build quality and the in the long run, you will not lose with either.

Q: 9. what is the warranty for the 52 and 58mm HD3 UV, HD3 CPL and variable ND filters?

A: Hoya filters carry a limited lifetime warranty.

Q: 10. How thin is this Hoya HD3 49mm UV filter?

A: This filter has a frame thickness of 5mm.

I never use any filter for regular sessions, only if there is a risk of lens damage from sand or rain or very windy days where debris may fly into the camera. It worked great and didn't affect the picture quality that much.

I am a subscriber to the notion that having a uv filter on the front of the lens is a protective move. I know some feel this degrades the image quality but I feel that saving the front element of the lens from an accidental bump or touch is worth more than a tiny bit of sharpness. I've been using Hoya filters for years and the HD3 series are great. I highly recommend it.

Bought this to go on the new lens I just brought.

Ken Rockwell says to always buy this filter type, so I did. The quality and fingerprint resistance and ability to clean it set it apart from others. The multicoating beats any of the Nikkor filters I've ever used.

I purchased the sony 24-70 gm ii and wanted a filter to fit the large 82mm diameter. This is top-of-the-line and protects the lens great.

These are worth the money if you're protecting a top-of-the-line lens.

It is worth the extra cost for such a durable filter. I have a a number of these of different lenses and this is my go to product as other filters need replacing.

I use this 49mm on my little Fujifilm X70 (with a ring adapter to account for the lens movement when shooting close up) and never use a lens cap. These Hoyas have a good reputation and it seems to live up to its billing. Although honestly I'm not sure how much better it is than others in its class or even less expensive options. But I do like it quite a bit. It's my see through lens cap ; )
