A: This lens will work fine with the Nikon D7100. Concern about f/stops comes into play only if the maximum aperture is too small for whatever camera is being used to focus with. A: Given the much greater 600mm telephoto reach, if your current longest lens is a 300mm then this would be a worthy addition. To get an idea of what that would be like, at 600mm you're seeing 25 percent of the frame you see when you're at 300mm. That's four times as "close." Having said that, especially since you're shooting with such a high resolution camera, you'll want to use a tripod or monopod so that camera shake doesn't rob you of any of the detail that your sensor can capture.
