Tiffen 82mm Ultra Contrast 1/2 Filter

Tiffen 82mm Ultra Contrast 1/2 Filter
  • Product Code: ga3106
  • Availability: In Stock

$449.97 $674.96

The Tiffen 82mm Ultra Contrast 1/2 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce contrast while photographing an image or while recording video. By distributing ambient illumination to darker areas within a scene, this filter is useful in helping to uniformly balance the tonal range among highlights and shadows. Detail is increased within shadow regions while flare and halation around highlights is purposely limited.

This filter has a grade of 1/2. Grades of 1/8, 1/4, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this fit onto the jvc gy-hm170u?

A: The filter diameter of this lens is 62mm as specified on the B&H page for this item, so yes... it should fit.https://a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194106-REG/jvc_gy_hm170ua_4kcam_compact_professional.html target= _blank www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194106-REG/jvc_gy_hm170ua_4kcam_compact_professional.html/a

Q: 2. Do this product rotate?

A: Yes, you must rotate the filter to adjust the density of the filter for your image.

Q: 3. Is it possible to do 0 stops when attached? Or is the minimum 2 stops?

A: The least amount of ND is 2 stops. There is no zero ND.

Q: 4. Looking to put this on my voigtlander 17.5mm so I can shoot video at f/2.0 in daylight. With a 3stop ND filter I own, I have to shoot at f/8 to shoot at 1/50 shutter for video. If my math is correct, I would need at least 7 stop filter for f/2.0. When does the infamous cross pattern show up on this filter?

A: Thanks for your interest in the Tiffen VND filter. The X Bar is dependent upon three factors.... the sensor size of your camera, your focal length and your VND setting. There is no way to say when exactly it will happen. The X Bar typically happens when shooting wide angle and when using higher density settings on the VND. This will happen sooner with a full frame sensor. To eliminate the X Bar you would simply adjust your focal length (zoom in), go to a lighter density setting on the VND or a combination of both. The X Bar effect is a product of optical physics and does not indicate that anything is wrong with the VND filter. If it appears you are simply operating outside of the recommended VND parameters.

Q: 5. Will this cause a vignette on the Sony 24-105mm at the wise end?

A: No, it should not vignette on the 24mm end.

Q: 6. Can I still get lens flares?

A: There is no filter that eliminates flares. In fact, sometimes a filter increases the chance of flares. It depends on the lens and the light that is in and out of frame. Therefore to answer your question, it depends. What you need to do is to put it on and off the lens while checking for flares. As a motion picture camera assistant I had to check for flare on the lens, with or without filter, during the set up of the entire move (if there was one) of every shot. Wish I had a buck for each time I had to do that. I could buy two Leicas, with a nice set of lenses.

Q: 7. I want to get a bigger filter size so I can just step it down to any desired lens size. I just want to know if it will cause any vignette or distortion when stepping down?

A: When stepping down it will not.

Q: 8. I'd like to add this filter to the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. Is the 58mm filter the right size? Also is there a way to use a lens hood with the filter in place and if so what type?

A: The filter is the right size. The lens hood for the 18-55 is called the ew-63c made by Canon. There is a possibility that they could work together but i wouldn't bet on it. The hood would have to be applied before attaching the filter, and even if the filter could fit on with the lens hood attached it would be near impossible to tighten it on the filter ring. But the good news is that isn't really a problem. With modern coating on lenses, lens hoods, which prevent lens flare is practically not an issue unless you are shooting right in to the sun or bright light source. A lens hood wouldn't be able to prevent lens flare anyways when shooting into a bright light source. Basically, a lens hood will not have a large practical purpose so there's no reason to shoot with one on while using the neutral density filter.

Q: 9. Does anyone know if my Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 VR lens hood works with this filter attached?

A: I assume you mean the 77mm version of the variable ND... because this is the 82 mm which of course will not fit ... guess you can use a stepup ring? But it will work for sure if it fits you lens... pretty sure there is a 77mm version. The variable ND is ideal for shooting video where you are maintaining a shutter speed and F stop or T stop with a specific depth of field and you need to drop the amount of light coming in plus you cannot drop the ISO any further. That's what I use it for anyways.

Q: 10. i dont know anything about NDs, so how does this compare to Genustech Eclipse ND Fader Filter

A: This is a variable ND which gives you 2 to 8 stops of light control. It won the Variable ND Shootout, see the review at the link below. It comes with an outstanding 10 year warranty and is Made in the USA.a href= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nECdBiu5Rrw target= _blank https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nECdBiu5Rrw/a

When trying to get shallow depth of field in bright sunlight, these filters do the trick.

Finally able to get that 'flowing' water in waterfalls, oceans and so glad I did. Vignetting when stacked at 16-20mm crop sensor-that is to be expected. No problems with threads as I have had with B&W high end circular polarizer. Construction seems solid of course adding filters is going to effect image quality though seems to be a minimum.

Great set of filters, provides a nice variety of densities, as well as the obvious ability to stack them to darken your exposures even more. The pouch they come with also has one empty spot, which is nice if you plan to expand the set (which I did).

Quality filters in the most commonly used densities. Great when you don't need the speed of Vari ND, because to my eye there is no discernible compromise on image quality. Very reasonable price too.

I am taking a photo class on the Big Island of Hawaii and was told we would need the filters for the various scenes. This kit worked perfect for my needs.
