Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. I want to convert several analog videos to a digital format using the Elgato Systems USB Video Converter (or similar converter). If I use the KanexPro in conjunction with the Elgato Converter, will it improve the final image quality?
A: Sorry, but these cannot be used together. The Elgato creates a file, not video signal. The KanexPro needs a video signal in order to work. Generally speaking, you cannot up rez video to significantly improve the image quality. Usually, all you can hope for is making the original as good as it can.
Q: 2. Does it do scanline doubling? My input to the device would be 240p s-video that needs scanline doubling to produce the full image when output at higher resolution.
A: This product does offers an S-Video Input and will allow that signal to be up-scaled for viewing on a 4K TV through HDMI.
Q: 3. I have a Pioneer Elite Laserdisc player. DVL-91. Purchased new Sony Smart TV. Only has HDMI and component. All I want to do is dust off my LD player and watch our LD movie collection. Will this work? Aspect ratio be messed with? Please help!
A: I have a Pioneer DVL-700; I have to control the aspect ratio from the display with this converter. There is one best combination of the scale & zoom buttons; patience will find it. Then tuck the thing away where no one will try to fiddle with the buttons once you have it set up properly.
Q: 4. What is the part number for a replacement 5v power supply?
A: The power supply is not sold separately. If you wish one, we have been asked by KanexPro to say if you want one, please contact KanexPro directly. Support@kanexpro.com
Q: 5. What video capture software does this work best with? I'm on a Mac. Thanks.
A: This is not a capture device therefore it can not connect to your computer or interact with any software. First you will need to get a capture device such as the Atomos Connect 4K (BH #ATOMCON001 • MFR #ATOMCON001) to capture the HDMI output from this converter into your computer and then you can use just about any capture software that you like. some of the popular ones are vMix Basic HD Live Production Software (Download) B&H # VMSCSIVMIXBS MFR # SCSI-VMIX-BASIC and Telestream Wirecast Studio for Windows B&H # TEWCSW MFR # WC-STU-W
Q: 6. Will this work with an Atomos external recorder like my Shogun Inferno? I need to connect this to an old VHS camera and record the S-Video or RCA signal straight from camera into the Atomos Shogun but I know Atomos is very picky. Anybody here have tested this product with Atomos? Thanks
A: Works with Odyssey 7Q+....
Q: 7. I have an old Sony J-10 Betacam SP player with DV outputs that I'd like to digitize some old BetaSP tapes - will this work, and if so, is there a software interface to this product?
A: There are a list of J-10 input/output interfaces:Sync- BNC (x 1 input)Composite Video- BNC (x 1 output)Composite Video- RCA (x 1 output)S-Video- 4-Pin (x 1 output)FireWire- 6-Pin (x 1 output)Analog Component Video- 3-BNC (x 1 output)Audio- XLR (x 2 output)Audio- RCA (x 2 output)RS-422A- 9-Pin (x 1)RS-232C- 9-Pin (x 1)Headphones- 1/4-Inch Stereo (x 1 output)You don't need all of them EXEPT FireWire - 6-Pin (x 1 output)Connect it directly to your computer. Standard packages as iMovie or Premiere are working with FireWire very well (you have to have FireWire input on your computer, which is standard for old Mac, or Thunderbolt/FireWire adapter, or other FireWire input adapter for PC).With FireWire you will have the highest image quality, which is impossible with other output interfaces.
Q: 8. If a 4:3 aspect ratio composite video signal is input, will the 4:3 aspect ratio be preserved when the hdmi output is displayed on a modern monitor, or is the image stretched to 16:9 aspect ratio?
A: This device allows you to select the scaling and zooming that works best for the image.
Q: 9. Is the composite output aspect ratio 4x3 or 16x9?
A: The output aspect ratio is 4x3, and is a standard NTSC analog 640 horizontal by 480 vertical lines (interlaced), which can be displayed by any device with a composite (yellow RCA connector) input. The Kanex will accept an HDMI 480, 720, or 1080 vertical line input and downscale it to 480 lines. However, the output image you see depends on the format of the HDMI input and the formatting capabilities of composite display. Formatting refers to the ability to crop, fill, or distort the display. Since a 16x9 format will not directly fit a 4x3 display, one of these 3 options must be used: Cropping removes left and right side portions of the image to fill the display. Distortion squeezes in the sides of the image to fill the display. Filling adds black bars at the top and bottom of the image (Letterbox mode) to fill the display. The Kanex does no cropping or distortion; with a standard 16x9 HDMI input signal, it displays in Letterbox mode. None of the image is cropped or distorted, but instead filled to fit the 640x480 (4x3) format. In my situation, I pull 16x9 video from a PC, edit on an old composite 4x3 DVR, and display on an old 4x3 CRT. Output quality is good with very good color. I do notice some brightness and contrast shifts from the source, which need touching up on the display unit or color corrector if you have one.Hope this helps!
Q: 10. has anyone powered this unit with USB power instead of plugging it into the wall? Does it need to be plugged into the wall?
A: Hi Mark. The unit requires a 5 volt DC source at 2 amps. Any power supply of 5 volts DC with at least a 2 amp rating will power the unit. So, if you have a USB power supply of 5 volts that can supply the amp rating it should work. Please be aware of the polarity of the power supply you are using. And no, I have not tried powering the unit from a USB port or power supply, but it is a good question.
