Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you select specific files from the bare harddrive and drag and drop to your computer? Just wasn't clear on the software you can use with it.

A: This dock will act like a USB drive. Accessing files on the drives will be based on the file system of the computer and the disks.

Q: 2. Is this dock a good solution to backup a Synology NAS?

A: Not sure. We use this dock to back up (and occasionally retrieve) individual project files before deleting from our server. For that it works great.

Q: 3. Hi, will this fit an early 2009 iMac (EMC 2266, MB417LL)?

A: Hi, I think it will fit, Thogh my Mac is the 2010 model, so it might be wise to look in the Mac site to see if it's difrent.Good luck

Q: 4. Can this item be used with others laptop as Asus etc.?

A: There is no way of knowing the shape and layout of your Asus optical drive bracket which is what this device replaces. It's possible, but you'd have to open up your Asus and have a look. the data and power cable connections will be the same but the shape, size, and mounting points of the Asus bracket may differ. You may want to use an external drive if your skills and tool set for working on laptops is limited.

Q: 5. This states that in the description that it has a USB-C type 1 interface and then later it says that it has a USB-C type 2 interface. Which one is it?

A: It is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection using the Via Labs VL820 chipset.

Q: 6. Will this run on 240V AC?

A: Yes, the OWC Drive Dock USB Type-C Dual Drive Bay Solution BH #OWTCDRVDCK has a 100 to 240 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz power supply.

Q: 7. The "Most Helpful Critical Review" mentions that transferring data between the two drive bays in this USB-C dock is extremely slow. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it possible that review was for the Thunderbolt-2 version with only one SATA-to-USB chip, while this USB-C version has two SATA-to-USB chips?

A: The review is for this specific product, not the Thunderbolt version. I would keep in mind that without knowing the full story of any review, it is hard to know what went wrong. It could be user error or a specific problem with the system or drive configuration being used. If you have any issues with the product, we have a 30 day return policy. If you have any other questions, please reach out to pc@bhphotovideo.com so we can discuss further.

Q: 8. Does this dock allow for cloning of drives without need for a computer?

A: No, the OWC Drive Dock USB Type-C Dual Drive Bay Solution BH #OWTCDRVDCK requires being connected to a computer for operation.

Q: 9. Can I use this USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 dock in conjunction with Apple’s “Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter” on my old iMac/MacBook Pro, with connecting to its Thunderbolt 2 port?

A: You could with an adapter like this one. https://bhpho.to/2oDpzNy

Q: 10. Have there been any issues or reports of random drive disconnections with this USB type c version of this dock on Mac OSX? I have seen (and experienced first hand) random unclean drive ejections with the thunderbolt 2 version of this dock.

A: This product has a very low return rate and I have not seen a problem with sudden drive ejections.

My old 27 iMac with a quad core I7 deserved a speed bump by adding a SSD for it's OS X 10.10 beta and apps. It's boot time increased significantly and I could not be happier. The handsome blue aluminum drive enclosure was a bolt-on upgrade replacing the old Apple SuperDrive. I've given the computer to my grand-daughter and hope she enjoys working with it for several years. It's a step up from the dual core laptop we gave her a few years back.

Installation was fairly straightforward. Anyone with basic computer knowledge will understand the steps needed. The necessary tools also came in the box which was a nice touch. I opted to get this unit over the generic *caddy available for about half the price and I'm very glad I did. The quality and fit were perfect.

No problem with the installation. Make sure to look at the installation video on the web site. Take your time and get the proper tools needed. I now have two hard drive, one SSH and the original 500GB ready for my data in place of the DVD drive.
