The 3-stop, 77mm Tiffen Combination Light Balancing 81EF/ND Filter combines the effects of an 81EF light balancing filter with a neutral density filter. An 81EF filter, the strongest in the 81 series, will more than replace the yellow missing from the image and place all skin tones on a distinctly "warmish" level. Neutral density filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light entering the lens. They have no effect on color balance and are very useful when you want to shoot high-speed film outdoors on a very bright day.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminum rings. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process.

  • Decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their backgrounds
  • Allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand, or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure

    Neutral Density Factors
  • ND 0.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)

Q: 1. is it ok to stack two of these the 3 stop and the 2 stop? will it effect the picture quality? or create any color shift if stacked? also will it work if stacked with cp?

A: Stacking filters will always degrade the image quality

Q: 2. I have the sigma 16mm F1.4 and will be taking pictures of buildings and structures on a trip. Will this filter make a difference in the quality of my pictures?? please help, Im a beginner.

A: A quality filter such as Hoya, B+W, or Breakthrough will not diminish the quality of your image. If they did, we would not be able to sell them. The more important question Jose is what do you wish to do with this filter? So that we may be of the best assistance, please write regarding what you wish to do. provideo@bhphoto.com

Q: 3. Is this filter compatible with 16-50 mm lens (Sony a6000 kit lens)? Thanks you.

A: Because the 16-50 would need a 40.5mm filter, to use this filter you would need a step-up ring.

Q: 4. I was gnderin what is the function of two screws that are on the filter? I've realized the range was limited and I thought something was off. Then I unscrewed them and having the ability to turn the top glass 360 degrees, now I have full range of Nd, and it saved my life. I figured the glasses are not detachable. So, now I am confused about the function of those screws. They put hard stops for sure but those hard stops were limiting the actual range of the filter. Either mine was a faulty one, or there is something else.

A: The installed screw along the filter ring are prevent the filter from being adjusted past the highest density, which would cause an X shaped pattern to appear in your frame.

Q: 5. Does this fit the Sony 24-70 Gmaster lens?

A: No, you would need the 82mm version. Which is the Hoya 82mm ND (NDX8) 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) (http://bhpho.to/2aYyUXX).

Q: 6. Is this filter compatible with 16-50 mm lens (Sony a6000 kit lens)? Thank you.

Q: 8. Hello, will this ND filter setup work with a Leica R lens? if so, which ones? I have a 50mm f2 Summicron, & a 24mm Elmarit f2.8. I need an ND filter that will work with both of these. Thanks very much!Julian Wayser

A: There are many versions of the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron-R lens. Early versions (1964-1976 black; 1964-1966 chrome) were a Series VI + 14160 (Series VI - E44 filter adapter) and later II models (1976-2009 black) are Internal thread for screw-in type filters E 55 size with a Built-in, telescopic hood. The 24mm f/2.8 Elmarit-R was a Series 8 and our records show some may have been an E60. 72mm to Series 7 Filter Adapter B&H # LEARS77282mm to Series 8 Filter Adapter B&H # LEARS88255mm NDs http://bhpho.to/1m7oEIA

Q: 9. What are the meaning of the numbers from 1 to 12 on the filter? Can I use it to adjust an exact ND stop like ND8 or ND16?

A: The 1-12 scale is a half-stop scale that allows you to more precisely set the filter to 0.3 (1-stop) through 1.8 (6 stop) increments, as well as halfway in between any of those stops. It is not exactly related to ND8 or ND16 stops as those would be 0.9 (3-stops) and 1.2 (4-stops), though you could use this 1-12 scale to set those at numbers 6 and 8.

Q: 10. Will this fit on Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art for Canon?

A: Your Sigma 30mm 1.4 reads 30mm 1:1.4 DC 62 on the barrel. 62 stands for filter thread size. Since this filter is 62mm NDx8, it will fit your lens.

I use this ND filter for video. I've heard that it has a lot of problems for long exposure stills, so make sure you do your research if you're looking to pick this up for stills. For video though, it works like a champ. I've used it multiple times filming outside on bright sunny days that would normally require me to stop down exposure, taking away my depth of field. With this ND filter you will be able to shoot wide open, even in extermely bright situations. ONE CAVEAT: you cannot attach a hood to your camera if you have this filter on.

A moderate price, you can have a neutral density filter 82mm, which will be very useful in photography, video and doing long exposures without extreme vignetting. You can not use the hood but no big problem.

The Tiffen ND filter works like it should, and so far has allowed for settings that would normally not work in high light conditions. Much cheaper than buying multiple ND filters, as the adjustments cover the full range I need, from a bit cloudy to bright blue skies.

Variable ND is essential in photographing moving water, wind, or any action where you want the impressionistic side of your creativity to how through. Tiffen makes excellent filters, and this one is a fine example. Reasonably priced for priceless images.

This variable ND filter makes it easy to shoot nice silky water. Simply set to the MIN setting to lock focus and then increase the filter to get 1/2 second or slower shutter speed. Use manual focus, aperture and shutter speed for best results. I tried the Big Stopper (10 stops) but, it makes focusing a hassle. This variable ND filter (8 stops max) is MUCH easier to use.
