Tiffen #21 Orange Filter (77mm)

Tiffen #21 Orange Filter (77mm)

$181.98 $274.79

The 77mm #21 Orange Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and creates separation between the tones. The filter absorbs blue and blue-green colors, rendering blues darker such as for skies in landscape or aerial photos and water in marine shots. The filter has a filter factor of 4.5, so you must increase your exposure by 2 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this fit on a Tokina Opera 16-28mm. I already have a 77mm tiffen nd filter. Will this be useful?

A: No but you can use this Fotodiox filter holder kit and use 145mm filters: https://bhpho.to/2YI0Md2

Q: 2. Is this filter front-threaded to stack other filters?

A: These filters allow stacking.

Q: 3. What is the filter factor of this?

A: The filter factor of the Leica E39 Green Filter is 1 stop.

Q: 4. Can I mount this on top of a circular polarizing filter? Is there a downside to doing that?

A: The Tiffen VND filter consists of two circular polarizing filters...two CP filters together create the VND effect. Mounting this on top of a circular polarizing filter may cause some undersired effects such as cross polarization, vignetting in addition to difficulty adjusting the two filters as both turn and are adjusted by hand... if you mount the CP, then the VND it would be difficult to control both as they are turning. We recommend using a straight ND and then a CP instead.

Q: 5. Does this filter have a front thread?

A: Yes, the filter has a 52mm front thread.

Q: 6. Are these a good solution for using with Rokinon cine lens (which don’t have a filter thread to screw anything into)? Trying to work out how I use fixed ND and polarizer filters with the Rokinons without a matte box (when using on a gimbal).

A: It entirely depends on the Rokinon lens you are speaking of. Virtually all the Rokinon cine lenses take filters (on exception would be the 14mm) whereas the Rokinon Xeens cannot and you would most likely use this: NiSi 114mm Shatter-Proof Protector Filter B&H # NIR114EXP Generally on a gimbal, a matte box is not used and only one maybe two screw on filters would be considered for obvious size and weight issues. In order that we may further assist you, please write telling us in more detail of what you wish to do. sales@bhphoto.com.

Q: 7. Can I use a 4 x 4 filter with this?

A: The Tiffen Pro 100 is designed to accomodate 100mm Tiffen filters (4mm thick), which are 4x4 or 4x5.65.

Q: 8. Has anyone tried using this holder with the Lee foundation Rings?

A: This Pro100 Filter Holder only works with specific Tiffen adapter rings.

Q: 9. what is the filter faction of this filter? Is there any exposure adjustment I should care before shooting?

A: the filter factor of this would be 3, so you must increase by 1 2/3 of a stop roughly.

Q: 10. Hi, this filter fit all type of summicron lens ?

A: It will only fit a Summicron lens that has a 39mm thread mount as the thread mount sizes do differ in the Summicron line.

Am using the orange filter to enhance tone separation with staining developers.

I regularly use B+W filters of all colors (but mostly orange) in my work and find them to be of the highest quality glass with the least impact on image quality, from 35mm to 4x5 and digital.

If you have good lenses don't use cheap filters. This will cost a little more but they will honor te glass between the camera and your filter. German glass stands on its own as far as quality. This is a great filter to shoot infrared with a converted camera, but also one you can use with analog cameras to darken skies, lighten skin tomes and other effects in black and white or if shooting color in film its perfect for dramatic silueta at sunset or sunrise. With digital cameras we do a lot with White balance or in editing but used creatively its a great filter to have.

Everything about this filter is first class. I know it is branded as a "basic" filter but honestly this is the filter brand all black and white contrast filters are measured by. And I know what most people are thinking. Why can't I just use software to get the same effective sky or other effect using a digital filter. You can, but a digital filter won't ever remove the UV haze or sharpen a lens by removing the blue content out of the lens. Honestly, the only time I would ever need to use a digital filter instead is for a creative option. I can shoot one frame with and one frame without if I need that option for creativity. I have plans to buy the red and deep red as well. Along with the hollywood black magic 1/4 and 1/2 filters. Schneider and their B+W brand is excellent beyond expectations. Top German filter quality.

Thanks B&H!

Jay
