Tiffen 52mm 81b Light Balancing Filter

The Tiffen 52mm 81B Light Balancing Filter helps to decrease the color temperature by 300K in order to warm the image slightly in order to match the color quality of illumination. When using an 81B filter, you will be able to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3500K. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.3-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will these filters (52 mm) fit a Nikon 5300 DSLR?

A: As long as you're using a lens that has a 52mm filter thread size, this kit will work with the Nikon 5300. I have the Nikon 18-55mm lens that I use this kit with. I also have a Nikon 55-300 lens that uses 58mm filters so I have two different sizes for my Nikon lenses I use with my 5300. Most lenses have a filter size indicator on the bottom side so you know what size to use. Look for a circle with a diagonal line through it then a number, which is the mm size of the filter threads. For instance, 52.

Q: 2. So you can put all 3 ND on each other and make a 9 stop ND filter? Will these all stack with each other with a step up ring on? I have a 55mm thread filter lense I want to use this for to but I want them to stack with all of my lenses with step down rings

A: You can stack all three of these filters to create 9 stops, however by doing so you are increasing barrel length. This may result in vignetting as your camera may see the filter rings when shooting at wide focal lengths. A step up ring from 55 to 72mm may help with this, a step down ring would have the opposite effect and result in severe vignetting.

Q: 3. What is the difference between close-up lenses and extension tubes? Is one better than the other for close up work?

A: Close-up lenses are less expensive and will allow the use of all electronic functions of the lens. They are like putting a magnifier in front of the lens. However image quality is slightly degraded due to adding another optical element. Extension tubes magnify by increasing lens distance but you will lose some functions of the lens.

Q: 4. how do these tiffen lens stack up to Coken filters?

A: Cokin are square or rectangular and you need to use a filter holder and adapter ring. These you just screw on the lens, not need to carry extra parts. The advantage of the Cokin is if you want to stack many filters and you are using a wide angle lens, there is less chance of vignetting with the Cokin in that situation. Also in the Cokin if you use a graduated neutral density you can raise and lower the filter to place the horizon anywhere. With a round filter if you get a graduated ND the horizon will always be in the center.

Q: 5. If the lens I am purchasing is a 50mm would I need the 52mm filters?

A: Ashley, please check the filter thread diameter specifications for the lens you are purchasing. B&H lists this in the specifications for each lens. There is no way to determine the correct filter thread given the information provided.

Q: 6. Do these filters have screw on threads so you can stack filters?

A: Yes, the fronts of the filters are threaded at 77mm size also so you may stack them upon one another.

Q: 7. Does this filter add a color cast to the image?

A: Yes when it’s at its darkest. Makes everything blue and unusable. Other than that no. I still get a lot out of it.

Q: 8. Do these filters still use the 58mm lens cap?

A: Yes, filters with 58mm threads will use a 58mm lens cap.

Q: 9. Do these introduce any color cast?

A: Neutral density filters do not cause any color cast or affect the color of an image, but rather, darken an image.

Q: 10. Can this filter be used on Tokina 12mm-24mm lens without vingetting?

A: There is a good chance that there will be vignetting on the Tokina 12-24 when using a variable ND filter such as the Tiffen 77mm.

Use it on Nikkor lenses with 52mm mount. This filter mounts on them and never goes off, for protection of the lens. Very clear and easily cleaned. Great value

If I'm going to shell out more than a few hundred dollars for a good lens, then it is well worth a few extra bucks to keep the front lens safe. I have this filter on both my Canon 70-200 f2.8L and my Sigma 10-20 lenses and I am glad I do. It gives me that extra piece of mind that if it is scratched, cracked, or really messed up, there is a pretty good chance that my camera lens is safe. Why take the chance?

I got three of these for my new lenses. It's a no brainer that you need these. I picked the Tiffen because they are low cost but high quality. 'nuff said.

I bought two of these to protect two of my lenses with out affecting my photos too much. So far all of the photos I took over the holidays still look great and my lens is well protected. Will definitely buy more for all of my future lenses. The rings felt very strong and solid and the lens doesn't feel cheap.

I signed up for a class in using my new product& so far I just love it. It is easy to use & less complicated because you do not have to change the lens and its filter each time you use it. I take shots of wild life in my area & it works like a charm.
