This 3-stop, Series 9 Tiffen Combination Color Conversion 85B/ND Glass Filter will produce natural colors when shooting with tungsten film outdoors. Without any filtration, using tungsten film in daylight will produce a bluish cast in a photograph.

Neutral density filters have several uses and offer the possibility of achieving otherwise unachievable results. Neutral density filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrast-filled landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, overexposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and underexposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this Tiffen ND filter provide true color images? i.e., convey the same color compared to without the ND filter?

A: No, the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter, will function like a polarizer to achieve the variable effect, which will change the hue of the image, similar to a polarizer.

Q: 2. does it create a X in the final photo like some of the variable nd filters?

A: Nope!

Q: 3. Will this work with a Lee filter holder?

A: If you purchase the LEE Filters Side Guide Screws 1/2" - Package of 4, B&H # LES.5, for use with the holder included in the LEE Filters Foundation Kit, then yes, it will allow you to use thicker 4mm glass filters such as the Formatt Hitech 4x4" HD ND 0.9 Glass Filter (3-Stop), B&H # FOND.9444, with the LEE Filters holder.

Q: 4. Will this filter blurt water in seascapes

A: This is a 10 stop filter which only allows 1/1000th of all light to pass through it. This will enable you to do long exposures with your camera on top of a tripod... you can blur anything that moves, including streams, waterfalls, clouds, etc. Please note, this is the AXent version of our XLE filters which has no IR protection and is only recommended for B&W photography. When shooting this filter with today's digital cameras, the sensor will also pick up IR light during a long exposure which will cause a color shift and your photo will come out magenta or possibly green. To eliminate this, you need the XLE AdvantiX (some IR protection) or the XLE ApeX filter (full IR protection).

Q: 5. Hi thereI'd like to know if there is any difference between this ND filter and the one (please see the link).Thankshttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/86020-REG/Tiffen_45650ND9_4_x_5_65_Neutral.html

A: The difference between the two filters is that theTIND.9W45P filter (the more expensive of the two) is made with Tiffens Water White Glass. This will make the filter less likely to give a color cast to the image.

Q: 6. Does this filter have multi-coating?

A: Technically it is not a multi-coated filter. But is made up of layers that allow different amounts of infrared light to pass through the filter and hit the sensor.

Q: 7. The overview makes this claim: Filter does not affect coloration of the image . It coloured my images green. When will the overview be corrected?

A: If your images are green when using this filter you should instead use the Tiffen ApeX filter. The green is caused by IR light reaching your sensor, the ApeX filter filters out the IR light while the AXent does not. We will speak to B&H in regards to correcting the description of this product.

Q: 8. what neutral density filter can I use for a macro lens sp 90mm f/2.8di macro 1:1 by Tamron?

A: What is the filter thread diameter?

Q: 9. Is there a 6-9 stops VND filter ?

A: The 6-9 stop version of the Freewell True Color Variable ND 1-5 Stop Filter for Sherpa Series Cases would be the Freewell True Color Variable ND 6-9 Stop Filter for Sherpa Series Cases (BH #FRFWSHVND69).

Q: 10. Is this filter reflect or does it absorb the light? I am worried about heating of the surface of the filter.

A: This is a Neutral Density filter which is designed to limit the amount of light reaching your cameras sensor. It works very similarly to a pair of sunglasses. This particular ND filter is 5 stops (1.5) meaning only 1/32 of all light passes through it. This filter is commonly used in sunlight without any issues regarding the surface of the filter heating.

The Cavision 4x4 ND filter is optical glass, 4mm thick and very good quality. The hight quality packaging material is great for storing in my gear bag and easy to remove the filter and insert into a holder.
