The matte black KM 185 MT Microphone from Neumann is a hypercardioid pattern, pressure gradient condenser microphone intended for live sound reinforcement and broadcast, as well as recording applications.

The KM 180 series microphones feature an output stage based on the KM 100. Transformerless circuitry and balanced output result in high output gain with a very low noise floor and no coloration to the output signal.

The KM 185 MT is powered via +48V phantom power. Its 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response provides flexibility for use in a wide range of recording situations. The KM 185 provides attenuation at the off-axis sections of the mic, and is suitable for X,Y and ORTF stereo miking, announcer's mic for broadcast, spot capturing of drum overheads, strings, wind instruments, percussion, piano, and amp cabinets. The KM 185 handles sound pressure levels up to 142 dB allowing close miking of instruments high in transient (peak) level response.

The hypercardioid polar pattern offers greater attenuation at the off-axis sections of the microphone, resulting in a tighter pattern with even less noise caused by ambiance.

The KM 185 features the same output stage electronics as the KM 100. Transformerless circuitry and quiet balanced output design ensure a clean, high-gain output signal without any coloration. The KM 185 is powered via +48V phantom power, and its 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response provides flexibility for use in a wide range of recording situations. The KM 185 can handle sound pressure levels up to 142 dB, allowing fairly close miking of instruments.

The slim design and rugged construction allow easy microphone placement while remaining road worthy.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can you mount an ak45 capsule on this mount? or does it need another power capsule behind it?

A: The KM 145 is a modular microphone system. Consisting of the AK 45 capsule mounted a top the KM 100 phantom power supply output stage. So it does not need another power supply. The KM 100 is always the output stage for the currently available 7 different capsules. Available are omni diffuse-field equalized, omni free-field equalized, cardioid, wide-angle cardioid, cardioid with bass roll-off, hypercardioid, and figure-8. In addition there are accessories available for different applications. Such as swivel mounts, table stands, goose-necks, stereo mounts, etc.

Q: 2. Does this work with Nikon Monarch 7 (8*30)? What's the width/length of the mounting plate at the bottom?

A: Item Dimensions LxWxH 5.2 x 6.1 x 1.4 inches It dose not have a mounting plate. The bottom just has a 1/4"-20 screw hole to mount onto ant tripod head.

Q: 3. What is the size of the base plate?

A: It is a standard size that fits all tripods - exactly like a fast-release camera mount for a tripod.Same as follows: The Manfrotto 200PL Quick Release Plate with 1/4 -20 Screw and 3/8 Bushing Adapter is the replacement quick release plate for all heads that use the RC2 (3157N) system. The plate comes with a 1/4 -20 camera screw and a 3/8 bushing adapter, and is compatible with 35mm and standard thread-mounted medium format cameras.RC2 Quick Release System

Q: 4. Do you need mixer to plug in computer?

A: This studio condenser microphone requires an audio interface, with an XLR mic preamp that provides 48 volt phantom power, that would then convert the analog signal to a digital signal to go into the computer. The Audient iD14 10x4 USB Audio Interface, BH #AUID14 is an example of an audio interface with high-quality mic preamp's and superior analog to digital conversion.

Q: 5. Is having a matched pair important for doing a two person YouTube video podcast via two overhead KM 185 boomed mics?

A: Matched pair microphones becomes a critical choice for critical vocal and musical recording. Not an issue for your application at all.

Q: 6. Does the kit include the mic mount?

A: Yes, the shock mount for this microphone includes the mic holder.

Q: 7. Does the microphone come with the SG2 mounting ring?

A: No, the Neumann SG2 Stand Mount does not fit the Neumann U 89 i Large-Diaphragm Multipattern Condenser Microphone. The microphone comes with a wooden storage box and the mounting accessories are available separately. The Neumann SG 289 Stand Mount for U 89 i Studio Microphone (B&H # NESG289) and the Neumann EA89I - Elastic Suspension Shock Mount for use with Neumann U89 Microphones - Nickel (B&H # NEEA89I) are the two options that Neumann offers for mounting the U 89 i Microphone.

Q: 8. What other mics did you compare before purchasing? Looking for voiceovers primarily.

A: The 103 is an excellent choice of microphones, depending on the person using it (voice characteristics) and how it will be used, specfically, the room acoustics and level of quiet, as this mic is very sensitive and will "hear" everything. Great suggestion, esp if purchased with shock mount: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/302934-REG/Neumann_TLM_103_ANNIVERSARY_TLM103_Condenser_Microphone_Package.html OTHER considerations: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/676495-REG/AKG_3059Z00060_C_414_XL_II.html For a more challenging acoustic environment: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182891-REG/shure_shure_sm_7b_brodcaster_package.html

Q: 9. what is tip and ring signal ?

A: The manufacturer has not provided any details regarding the internal wiring for the connectors on the Neumann MIDI Adapter Set for MT 48 Audio Interface.

Q: 10. Thinking of getting a KEKS KM-Q for my Yashica Mat 124 TLR. Which one should give me ease of use, Back Display or Top Display?

A: The Keks KM-Q Light Meter with Back Display (Chrome) is best for the Yashica Mat 124 Twin-Lens Reflex.
