Mainly used to study the photosheric, chromospheric, prominence and atmospheric areas of the sun, Daystar Filters' 0.4Å bandwidth Quantum H-Alpha Bandpass Filter is built to specifically improve solar surface contrast and fine chromosphere details. The filter is installed at the rear of the OTA, rather than before the primary objective so it can be used on telescopes of virtually any aperture and easily move between a variety of scopes. This version of the Quantum is designed for professional research-grade users who require tight tolerances and improved quality. To accomplish this, Daystar improved homogeneity and onband transmitance values across the substrate surface, so these filters require additional quality control steps, as well as additional fabrication and testing times.

The filter comes calibrated for the H-alpha wavelength at 6562.8Å and using the electronic tuning system, which is accurate to 0.1Å, the wavelength can be offset as much as 1.0Å in either direction for Doppler shift compensation and to highlight specific areas. The Quantum is outfitted with an RS-232 serial port that allows it to be connected to a computer and enables remote viewing of the wavelength display and control of the tuning. It runs on 12 VDC power and comes with a 6' power cord and a set of international outlet plugs for the US, EU, UK, and Australia.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have the Celestron Eclipsmart 8" Solar Filter for my 8" SCT. Is it enough or I still need to buy an Energy Reduction filter?

A: In solar viewing, solar filters are for viewing the photosphere of the sun. The H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter is for viewing the chromosphere of the sun.

Q: 2. will this work with an ED80T CF Triplet telescope?

A: Just got mine last week and got great views on my old SV AT1010 80mm f6 achro. Just saw black at first then, per the instructions, turned the tuning dial 2 clicks clockwise. In a few minutes i was seeing great chromo and proms as well. I got the front mount uv/ir blocker as i will be using it on a larger scope as well. You won't get a full disc view though because the focal length is greater than 450

Q: 3. Will this work on an Orion Astroview 120ST (600mm, f/5)? If so, will I need any additional adapters or extension tubes (for focusing)? Thank you.

A: The DayStar Filters QUARK H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter (Prominence) BH #DADSZ4P • MFR #DSZ4P simply inserts into 1.25" or 2" diagonals and accepts 1.25" eyepieces. This design enables the use of nighttime telescopes for solar viewing. In addition to the tunable H-alpha filter, the Quark also functions as a 4.3x Barlow lens, with a 2-element lens system designed to be telecentric which flattens the field of view and reduces parallax, and optical coatings that are optimized for the 656nm H-alpha wavelength.

Q: 4. What color does the sun appear - blue, yellow, red?

A: The sun's not yellow, it's chicken. - B. DylanActually it looks yellow through the eclipse filter. I've made some packing foam shims to hold it to the lens. It can be difficult to find the sun with your camera. I need a wide open f stop, and 1 or 2 seconds shutter.

Q: 5. I have a Apertura 75Q petzval design with internal lenses and flattener technology. will this Daystar DSZ4C be compatible?

A: The DayStar Filters QUARK H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter (Chromosphere)will fit in any telescope that accepts 1.25 inch eyepiece. It works best with refractor telescopes that are between f4 and f8.

Q: 6. how to adapt this to a camera lens with a 62mm thread (yes, this will result in some vignetting which I will have to tolerate)?

A: Currently B&H does not stock an adapter allowing the Alpine Astronomical H-Alpha 20nm Bandpass Filter (2") to a camera lens with a 62mm thread.

Q: 7. Are these left over from 2017? That's the date on the product photo.

A: The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 65-89mm OD), that B&H offers are not left overs at all.

Q: 8. DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter for Canon (Prominence): Does this provide product adequate filtration of the sun for the upcoming eclipse, or does it need to be used in consort with additional filters on camera/scope for viewing?

A: The DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter for Canon (Prominence) goes between your lens and camera. You still need a ERF (energy reflecting filter) on the front of your lens. This will prevent damage to the lens. For help choosing a ERF (energy reflecting filter) for your lens email us at sportoptics@bandh.com.

Q: 9. What is the difference between a tuned for prominences and a chromosphere filter? Is there one of them that does both better? How do I choose?

A: No, two different condition. The chromosphere is the sun's surface. The prominence is viewing sun flairs around the perimeter of the sun. .

Q: 10. What do I need to use this with my Canon 5D M4?

A: This is to fit Canon SLR and DLSR bodies. You do not need anything extra for a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

After reading all the reviews I decided to pull the trigger so that I can get more Aperture without buying a whole new HA scope. I was worried that it would be difficult to get going, or focus etc. My worries were unfounded. This thing works great. I'm having better views in my 80ED Apo than I did with my dedicated Solarmax II 60. I think I'll try it in my 127ED Apo next. The warm up times aren't bad. I just turn it on about 5 minutes before I'm about to take my scope outside and by the time I'm setup it's good to go. Sold the Solarmax. No longer need it now.

Have had a great time using this filter for observing the Sun. More so, now that I have a mount that will track the Sun automatically (Celeston AVX). I am using this filter with a Televue Pronto, and while DayStar recommends using a Televue 32mm Plossl eyepiece for best results, I was not happy with the results when using this eyepiece. The image kept blacking out and it was too difficult to find the sweet spot to keep the image visible. I wound up using a Vixen SLV 25mm eyepiece, which worked much better in my scope with this filter. The Chromosphere model yields nice views of prominences too.

This is not a filter to have just for fun. First of all it requires you to have a Full spectrum conversion on your camera. Second of all it is for a very specific use and its price is no joke, so if you don't need it I would spend my money on something else I would use more. But in my case it's been a blast. I will use a lot more my converted camera now that I have it, and just getting started with experimenting out of the users manual I have a lot of ideas to work on with this filter.
The filter only lets through UV light so exposure compensation is required and even under bright sun you will more than likely shoot on a tripod, with high ISO using slow shutter speeds. This filter is a tool, not a toy.

Its almost magic. Se what your eyes can't see. Thats what this filter does in a full conversion camera, a tripod and a photographer capable of working with tools that are not for everyone. But if you pay what it costs and wait for it to be back ordered you are more than likely a committed photographer already. The filter can be used in a lot of scientific uses but I got it once I converted a full frame DSLR with still a lot of life ahead to full spectrum and got a very large set of filters to get the most of it shooting infrared and UV photography. So far it's been a great way to open new possibilities on creative photographic exploration.

B&H had the DayStar Quark Ha solar filter in stock and in my hands within 3 days, excellent selection and service!

I have a 50mm Lunt solar telescope which provides excellent views and images of the entire solar disk. I purchased the DayStar Quark Ha etalon as a complement to provide close up views with higher resolution of the solar surface features. Currently, I have the Quark configured with an 81mm William Optics doublet, the views and images have not disappointed. For imaging I am using the ZWO ASI178MM camera and binning the pixels 2x2 or 3x3.

Future plans are to configure the DayStar Quark etalon with a higher focal length, slower telescope combined with a faster and larger pixel camera to improve the resolution. The DayStar Quark etalon is a very versatile piece of technology to view our star, I'm extremely pleased with the purchase.

Caveat: Be sure to do your research re. Hydrogen Alpha solar observation and imaging prior to purchase. It's necessary to understand the hardware, challenges and especially the hazards inherent with solar observation to avoid disappointment, frustration and most importantly, injury to yourself.
