The FetHead from TritonAudio is a low-noise, in-line microphone preamplifier that provides improved sound for ribbon and dynamic microphones. The electronics are housed in a metal chassis with a balanced 3-pin female XLR input and a balanced 3-pin male XLR output. It is suitable for use at home, in the studio, on tour, and more.

FetHead's circuit uses phantom power but shields it from the input and the microphone's output, providing protection to the microphone. Attach FetHead to a balanced microphone cable and plug it straight into the microphone. Switch on phantom power and enjoy clean gain. This works with any microphone.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the the regular version the correct one to use with an h4n and rode ntg2 combo?

A: Yes if you power the NTG2 with internal batteries and feed the Fethead with phantom power from the H4N. Would be best to buy the Fethead specifically designed for use with condenser mics that passes power to the NTG2.

Q: 2. I plan to use this with an h4n zoom or h5 zoom or a tascam 60d , which fethead should I get, there is an in line and fathead regular or fethead phantom? please kindly clarify before I order. thanks!

A: It depends on the mic you are using. if your mic needs phantom power (condenser) then get the fethead phantom. If the mic does not need phantom power (dynamic) get the regular.

Q: 3. Can this be used with an unbalanced stereo mic? Considering purchasing this to shield my AT2022 from phantom power but that mic outputs stereo on XLR.

A: sorry can't help with that one - i don't have a stereo mic so wouldn't know. fethead works great with my ribbon & SM7 though. try manufacturers (Triton Audio). good luck!

Q: 4. Is this appropriate to use with an MKE 600 and Zoom H5?

A: It would not be ideal to use the standard FetHead with the MKE 600, since the MKE 600 requires phantom power, and this version of the standard FetHead does not supply it. The standard FetHead is designed primarily for microphones that don't require external power. If you really need to pre-preamplify the MKE 600, it would be more appropriate to use the FetHead Phantom model. Otherwise, you would have to install a AA battery inside the MKE 600.

Q: 5. Regular vs phantom amplification level. The regular claims 27db of amp and the phantom says 18db. Does the regular actually have stronger amplification? I heard from testers that the regular only boosts about 20db in reality is that true? If I get the phantom pass one will it amplify less?

A: I use a regular Fethead and it delivers a boost of about 20 db. I use it often with my Zoom and Tascam small recorders and it does a great job of boosting gain-hungry mics such as SM7B and RE20. Hope this helps.

Q: 6. What does this run on? Does it require batteries? Since it supplies you with Phantom Power, do you need to put in any batteries or where does it get the power from? How long will this last or its 24/7?

A: It passes through phantom power from the host device. it does not provide phantom power by itself. There is no power supply. This is an an in-line device.

Q: 7. Plan on using this product with my Rode NTG2 and dr-40. which version do i buy?

A: I do all of my low end noise removal with SoundSoap or Izotope RX5. I would go with the version without the high pass filter. If you are using a ribbon mic that requires you to use a lot of gain, then the version with the high pass filter would probably serve you well.

Q: 8. Works whit beta 87?

A: This would work with a Shure Beta87a.

Q: 9. Will the Triton Audio FetHead In-Line Microphone Preamp work with the Sony ECM-44B - Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone?

A: The Sony ECM-44B is a condenser but can't be phantom powered. The ECM-44B requires an internal AA battery thus the FetHead Regular will work fine. If you want to use an ECM-55B or ECM-77B you'll need the FetHead Phantom unless you want to locally power the mic with an AA battery. Once locally powered, the mic will behave like a standard dynamic mic.

Q: 10. Is there any advantage to using this fethead when I already have my ntg3 connected to the nice preamps of a mixpre-d?

A: You will be able to use significantly less gain.

Gave my Shure SM7b just what it needed. Could perhaps use that 5 more a cloud lifter brings to the table but not necessarily worth the $100 additional bucks to get it.

Works fine. I wish this came with a user's guide, though.

Plug it in and turn on phantom power to the channel. Instant boost to your dynamic microphone.
Works like a charm!!

Using this preamp for my Rode NTG-2 and Zoom 5. Made a noticeable difference, would purchase again if I had to do it over. Thanks!

Absolutely amazing!  Before the FetHead, on my DR-40 DAR and Mac-based mic preamp (Zoom TAC-2), I have to crank up the volume for my Sennheiser MD421 to at least 90%.  Now my dynamic MD421 has about the same output as a condenser mic, like my Neumann U87.  I love the inconspicuous, in-line plug-in.

Got this due to my Focusrite not having enough gain for my SM7B. With everything in place I can get the gain comfortably within the working range of the Focusrite without much distortion or noise.

I have a Shure 55SH and it is not known for being a very sensitive microphone. It looks great on my desk but was not getting used much since I had to crank the mixer gain up adding a lot of noise. I have the Mackie Big Knob studio (love it!) and it has 48 volts out (phantom power) so it was easy to plug it in the back inline with the XLR mic cable. So now I have a lot more volume and a lot less noise.

The FetHead plugged in to a budget ribbon mic followed by a decent, budget, mic pre amp and THEN an interface, allows for quiet gain staging and a saturated sound. The tone variables are huge ! Plenty of signal. This unit uses 48+ phantom power but protects the mics ribbon element from damage. Thats handy when also using a condenser mic that needs +48 and you cant segregate which channels get phantom power. Nice price and the shipping was crazy fast. This piece is fantastic.

SMALL AND SAFE I USE IT WITH THE SHURE X2U INTERFACE, I LOVE IT

These add just enough gain so that my console/interface preamps don't have to work so hard. I actually use them in a large Dante installation where the gains are adjusted on the wall panels, not the console. So they accomplish two objectives- blocking 48v from my ribbons, and bringing the level up to where I would run a condenser mic. Also very well built.
