Designed for video and stills shooters alike, the Lumix DMC-G85 from Panasonic is a versatile Micro Four Thirds camera characterized by its quick performance, flexible photo capabilities, and UHD 4K video recording. Using a 16MP MOS sensor, this mirrorless camera has a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions, and also affords quick shooting speeds up to 10 fps with single-shot autofocus, or 6 fps with continuous autofocus, as well as up to 40 fps when using an electronic shutter function and 30 fps at 8MP with 4K PHOTO Modes. Benefitting working in difficult lighting conditions, 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization can be used to dramatically reduce the appearance of camera shake, and this IS system pairs with select lens' image stabilization systems for Dual I.S.

Complementing the imaging attributes, the camera also incorporates both a 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder as well as a 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD, which has a free-angle design to better enable working from high and low angles. Built-in Wi-Fi is also integrated into the design, which facilitates wireless image transferring and remote camera control from linked smartphones or tablets. Additionally, the body construction is weather-sealed to guard against dust and moisture for working in inclement weather conditions.

Using a 16MP Live MOS sensor, the G85 is capable of capturing clear, high-resolution stills as well as UHD 4K video. The sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution, and its design also affords a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, fast shooting performance is also afforded, with the ability to shoot at up to 40 fps with an electronic shutter function, 30 fps at 8MP using the 4K PHOTO Modes, 10 fps with AF-S and an electronic shutter, or 9 fps using a mechanical shutter with AF-S.

In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the G85 also supports recording UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100 Mbps. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported at 28 Mbps in the MP4 format, along with HD recording and Full HD in AVCHD. A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter for cleaner audio quality when shooting outdoors, or an optional external mic can be used via the 3.5mm jack.

Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:

  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 min. 59 sec, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.

  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.

  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.

Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. combines the G85's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.

For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in order to suit working with continuous shooting rates up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.

  • An integrated 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder offers a bright, clear eye-level means for composing images, and features a 0.74x effective magnification.

  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear LCD monitor has a free-angle design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.

  • The camera body features a durable weather-sealed construction that renders it both dust- and splash-proof for use in trying environmental conditions.

  • Ten programmable function buttons can be used to control a wide variety of settings and tools.

  • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated to provide approximately 330 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD, 320 shots with the EVF, or 800 shots with the Power Saver LVF mode.

  • A built-in pop-up flash is available to provide additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets.

  • A variety of bracketing modes can be used for shutter speed, aperture, and white balance settings. Focus bracketing is also possible, for up to 999 images with focus steps set in 5 levels, for focus stacking applications.

  • Creative Control modes allow you to apply a unique look to imagery in-camera, and include Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

  • Photo Styles can be used to impart a distinct quality into either stills or videos, and include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, L. Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, Cinelike V.

  • A Silent Mode can be used to mute camera noises for more discreet shooting in sound-sensitive environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Did they removed the moire filter with this too like the GX85?

A: yes - AA filter removed

Q: 2. Does the 12-60mm lens come with the lens hood in this kit?

A: Yes, the lens hood would be included with the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens included in the above camera kit.

Q: 3. Does it have clean HDMI out?

A: The Panasonic G85 does appear to have clean HDMI out.

Q: 4. Does the G85 have a plastic or metal body?

A: The front plate is magnesium, but the rest is plastic. However, the camera feels substantial and definitely not cheap or plasticky. It is also weather sealed.

Q: 5. Does this camera offer automatic, in-unit sensor cleaning?

A: Yes, it has automatic sensor cleaning.

Q: 6. Dose it have other language menus? ex: Chinese?

A: Yes, it's one of the first questions it asks you when you turn on the camera for the first time. You can also change it later.

Q: 7. Are the RAW pictures still 12-bit? When is M43 going to get 14-bit RAW?

A: It appears that the DMC-G85 has 12-Bit Raw. I wouldnt be able to say if/when a micro four thirds camera might hit the market with 14-bit.

Q: 8. How many times release does the G85 shutter unit is durable?(The GH5 & G9 showed : The shutter unit is durable for approx. 200,000 times release . Thanks.

A: Normally manufacturers do not list such numbers for there are warranty issues. I would imagine for this consumer camera, 100,000 to 125,000 would be a reasonable number.

Q: 9. Is this Lens Weather Sealed Version as well?

A: Not that I know of. But i did have an event outdoors with rain and camera got wet a bit. But nothing happened. I believe it does have a natural resistence same as iPhone 7. But it wouldn't be recommended to use under water for example

Q: 10. Are there any other remote options besides the shutter control remote for pictures or smartphone app? Something wired that can control zoom, focus, and iris?

A: Not that I know of. Smartphone app works. You can use a wired connection to fire the shutter only. Those are all I have found.

Don't be put off that it's "only" 16MP. The lack of AA filter plus improved processing means the photos look as good or better than 20MP cameras. It's lightweight and feels great in the hand. I tried the G9 and it just felt too big and uncomfortable, so I decided to stay with the G85. The image stabilization is incredible, especially with those Panasonic lenses compatible with Dual IS II. I was very pleasantly surprised with the high ISO performance as well, getting clean photos up to ISO 6400. Even though it is contrast detect AF, Panasonic's DFD AF system works amazingly well, even in low light. Honestly, it's the fastest and surest autofocus I've ever used (and I've been a photographer for 40+ years). Highly recommended.

I extensively researched the purchase of this product, having looked at more than 50 different dslr and mirrorless cameras. Prior to this camera, I had experience with film and digital slrs. I own an art company and plan on using this for streaming, once I locate the correct capture device. The camera takes very nice stills which I have printed on a commercial large-format photo printer, the finished prints are very good. This is my first Panasonic camera, but have owned Olympus, Minolta, Nikon, and the medium format Hasselblad (film camera). Having taken pictures over the years with high-end equipment, this camera takes good shots and the video, in my opinion, is very good.

Let me start, I am a Semi-Pro Photographer for more than 40 years. My current primary camera body is the Lumix G9. I was looking for a second backup body to replace by GX8 which I sold about 6 months ago (although another great camera, a little odd to handle with some larger lenses). I was holding off for the G95 but then the G85 was being offered with the same 12-60 Lens for $500 less when the G95 became available.

Money is typically not an issue with my Photography equipment but I had to seriously consider the extra cost for so few overall improvements. The small increase in Sensor size was really the only major difference. The V-Log video feature is something I'd rarely if ever use. So after careful comparisons and research I decided to go with the G85 and I am so glad I did. This camera is perfect in so many ways. The build is solid, it is weather sealed, by comparison to ther G95, lighter by 30g, battery life is longer by at least 40 more images, overall is just a tiny bit smaller which for me is perfect.

Similar to the G95, It has the same in-body 5 axis stabilisation and Dual I.S.2 (sensor + optical IS) with up to 5 stops of compensation, 4K Photo modes, contrast-based DFD autofocus, 2360k-dot OLED viewfinder with 0.74x magnification, side-hinged fully-articulated touchscreen, 4:2:2 8-bit HDMI output.

Oh and the spare Watson Battery and 32GB Memory Card are just a nice bonus (personally the bag is useless for me)

If you can grab this camera with the 12-60 lens at the $697,99 price, GET IT! You can not get a better M4/3 Camera at this price!

Everything for this camera works great except low light performance. Small sensor and slow lenses are the bottle neck for m43 cameras.

Having used Canon and Sony apsc and full frame cameras, I was surprised how good the image quality is. I can see why many pros use mft camera systems. The 12-60 is not a low light lens, but provides very good image and video quality, and the 24-120 range is great for most things I take photos of. I like it so much, I will add some prime lenses to my collection.

I've shot Nikon D7100 and Canon 5D mk II for years. I still have them and love them both but I've never had so much fun with any camera as with the G85. I just took it to Italy for two weeks and found it to be an incredible travel workhorse. Buy the 7Artisans 7.5.

People complain about the auto focus, but all you have to do is set it to face detection and adjust the sensitivity and done! The image is lovely, the video options are broad. People say the image is cold; however, there are a number of choices such as standard, vivid, etc, etc, to give you the warmth you need, or anything else. So silly. AND, for real camera people, we know this and also have post-editing for further options so it's not even an issue unless one does not understand what a menu option is.
The kit lens is really good and if you don't like it (you may though) you have a vast assortment of other options both OEM and others.
The magnesium body, solid feel and manual controls as well as menu selection and even touch screen make this so friendly regardless of preference. I do wish the main selection/options button was more embossed or stuck out further, but that's just because I'm old with less sensitivity in my fingers and a bit of callous -- hard to feel it without looking to know what I'm doing but it is so easy to use and getting used to where everything is took very little time.
I also love my Canon, but the G85 Lumix is a happy purchase. I plan on using it for short films -- why? Because it can without having to go into the $3k and up range. Knowing what you're doing will let a camera like this work for you without regret. For those with a disposable income, get the Sony A7 or others but buy this camera and keep it for on the go B-Roll, you'll be glad you did.
B&H was very helpful and it shipped very fast, packed well. Don't usually write reviews but the experience merited it.

I've been a long-time Panasonic camera user, really loved their ease of use, ergonomics, and gorgeous color in stills and video. Last year I switched briefly to the pricey Sony RX10 II because it had a headphone jack for video, and it got pretty good reviews. Alas, I never liked it (complicated menus, non-pivoting LCD screen, dimmed screen in 4K mode, etc) and replaced it with the G85. I shoot both video and photos, and the G85 handles both very well. The kit lens is excellent, as is the 5-axis in body dual stabilization. Autofocus is good (not as acurate as Sony) but very satisfactory from my trials so far. I miss the headphone jack for video, but there are plenty of workarounds. The touchscreen is a must-have in my world, and works very well. Love the beefy handgrip and the clear, concise Menu. Best bang for the buck!
