A: If properly sealed, the ink should easily last for more than a year when stored appropriately. It uses only a small amount of ink to do that, and that process does keep the ink fresh and usable indefinitely. (Please note that this comment does not necessarily apply to non Canon or non large format printers.)

A: I've had some left outside in both hot and cold weather. I would NEVER install while the cartridge is icy cold. Wait until it slowly warms up to room temperature (wait a day). Give it a little extra agitation (shake it so you are sure it's mixed - which you should do anyway as part of Canon's recommendation).
