The Audio-Technica ATM350W Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone System includes the ATM350a cardioid condenser microphone, which is a high-SPL mic that provides a clear, well-balanced response from any instrument. When teamed with the included AT8491W woodwind mount and strong, flexible AT8490 5" gooseneck, the mic can be securely fastened to any woodwind instrument and positioned to stay where you want it. The gooseneck’s rigidity ensures that it won’t flop around, no matter how aggressively you play.

The microphone’s cardioid polar pattern isolates the instrument by reducing side and rear pickup, and the switchable 80 Hz high-pass filter on the in-line power module helps control undesired low-frequency noise. The system also includes an AT8468 violin mount with a hook-and-loop fastener and a protective carrying case.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello. I wonder how noisy it is? How does it work for recording low volume stuff?

A: The AT2021 Cardioid Condenser Microphone is designed for general instrument capturing, vocals, amplifier cabinets, and similar applications. It's signal to noise ratio is 75db and has a max SPL of 145db. It features a Cardioid polar pattern, reducing sound pickup from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source.

Q: 2. Can I connect this mic through a Rode AI-1 audio interface to my PC using the XLR connector from the included power module?

A: Yes, the Audio-Technica AT831b Cardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone can be connected to an audio interface such as the Rode AI-1 using an XLR cable.

Q: 3. How well will this mic work with the lid closed?

A: The mic should work well. It's more a matter of where the mic is positioned and how it sounds. If you are using it to mic a piano, you can try moving the mic to a different position until you achieve the desired sound.

Q: 4. Will the power module fit into a xvive phantom power unit?

A: Yes, you can use the Audio-Technica Pro 35 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery (B&H # XVP1). The Pro 35 is also compatible for use with the Xvive Audio U3C Set Wireless Plug-On System for Condenser Microphones - 2.4 GHz (B&H # XVU3CSET). The transmitter in this system will supply phantom power for the mic.

Q: 5. Is the end of the cable an XLR connector? I have phantom power on my field recorder and don't want to add any power modules.

A: The Audio-Technica AT831B terminates in a TA3 (miniXLR) connector, but the included power module has a regular XLR output.

Q: 6. Do I need a pre-amp to connect it to a laptop?

A: The Audio-Technica Pro 35 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone requires a USB audio interface with XLR inputs for connection to a computer.

Q: 7. Does this microphone have GSM or cell phone interference? I have the AT803b, and I get interference from GSM cell phones near the microphone.

A: I haven't noticed cell interference, but it does have a ton of handling noise. Even the faintest fabric rustle is pretty noticeable.

Q: 8. Does this mic come with a base? I need to use it in the base that has a push to talk, push again to release setup.

A: It doesn't come with a base. I bought a Whirlwind Micmute PTD Push-to-Talk Switch to use as a base with momentary push to talk.

Q: 9. I play a Paraguayan harp (large folk harp). Is this mic good for more than brass instruments?

A: Certainl!. You may use this for harp and a variety of large stringed instruments.

Q: 10. Could this mic also be used as an overhead for an interview with good results?

A: Unlikely. It is not designed for that purpose. Dependant on distance and room acoustics; this mic is designed for close proximity, generally within inches of a musical instrument. That said, in a quiet room, with 1-2' of distance this mic MAY obtain good results for a single person.

The four mics that I purchased will be use with a sound system for a Gospel Group.
