The KMR 81 i MT Shotgun Microphone from Neumann uses a combination of a pressure gradient transducer and an interference tube. If the wavelength of the frequency is longer than the tube length, the microphone works as a pressure gradient transducer. At higher frequencies, it operates as an interference transducer for lateral sound. Off axis sound sources are picked up with reduced level, but without coloration. Therefore, the microphone is well suited to record individual instruments of an orchestra. The pickup areas of several shotgun microphones may even overlap as, for example, during recordings on a large stage, without causing any problem.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a better mic for capturing dialogue than the MKE600 ?

A: The NTG4+ and MKE 600 are comparable in terms of performance and audio quality. You should get similar results using either mic, so it's really a matter of personal preference.

Q: 2. I'm new to shotgun microphones and need some info. What are the scenarios(preferably with examples) where I'd need to absolutely use the battery power of NTG4+? My camera is Sony a7II and recorder would be Zoom H5. The shotgun will mostly be used in a boom setup but it'd be nice to use it on-camera sometimes. I understand that NTG4+ has both Phantom and battery power. Is there are reason to pick the NTG4+ over the NTG4, in my scenario? Is there any advantages/disadvantages of using battery power over phantom power or vice versa?

A: The only time you would require the battery power of the NTG4+ is if you did not have access to phantom power. Powering via phantom power is usually preferred by most as it is one less battery to worry about. Also, there may be some coloration to the tonal characteristics of the NTG4+ microphone as the battery depletes, where as the NTG4 is receiving constant power thru another source; in your case the Zoom H5. Keep in mind if you are powering the microphone with phantom power by way of the Zoom H5, the battery time usage on the recorder will be affected.

Q: 3. what are the case dimensions?

A: The microphone: 8.04 x 2.8 (201 x 70mm) LxD The case dimensions are not published but they are smaller than: (LxWxH) 16.0 x 14.0 x 6.5 Neumann has not provided the carrying case dimensions.

Q: 4. Does this music stand also install on the PC3K6 model?

A: Yes

Q: 5. When I have the microphone plugged into my H4n, I have to turn the audio in the H4n almost all the way up, which sounds terrible because of the white noise. I have to do the same thing when I have it plugged into my DSLR. Is there something I'm doing wrong here? People have been saying this mic sounds great, but I'm not getting that. It sounds like a $60 mic for me.

A: Hi Cody. Are you using 48v phantom power from your Zoom or are you using the built in battery of the mic? I would suggest NOT using the -10db pad on the mic to ensure you are sending out the best signal from the mic to your device. If you still cannot get a decent level please send us an enquiry at a href= http://rode.com/contact target= _blank rode.com/contact/a and we can help further.

Q: 6. Which is the best option between the 3? NTG2, NTG4 or Sennheiser MKE 600

A: Having owned the NTG2, NTG4+, and used the NTG3 quite a bit, I can tell you they are very different microphones. If you can afford the NTG3 it will give you the most sensitivity. Too much at times. The NTG2 is inexpensive and can hold a AA battery for phantom power, but has no off switch. This is why I purchased the NTG4+. The internal battery lasts a full day and can be turned off when not in use. I like Sennheiser, but have not owned a shotgun from them, so can not offer an honest opinion.

Q: 7. Does the microphone come with the SG2 mounting ring?

A: No, the Neumann SG2 Stand Mount does not fit the Neumann U 89 i Large-Diaphragm Multipattern Condenser Microphone. The microphone comes with a wooden storage box and the mounting accessories are available separately. The Neumann SG 289 Stand Mount for U 89 i Studio Microphone (B&H # NESG289) and the Neumann EA89I - Elastic Suspension Shock Mount for use with Neumann U89 Microphones - Nickel (B&H # NEEA89I) are the two options that Neumann offers for mounting the U 89 i Microphone.

Q: 8. 1) Can i connect NTG4+ to my rodelink filmmaker wireless transmitter?2) When connected directly to a sony a7r3 camera, will it sound good? or Preamp/external recorder is a must?

A: The 4+ supplies its own power, so if the rodelink receiver is plugged into the camera, plugging the mic directly into the camera will make absolutely no difference. The only benefit of using the transmitter would be to get the mic closer to the audio source. But that doesn't seem to apply here.

Q: 9. How do I get the audio on my computer

A: An adapter cable and an audio USB interface would be required: Neumann AC-20 5-Pin XLR Female to 2 3-Pin XLR Male Adapter Y-Cable - 3.3' B&H # NEAC20 Universal Audio Apollo Twin USB Desktop Interface with Realtime UAD Processing for Windows B&H # UNAPTWDUSB

Q: 10. Will this microphone work via AA battery and +48 if the internal battery has already died?

A: The NTG4+ does not operate on AA battery power. It features an internal rechargeable battery for power or can utilize phantom power.
