The Tokina 4 x 4" PRO IRND 1.8 Filter is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate filters that are 4" wide and 4mm thick. It is an ND filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. This filter's 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters are intended to not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide a high level of neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks when using this filter, one ACCU-ND Vapor Deposition layer is sandwiched between two layers of optical glass.

This Tokina 4 x 4" PRO IRND 1.8 Filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, and its sandwich design protects the ACCU-ND substrate while the glass surfaces can be re-polished should they become accidentally scratched.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the filter holder included?

A: No. Just the following is included. VFX Filter Alcantara leather bag

Q: 2. HI All Will this filter and the 8x nd viginate on the canon 10-22mm lens? thanks Rich

A: You may experience vignette when stacking this filter with another ND filter on a wide angle lens.

Q: 3. Is this a thin filter for use with a wide angle lens?

A: This is not classified as a thin filter.

Q: 4. one paragraph specifically says "This filter IS designed for direct solar viewing" then another paragraph says it is NOT ?

A: The Kolari Vision Pro IRND Filter (20-Stop, 77mm) does not allow direct solar viewing with your bare eyes/optical viewfinder. It allows for solar photography.

Q: 5. Why does the stock photo, depicting 'Without Filter' and'With Filter', show quite a corruption of the color with filter?

A: No idea, I bought one of these, and it seems to be neutral density. I notice that colors saturate more with long exposures, but the color are true.

Q: 6. This filter does not seem to be coated to reduce flares and ghosting. Has anybody had these issue flare up?

A: I purchased one of these filters about a year ago and have found it excellent my my uses. I haven't had any issues with ghosting /flaring. I think this shade of filter is ideal, I often use it in combination with a circular polariser also from B&W on a Canon 16-35mmf4L for seascapes in relatively bright light. If you are going to combine filters make sure to get some plastic filter wrenches as they can bind.together a bit

Q: 7. Does it use a dial to get darker or is it fixed?

A: This is not a variable nd filter, the denisty is fixed at 6 stops.

Q: 8. How many stops is this?

A: The Vaxis 95 IRND 2.1 filter has an optical density rating of 2.1, which equates to a 7-stop reduction in f-stop reduction.

Q: 9. Hi there , will this fit my 16-35mm lens ?

A: If your lens is Canon 16-35 mm f/2.8 then Yes, 82 mm is your filter size.

Q: 10. Does the Hoya MKII IRD have front threads in order to mount additional NDs ?

A: Yes, the Hoya HD MKII IR ND1000 Neutral Density Filter includes front filter threads so you can attach additional ND filters or a protective lens cap.

I bought this lens, thinking of saving money; I must confess that I am only a fan of photography. Although it is a lens for cameras with a full frame sensor, I mounted it on a Sony A 6000. I have been using it mostly in photography, and I liked the fast autofocus, the sharpness of the image and the beauty of the Bokeh effect. Perhaps a point to note is that it is a bit heavy, if one has in mind to use it with light cameras. I think that if one is not as demanding as a professional photographer, it is definitely a recommended lens.

I originally wrote a rather scathing two-star review of this lens because the copy I received was defective and pretty close to unusable autofocus wise. What I didn’t know at the point I had written the initial article was how amazing the Tokina support staff would be to work with.

On informing them of the issue I was having with AutoFocus, they immediately started trying to replicate the issue in their facility over in Japan. All this - in the height of the initial outbreak of coronavirus. They worked diligently and were able to quickly determine that the issue was with the copy of the lens I had received. They sent me a new copy free of charge that was personally checked to ensure it was in flawless operating order.

So when other people say why go with Tokina when there are very similar lenses for less my answer is do if for the support. Tokina genuinely seems to take pride in their products and they stand behind them 100%. That’s worth a lot.

And speaking of value, this lens offers an excellent value in terms of cost to performance ratio. It will give you 90% of the top end prime performance for 1/3 of the cost - creamy bokeh, sharp rendering across the frame, and build quality that rivals much more expensive optics.

The autofocus performance is exceptional and just falls of the fastest 85mm lens I’ve ever used. Eye autofocus works comparably well also.

In terms of overall rendering quality, this lens lends a neutral balanced classic look to the images it produces, making it an excellent choice for black and white photography and giving you a lot of headroom for working with color photos in post.

At the current price point you really can’t go wrong. And it’s great knowing you’ve got 3 years under warranty to back you up should you need it.

I have only taken this out once but the results so far have been beautiful. In context, I've owned the Canon 85mm 1.2 and the Canon 85mm 1.4 back in my dslr days and the Sigma DG DN 85mm 1.4 lens most recently. I shoot a lot of on location portraits and found the 85mm to be too tight on many of the locations I shoot. With that, I reluctantly traded in the Sigma on the Sony 50mm 1.2 lens. I didn't have the funds to keep both. (The Sigma is an amazing lens btw). After shooting the Sony 50mm (another great lens) I found I really missed the compression of the 85mm focal length when I did have the room, so I started looking around for a sleeper and I found it! Im still recovering from the price tag of the Sony 50mm so I was looking for something cheaper than the Sigma to have on hand for those occasions I wanted an 85mm. This Tokina fits the bill perfectly. It is a simple, no bells and whistles piece of glass that takes images comparable to any of the best lenses Ive used. The difference between 1.8 and 1.4 is negligible at best and this is built like a tank with its metal construction. I got it on sale for $399 and is a steal at this price. After shooting this I couldn't justify spending the money on the Sigma again which was one of my all time favorites. It is a very basic lens but the images are awesome even when shot wide open at 1.8.

Tokina is one of the best kept secrets in photography. They have a long history of designing lenses that are of high quality while being relatively affordable. The build quality is second to none on this particular 85mm. All metal with a focus ring that is an absolute joy to use (DMF mode on my Sony is awesome). Buttery smooth with nice resistance. Tightly put together, producing excellent sharpness and color. Auto focus is on par with native glass. The only downside is the lack of a rubber gasket around the mount and a flimsy lens hood that wobbles a bit. Otherwise, brilliant all around!
