The Dcode SB-4 from Denecke is a compact and lightweight (at 4 oz) syncbox which generates, reads, and jam syncs timecode at all standard frame rates. It features a large display with a backlight, that allows you to comfortably read your timecode and settings, even in sunlight.

The SB-4 is equipped with an advanced Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO) which offers ten times the frequency stability than that of the company's previous products, eliminating the need to jam more than once per day. The unit provides indication of drift/inaccuracy, a useful feature for troubleshooting bad timecode, and selectable output levels to easily match the sync input of other devices in your system.

The Dcode SB-4 is effortlessly controlled using a simple joystick/button, and runs on two AAA batteries or external power. It operates between 15 and 30 hours on a full charge.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What setting is used to output timecode to a Lectrosonics SPDR recorder?

A: To send timecode from the Denecke JB-1 Syncbox Timecode Generator, set the mode for Jam One (JO) and then set the Frame Rate as desired. Here is a link to the user manual: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/644705.pdf

Q: 2. Does this work with Sony FS5?

A: The Denecke Dcode SB-4 Syncbox Timecode Generator will not work with the Sony FS5.

Q: 3. What's the best cable to sync timecode with a Zoom F4?

A: This Ambient Recording 5-pin Lemo to BNC will work: https://bhpho.to/3gmJdTq

Q: 4. What cable do I need to jam time code into my RED DMSC2 with this device?

A: All you need is a quality SDI BNC to BNC cable. Here is one suggestion. Canare 1' L-3CFW RG59 HD-SDI Coaxial Cable with Male BNCs (Black) BH #CA35HSVB01 • MFR #CA35HSVB01

Q: 5. What's the highest FPS for this timecode generator? 30 FPS?

A: This unit offers frame rates of 23.97, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30fps.

Q: 6. Will this allow me to jam timecode if I am shooting on a URSA mini 4k (first edition) and recording audio to a Zoom H4N Pro (2020 edition)? any noticeable downfalls with this setup that you know of? Denecke said it would work with the URSA mini but didnt know about the Zoom H4N Pro

A: We are not aware of this working for that purpose.

Q: 7. How can I get a new battery cell of JB-1?

A: You will want to reach out to Denecke for assistance with this issue. Tel: 661-607-0206 Email info@denecke.com

Q: 8. Will this work with Convergent Design's Apollo to insert time code when ISO recording?

A: according to the manufacturers manual connect the JB-1 to LTC I/O port, as long as you are using that time-code port as the selected time-code source, the time-code that's generated by JB-1 will be read and show up on the Apollo.

Q: 9. What happens with the timecode when I am recording at 60fps?

A: From the manufacturer; 60fps is the Video Frame Rate. The TC frame rate will be half of that. So, 60 fps Video = 30 fps TC. Please note, that many times the video frame rate is referred to as '60' when it is actually '59.94'. In this case, the timecode rate is 29.97fps. I have a strong hunch that this is the case here. 30\60 is very rarely used theses days.

Q: 10. Will this work with a bmpcc 4k and a canon c70?

A: We would only recommend using the Deneke Dcode SB-4 Syncbox Timecode Generator with a camera that has dedicated timecode ports. The Canon C70 does feature a dedicated timecode port through it's BNC adapter and would be compatible with this Timecode Generator.

Well made, love the size compared to other slates like the TS3.

While I still do prefer the TS-3 for more space to write information....this slate is great for compatibility and MUCH easier one-hand slating as sometimes I don't always get an A2 or have an AC to slate. This slate is still great because you do have enough room to write what you need, but if you do prefer the TS-3 for more space then that's a great choice too.

Denecke came through with this little guy.

I've been waiting for a small, durable, bnc locking, tc reading, long battery lasting, usb charging, auto frame-rate syncing tc sync unit for a while now.

And here it is...

If you know TC then you know Deneke. If you need the best gear then you need Deneke. This little thing holds TC and hides anywhere on the camera. With Camera's getting smaller and less places for velcro, the size of this Syncbox make's a big difference.

Side note, if you need to cross jam, this unit has the ability to cross-jam. Other TC syncboxes have dropped this functionality. Very useful for once in a blue moon.

As a production sound mixer, I've been using Denecke syncboxes for over 10 years. I have two of their SB-3s and bought one of these JB-1s a few years back after hearing insistent comments from camera dept about how great Tentacles' size are. :)
I now have finally switched completely over to 2 JB-1s. The build quality and form factor is incredible. I'd expect nothing less from a trusted/long established company like Denecke.
I had debated between these and the Tentacles. I heard mostly great things about them but also the 1/8in jack and plastic connector made it appear more like a prosumer device for one-man-band/DSLR type productions. No doubt they are still great devices, but as a sound mixer, I would consider the JB-1 a step above with the BNC connector and onboard display screen. It just feels really well made and super simple to use. No regrets and no more disgruntled camera dept when I hand them one of these to mount on camera!

Deneke makes solid gear. If you want something you don't have to think about this is your TC unit. The menu is simple and straight forward. The size is incredibly small. You can hide this unit under cameras with Velcro. Did I mention I was blown away by how long the battery lasts.
