In black, the GKJr. Katana Pro Aluminum Gimbal Head with Side Mount Clamp from ProMediaGear is designed with the traveling sports or nature photographer in mind. Its anodized aluminum frame is hollowed out to make it lightweight. It weighs only 1.8 lb and supports up to 50 lb of gear.

In this variation of the Katana Pro, the cradle clamp has been replaced with a side-mounting Arca-type clamp and 6" quick release plate for long telephoto lenses. This configuration still enables full lens tilting but without the swinging arc of the cradle arm.

The Katana Pro offers fluid movement on both the 360° panning axis and the floating tilt axis. Both axes may also be locked separately via large aluminum control knobs which are easy to grip even when wearing gloves.

With the expectation that the user will likely subject the Katana Pro to the rigors of the great outdoors, the head has been designed extra durable to ensure maintenance-free operation. The hard-anodized aluminum coating makes the entire frame scratch- and nick-resistant, while preventing the likelihood of creating reflections that might alert wildlife to your presence. Additionally, the head's fluid joints use sealed ball bearing cases which make them considerably less susceptible to corrosion or malfunction due to moisture, dirt, and debris. The Katana Pro is designed and constructed in the USA.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What does this gimbal head weight? not the package weight but the gimbal head itself.

A: ProMediaGear Katana Professional Gimbal Tripod Head weights 5.4 lb / 2.4 kg.

Q: 2. Does it include the arca swiss adapter plate?

A: No, this does not come with an adapter plate.

Q: 3. How does this do for pointing your camera and lens straight up overhead, most gimbal heads have restricted motion for straight up shots. In astronomy jargon this position is called zenith. Thanks.

A: The only lens I use on this head is my 500f4 and it can't shoot straight up.

Q: 4. Does this head still come with the PX-6 plate, although it is discontinued? Are 1/4 or 3/8 screws included?

A: The ProMediaGear GKJr Katana Pro Aluminum Gimbal Head comes with the PX6 plate and 2 1/4-20 screws.

Q: 5. I recently read a review which said the head wobbled/vibrated. Has anyone else experience this problem? Are there any issues about this head that haven't surface yet on the internet? Thanks.

A: I recently noticed some wobble when set up with a pro camera, 500mm f4 and 2x teleconverter. I thought the problem might be with the plate clamp, so I switched it out with a Wimberley plate clamp. That helped.

Q: 6. Use a Nikon camera 80-400 lens and a battery pack do i need a larger plate do u have to buy it separate ?

A: The GKJr Katana Jr. Gimbal comes complete with the ProMediaGear PX6 6 inch long lens balancing plate. It should be a good plate for your lens. If you feel you need additional length we also manufacture an 8 inch model, PX8.

Q: 7. Does this head comes with the quick release plate?

A: The Katana and Katana Jr. Gimbal Series come with a free PX6 or PX7 balancing plate included in the box. ($3540 value). This would include the Jr. w/o cradle.

Q: 8. Is the Promediagear GKjr. arca clamp compatible with kirk lens plates?

A: The GKJr. Gimbal cradle clamp is Arca Compatible. Kirk lens plates are too. Should be good to go!

Q: 9. can I shoot portrait position as well as landscape with this head?

A: Yes and No... If you are using a lens with a lens foot, typically the lens collar allows you to rotate around the lens, then YES. You would be able to quickly roll the camera over from landscape to portrait. However, if you are using a shorter lens or a lens that doesn't feature a rotation lens collar, then NO. If no, ProMediaGear manufactures the PXC2 Lens Plate that will clamp onto your Arca Compatible tripod plate mounted on to the camera body rather than the lens. To rotate to portraits with this configuration you would require an L-bracket.

Q: 10. Can this head be used on a skimmer ground pod?

A: Yes this head can be used with the Naturescapes SKM-II Skimmer Ground Pod II.

After losing hundred of dollars on cheap and some not so cheap gimbal heads and never being happy I found the PMG katana JR it is IMO by for the best gimbal i have own out there!! I have used it in all kinds of conditions from - 48 in Yellowstone with no freezing up to the hot salty climate here on south Texas beaches and never a problem!!!! The only time I had a problem was on a trip to Yellowstone for the elk run. TSA dropped my Katana JR and broke off one of the knobs locking it up. Once i opened up my gearbox and saw my gimbal broke in two pieces I figured my trip was going to be a ruff one. Being I was shoot a 1DXMKll with a 600F4ISll a pretty heavy rig. So I called up PMG and spoke with Tom one of the owners. I told him my problem and he ask if i had any tools to work on it which I didn't. Tom said he would go over night the part and the tools I needed to fix my gimbal and he would personally drive them down to the shipping company so that he knew everything would get to me. Well the next day everything showed up the parts and tools that I needed to fix my gimbal saving my trip!!!!!! Not many companies were you can call up with a problem, have the owner answer and then have him go out of his way to make sure you are taken care of even when the problem wasn't his fault. But Tom at Promediagear did just that and saved my trip!!!!!!!!!

"This is not my first gimbal". Please allow me to say this is my last. I have tried almost all other gimbals on the market. None can even compare in anyway to this high end gimbal.
If you try this product you will also understand completely.
Thank you, Pro Media gear for engineering this product. Excellent.

This mates a Canon EF 500mm f/4L II to a monopod, for birding. It replaced an Induro GHB1 that I used for more than five years, until the smoothness of the tilt function deteriorated. Sealed ball bearings in the GKJr. should fix that forever. Couldn't be more pleased by the fit, finish, and feel of this mechanism.

This is the only gimbal head I own, but I have compared it to a friend's Wimberly which seems to be the top gimbal out there. Here are my observations:

1. It is well built with a very nice finish & quality feel.
2. Operation is super smooth and it pivots and pans effortlessly. Better than the Wimberly IMO.
3. The knobs allow a good range of adjustment to dial in the perfect amount of tension to allow movement in any direction while holding your camera in position if you let go. More range of tension adjustment than the Wimberly IMO.
4. Price is much lower then Wimberly (even if opting for the more expensive version with the full bird swing.
5. Weighs almost a full pound less than the Wimberly.
6. Slightly smaller due to angular design vs. the curved design of the Wimberly.
7. When you tighten either tension knob for a lockdown shot, it changes your framing a bit. So you have to try and move it to compensate while tightening. This could be annoying and the only drawback to this head that I see. The Wimberly does not do this.

So the only negative I see is when doing a lockdown shot. It isn't a big deal to me since the whole point of a head like this is to have freedom to move quickly. Most people use a head like this for action such as sports or wildlife in which case you wouldn't usually tighten it down. And when you dial in the right tension, it stays put even when not locked down. But it could be an issue if shooting in windy conditions or if getting perfect, precise framing is needed.

Another note - I opted for this cheaper version without the full bird swing. I like that it pivots right on the central axis of my setup vs swinging towards or away from me. Just a personal preference.

I had my reservations about the side mount, but I love it! Movement feels so much more fluid when tracking wildlife. I definitely recommend this brand and model to anyone looking for an optimal gimbal.

I was using a ball mount for my D850 with Sigma 150-600, but never again. This GKJr. Katana Pro is much better. It's steady. It's smooth up and down. It's smooth left and right. It locks the camera and lens securely. I love it!
