This 85 x 85mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 13-stop reduction in exposure. This 3.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 3.3 x 3.3" / 85 x 85mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 3.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 13 stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have hard stops?

A: No.

Q: 2. Does it fit the Cokin P series holder?

A: Yes the Cokin P-series holder fits 84 mm and 85 mm filters.

Q: 3. Is this intended for solar shooting?

A: The Haida 77mm NanoPro One Million X Edition Filter is a 20 stop filter and any filter over 16 stops is safe for solar use.

Q: 4. Will this filter produce an image with yellow sun or white color cast sun?

A: The Hoya ProND-100000 Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Filter (82mm, 16.6-Stop) will produce a yellow/color cast not white of the Sun. One of the safest filters does produce white color. And that is, https://bhpho.to/3Q9J3n6.

Q: 5. What size filter will fit a Leica Ultravid 12x50 HD binoculars? Thanks.

A: The Leica Ultravid 12x50 HD do not have a standardized filter thread.

Q: 6. Would this filter be good for shooting the moon and planets? Cut down the moons brightness and glare.

A: The Haida 77mm NanoPro One Million X Edition ND Filter (20 Stop) is a solar filter and it would be too dark for lunar use. A 2 stop filter is recommended for lunar photos: https://bhpho.to/48R3cVJ

Q: 7. So is this filter ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified?

A: Yes it is: https://hoyafilter.com/product/prond100000/

Q: 8. Is this filter safe for solar eclipse photography?

A: Haida 95mm NanoPro One Million X Edition ND Filter (20 Stop) BH #HAHD460795 is not rated for solar photography no.

Q: 9. Will you need to remove this filter during the total eclipse to see & photograph anything?

A: Yes, solar filters are designed for shooting the entire sun and partial eclipse phases. You will need to remove the filter during totality to photograph the corona. If you also want to photograph Bailey's beads and the diamond ring effect, you will want to remove the filter about 20-30 seconds before totality begins and replace it about 20-30 seconds after totality ends. This will not damage your camera equipment. Another answer implied that it is safe to view the eclipse through your camera's optical viewfinder with this filter in place, but that is NOT the case. This filter is NOT certified for visual observation. Place a viewfinder cover or a piece of tape over your optical viewfinder as a precaution, and only use live view to focus and compose your frames.

Q: 10. Is this filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: This is the only information Hoya is publishing: https://hoyafilter.com/product/prond100000/#description

I don’t use solar filters often except during the days of eclipses so the only thing I can say is this filter did its job and there’s nothing more I could need from it. Will come in handy for the next three eclipses of this decade.
