Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. an this be mounted on the 12-100mm 72filter threads? Would a step down/up ring be needed?

A: The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash is designed for use with macro lenses; specifically, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30 f/3.5 Macro Lens, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens, and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens, and comes with the 46mm Ring Adapter and the 62mm Ring Adapter. It is not designed for use on the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO Lens, which uses the larger 72mm filter thread size. If you choose, you may purchase the Sensei 72-62mm Step-Down Ring, B&H # SESDR7262, along with the 62mm adapter to connect the flash to your lens, but you may experience vignetting when using this setup on your lens.

Q: 2. With this be a good lighting system to uses on a copystand to digitize old photos / drawing / paintings?

A: The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash is really for macro shots—to be used with a macro lens. If you use this on a copy stand to photograph flat art, you'd need to position the lights further away. Otherwise, you would get glare on the photos.

Q: 3. I have the OM-D E-M5 MII and I can't get STF-8 to fire during focus bracketing. Is it not compatible or am I missing a setting?

A: You have to change another setting to get it to flash. I had the same problem until I found the answer in the manual. It still took some effort because the manual was not that clear.Under Menu select 2 Advance Camera Shooting Options , Anti-Shock/Silent , Silent Mode Setting , Flash Mode , Allow .It took me a long time to figure this one out. Be sure to set your flash time long enough for the flash to recharge.Good Luck...Doug

Q: 4. Is this compatible with Lumix GH5?

A: Yes, with any 4/3 lens with a 46mm filter thread

Q: 5. How does it attach to the lens ????

A: screws into the lens like a filter. 46mm and 62mm adapter rings included. If your lens takes a different size, then you will step-up rings.

Q: 6. Does this come with diffusers , if not, where can you buy them ????

A: It comes with two diffusers. Unfortunately you're going to need more diffusion. They're like the ubiquitous Sto-Fen diffusers, if you find that adequate fine, but for softer lighting you'll need some kind of DIY solution to put between the flash heads and the subject.

Q: 7. New to flash here. What is the maximum possible camera to subject distance for adequate illumination?

A: Twin flashes are not made for covering great distances. They are mainly made for macro photography, extreme close ups of things such as flowers, bugs, and bugs on flowers. As a rough estimate the Olympus STF-8 Twin flash should be fine in a range up to 8-10 feet at the most. If you are looking for more in a distance range up to 40-50 feet, the Olympus FL-900R would be a better option. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/2h05lsh

Q: 8. Can the flash heads be removed from the mounting ring for more lighting choices?

A: The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash Heads are fixed to the cables connected to the pack but it does have cold-shoe mounts, so that allows you to extend the height of the flash as well as to distance it further away from the subject for better light diffusion.

Q: 9. Has anybody been able to get this thing to work on a Pen-F? I tried setting via Menu2 to Silent Mode Setting - allow Flash Mode, and still this thing does not work.

A: The flash would not work on Silent Mode Setting

Q: 10. Is it possible to buy extra diffusers for the Olympus STF-8 flash?

A: Unfortunately, no, it is not. I contacted Olympus America and they state that the diffusers included in the Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash are not available as a separate replacement accessory.

This is a professional quality flash with VERY consistent, repeatable output. The light is bright and even. I use the included diffuser almost all the time, and the reflector adapter works very well also for that extra little bit of fill needed when bouncing the main head. I have used the flash both on camera and as a remote unit without any glitches.

I have struggled with using regular lights of all kinds for macro photography. The first pictures I took with the STF-8 demonstrated why I needed this product. Results were outstanding. The design is well executed. The size of the components are a bit of a challenge for someone with large (old) hands. The included case is just right to protect and organize the components. I believe this will be a very popular component for Olympus macro shooters.

This twin flash is just what I needed to go with my 30 and 60mm Olympus Macro lenses with my Olympus EM 1 Mark 11. After reading the instructions, I attached it to my Olympus, set the flash and took some macro of a few thing. The photos were amazing !!!! Details were perfect !!!! No one could ask for a better combination that Olympus has provided than this, for Macro Photography. Jim, Charlotte, NC.

I am so glad I purchased this as soon as it came available, and whether coupled with my 60mm macro or 50-200mm+25mm ext tube I am getting great well lit images first time out. The lighting permutations are extensive offering various ratios between the heads or manual outputs down to 1/125th. The clip on diffusers do a good job of softening the light and improving coverage at 1:1 magification. It comes in a well made case and Rings to fit the 60mm which I own plus the 12-40 & 40-150mm Pro lenses that I don't but with the purchase of an inexpensive step down ring it also fits my 50-200mm+25mm ext tube with no sign of vignetting.

Originally, I purchased the Metz 44 AF-1 Flash to complement my purchase of the Olympus OM-D EM10 and OM-D EM1. While the flash was adequate, it has nothing to compare to the Olympus FL-50R Flash. I am extremely pleased with this flash. Not only does it have more functions, but also allows control on the flash unit itself and not just through the camera. I like a window with information as to the status of the flash, use of f-stops, and the ability to modify its power and fill capability. The Metz does not allow for this. It is worth the extra money to buy the Olympus. You will not be disappointed with the power. Also, it comes with a stofen like bounce diffuser. I bought the Stofen...but it is unnecessary. The unit does not contain a pull out white card like some flashes. Olympus gives you an add on white plastic reflector which attaches in many different positions...this is more versitale than the pull out card. There is a pull out wide angle attachment which covers the flash head and allows ample coverage when using wide angle lenses. The construction is good. I think one person commented that they had trouble with the battery compartment opening and closing. I have not found this to be true. It is substantial...however, I have not found this weight issue to be cumbersome. I am using it on an Olympus OM-D EM1 with a battery grip. The balance is great. Consider purchasing rechargeable batteries if you do not already use them. I have found the recycle time to be better

Using the twin flash with the 60mm macro lens in the field even with a bit of air movement of subject allows for tack sharp images. TTL feature, manual focus and being able to fine tune flash power ratio and location between the two flashes allows for more pleasing images by limiting contrast and shadows. Need more time and practice but works flawlessly so far.

I took a big gulp at the price, but bought this flash because I love close up photography, and have found lighting to be challenging. I really love the many combinations of flash you can set for these 2 units, and the results are fantastic! They are a bit fiddly for bigger or arthritic hands, but once you get them set up, they are easy to use.

Great results paired with everything from wide angle to telephoto lenses. RC mode easy to set up and worked like a charm as fill when using the inboard flash. Easier to carry compared to my Sunpak 522, and TTL mode means you can concentrate on the shot, not on the dials.

As a unit the flash is excellent. With the addition of the off camera bracket and cord it offers much more flexibility. Great item!
