The Kodak 100 x 100mm #38A Blue Filter is a solid-colored contrast filter primarily designed to absorb red light, as well as some UV and green light as well. It is particularly adept at increasing contrast for visual microscopy systems.

Wratten 2 filters are constructed from gelatin for ease of use and consistent performance. When compared to original Wratten filters, Wratten 2 filters are more rigid and durable, easier to handle, and less sensitive to humidity, static cling, and fingerprints.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If proper care is taken, I'm just curious as to the longevity/ quality of these filters? Will they last more than 6 months? Many years?

A: In our experience the main danger to longevity is water or solvent damage. The other issue would be if they become scratched. In a good clean environment I would expect you to get several years use.

Q: 2. Can these be cut to fit the rear gel filter holder of a 14mm lens?

A: Yes the Wratten filters can be cut and used in most rear filter mounted lenses.

Q: 3. I imagine this is just a piece of plastic. Do you suggest a way that I can mount it so that I can carry it in my pocket while photographing?

A: Gel filters such as this one are made out of gelatin and are not rigid like plastic. I would not advise carrying this type of filter in your pocket, as they scratch quite easily.

Q: 4. Is this filter just loose Wratten or does it have a cardboard frame or something to make it more rigid in the filter holder?

A: The Kodak 4x4" (100mm) 85N9 Color Conversion Wratten 2 Optical Gel Filter does not come with a cardboard frame to make it more rigid in the holder. The filter will work fine without additional framing.

Q: 5. Does this work with the Sony 14mm 1.8?

A: The Kodak 3 x 3" Neutral Density (ND) #96 2.0 Optical Gelatin Wratten 2 Filter can be cut to fit in the rear gel filter holder on the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM Lens.

Q: 6. How thin are these? Looking to use them for the rear filter holder of my Tamron 15-30mm 2.6 g2 for Canon

A: These are .1mm thick.

Q: 7. Thin enough to fit in the rear filter holder of the Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 G2 for Canon?

A: Yes.

Q: 8. Would this fit a Cokin Z series filter holder?

A: While this filter is the same width as the filters used in the Cokin Z holder, it would have a very loose fit since they are thinner.

Q: 9. Is this the same as the Kase 100mm Starglow? I ask because Kase Filters doesn't have an AstroBlast listed on their website.

A: No, these filters are different.

Q: 10. Hi - are these made of plastic or glass ? Thanks.

A: The Kodak 4 x 4" 85C Wratten 2 Optical Filter is made from a gelatin material.

Good filter but too expensive!

I am using this in the rear filter slot of a 10.5mm Nikor fisheye lens to help reduce shutter speed for various immersive VR panoramic landscape photography projects. With no way to mount filters on the front of such a lens, this is the only way to go if you want, for instance, to get a longer exposure on flowing water in full daylight.

This is exactly what you would expect... a thin, gelatin filter that is extremely fragile. I wouldn't recommend any gelatin filter if it is going to be exposed to the elements... too fragile. Wratten filters are engineered with very high qc standards and are recognized as such by the fact that many scientific laboratories utilize Wratten filters for their optical equipment. If you have a need for a filter that passes or restricts specific frequencies, I would suggest purchasing a Kodak filter guidebook so you know exactly which filters will satisfy your needs, and then buying the corresponding Wratten filter. If you don't have such exacting needs, you may be better off going with a filter system such as Cokin, where they will be slightly more durable.

I'm using this to reduce purple fringing with the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 lens on the Olympus E-M5. I cut a small bit of the filter and adhered it over the rear element with double-sided tape. I've been using this solution since early May without any problems. It virtually eliminates purple fringing often seen in the image corners with this body-lens combination.

I just want to say thanks for a great service. I use this filter on an 11-24mm zoom lens. It has a filter holder at the rear of the lens where I slide in the gelatin ND. It allows me to do long exposures which blurs people and other moving objects. Being gelatin it is delicate and tricky to handle but I knew that before I purchased it.

Using it with the Canon zoom 11-24mm f4.0

The price is a little steep, but it's tough to beat the light weight of this ND gel, which is optically good enough to use in front of a camera lens. I use mine with my Phantom 3, which doesn't stress the gimbal, which is finely tuned to the weight of the camera. Most ND filters weigh at least 10 grams, and that will throw a gimbal out of whack over time. I was able to cut 4 filters from the size provided, so go in on these with your Phantom-flying friends to bring the cost down.

The Wratten 90 viewing filter helps you visualize what a scene will render as black and white. Treat it gently, but use it to take your creative visualization to a new level.
