Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this device to get stereo audio output from my Panasonic TV HDMI output? I have no other way to hook the audio from my TV to my stereo system. I've tried optical DACs that say they will work but they don't.

A: The HDMI jack on the TV is very likely an input, not an output. It is intended to connect FROM a cable box, DVD player etc. TO your TV and not the other way around. Your television probably has analog audio out jacks (red and white), an optical digital output and maybe a coax digital output (orange). Your owners manual will identify the input and output jacks and they should be labeled HDMI 1 in or audio out or similar wording. The red/white should almost certainly connect your TV to the amp or better, connect one of the cable box outputs to the amp.

Q: 2. I'm disappointed with the scrunched aspect ratio when I plug my Apple TV 3 into my 36 Sony Standard definition CRT, through my eBay-cheap HDMI to RCA Analog Converter. My Sony has the Apple TV image scrunched vertically, with faces and people displaying narrow. I cant live with that? I have have gone to Settings/Audio & Video/TV Resolution and none of the settings will get rid of the scrunched screen, not even 640 x 480 - 60hz. Would this KanexPro adapter display the image from my Apple TV 3 on my old Analog 4:3 Sony CRT TV undistorted in 4x3 format?

A: Apple TVs output an HD, 16x9 signal through their HDMI output. This KanexPro will not work for you, nor am I aware of any product that will turn that to a 4x3 format without it looking squished.

Q: 3. Anyone use this on the newer samsungs with the stupid junction box? Every other converter I've tried wont work with it so I'd rather know before wasting time and money.

A: So that we may best assist you finding the proper product for your needs feel free to email us directly at askbh@bhphoto.com.

Q: 4. Would this work with a projector I'm using it for Apple TV and cable box

A: If the projector has a composite video input, then I believe that it would.I used this device to connect an Apple TV to an older TV that does not have an HDMI input.

Q: 5. I want to take the RCA output of my cameras and pass it through this unit to have upscaled HDMI output. I am trying to extend the useful life of my cameras - which are otherwise excellent! The other issue is I still need to record the video to something. Do you have any suggestions for this type of setup? Thank you!

A: I use it for a similar set up and it works fine.I use a stand alone dvr.

Q: 6. Is the composite output aspect ratio 4x3 or 16x9?

A: The output aspect ratio is 4x3, and is a standard NTSC analog 640 horizontal by 480 vertical lines (interlaced), which can be displayed by any device with a composite (yellow RCA connector) input. The Kanex will accept an HDMI 480, 720, or 1080 vertical line input and downscale it to 480 lines. However, the output image you see depends on the format of the HDMI input and the formatting capabilities of composite display. Formatting refers to the ability to crop, fill, or distort the display. Since a 16x9 format will not directly fit a 4x3 display, one of these 3 options must be used: Cropping removes left and right side portions of the image to fill the display. Distortion squeezes in the sides of the image to fill the display. Filling adds black bars at the top and bottom of the image (Letterbox mode) to fill the display. The Kanex does no cropping or distortion; with a standard 16x9 HDMI input signal, it displays in Letterbox mode. None of the image is cropped or distorted, but instead filled to fit the 640x480 (4x3) format. In my situation, I pull 16x9 video from a PC, edit on an old composite 4x3 DVR, and display on an old 4x3 CRT. Output quality is good with very good color. I do notice some brightness and contrast shifts from the source, which need touching up on the display unit or color corrector if you have one.Hope this helps!

Q: 7. what is the frame rate of this converter for hdmi out ? does it gives 50i ?

A: Do not buy, poor resolution.

Q: 8. I am looking for cable or a device to convert from VHS video signal to high resolution digital video signal. From Q&A, it looks can convert composite RCA signal to HDMI. Which software do I need to capture the signal from HDMI? Does this work with Windows 10? Thanks.

A: Well, I can answer your first question. This device produce a very nice picture on 720X30 and 1080X60. Both, on an regular HDMI TV or an HDMI monitor. However, I purposely bought this converter for my 4KX2KX18X720 capable Ninja Flame professional monitor, but having major issues. Non of the resolutions are usable. The screen is running (like it would be PAL) with both, 1080 and the 720.The 4k resolution is just weird, out of focus and shaky. So For my Ninja, this converter is not working at this moment. Sorry, how to record it with a PC, I wouldn't know. My plan was to record it with an HDMI recorder.

Q: 9. What is the part number for a replacement 5v power supply?

A: The power supply is not sold separately. If you wish one, we have been asked by KanexPro to say if you want one, please contact KanexPro directly. Support@kanexpro.com

Q: 10. has anyone powered this unit with USB power instead of plugging it into the wall? Does it need to be plugged into the wall?

A: Hi Mark. The unit requires a 5 volt DC source at 2 amps. Any power supply of 5 volts DC with at least a 2 amp rating will power the unit. So, if you have a USB power supply of 5 volts that can supply the amp rating it should work. Please be aware of the polarity of the power supply you are using. And no, I have not tried powering the unit from a USB port or power supply, but it is a good question.
