Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it mirror without RAID?

A: No it would require RAID 1 for mirroring purposes.

Q: 2. I can’t seem to find a FireWire host connection. .??

A: The OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive has 2 Firewire ports on the back of the drive.

Q: 3. Can I connect my camcorder to transfer videos directly to this enclosure? My camcorder has a 1394 port.

A: If the camcorder is compatible with external drives, then yes, you will be able to connect the OWC 20TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive via the 1394B Firewire 800 port.

Q: 4. how do I format to work on my p c?

A: The drive comes preformatted for FAT32, which is a Windows file system. There is no need to reformat the drive for compatibility.

Q: 5. Can these be stacked, or is heat an issue?

A: The vents on the OWC 8TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive are located on the sides, and not the top of the drive, so you could potentially stack them, but dues to the shape of the drive and the nature of rotating HDDs, I would not advise it.

Q: 6. After connecting with USB-B can you daisy chain a FireWire 800 drive?

A: A FireWire signal cannot be sent over a USB connection, so to make use of the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive's FireWire daisy-chaining feature would require a FireWire host connection as well.

Q: 7. Can I put ssd drives in this enclosure instead of spinning drives?

A: Yes. I have one 7200 RPM and in slot 1 and SSD in slot 2

Q: 8. Does this device support RAID 1 for two HDs with different capacities? Specifically, will it support a Western Digital 5TB WD50EZRZ and a 6TB WD60PURZ in a 5TB RAID 1 configuration?

A: Technically it will work, but you will only get the lesser of two capacities. In this case, you would lose 1TB. This is the same with any RAID device, unless specifically stated otherwise with a unique software RAID such as "beyond RAID".

Q: 9. will this work with Thunderbolt/USB4?

A: The enclosure BH #OWTB3DKP2D • MFR #OWCTB3DKP2D can be used with Thunderbolt/USB-4 but will be limited to its Thunderbolt 3 speeds.

Q: 10. Can I connect this drive to a network switch for local access using the ethernet port on this unit?

A: The OWC Gemini Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Dual-Drive RAID Enclosure is not a NAS it is only for one computer access via USB. The Ethernet port allows the connected computer to have a wired Ethernet connection.

This enclosure is made of thick aluminum for years of use. I was surprised at how well everything fit together, and how perfect my 5.25 Blu-Ray drive fit in it. it even has rubber grommets to isolate the drive from the case and rubberized feet for quiet operation. The feet also don't slip on my desk. I plan on getting another one soon for another drive and stacking them. Most things these days aren't this high level of quality and sturdiness of build.

Simply put, this case is a Heavy Aluminum case that puts all other cases to shame. Very easy to install the Drive. In the days of Computer Cases goin Bayless, an external case will be the only way!

I got it to preserve the use of a 5.25 drive in a new PC case with no optical drive slot. (The drive has old firmware, that allows playing of UHD BluRay disks.)

I found the USB cable that came with it to be a bit short (24, 60cm). If you get a replacement, be sure to get the high bandwidth A/B type.

Solid, metal build, relatively easy to put together, no struggles.

Has rubber parts to help with vibration and all parts are snug but not difficult to work with.

After hours of use it goes from noticeably cool to lukewarm.

Bought a case that included the now rare ability to install a CDROM drive. Something I need to feed the constant expansion of my digital music collection. Except that the water cooler filled that space, so an external case became a necessity.

The OWC Mercury Pro Enclosure was the solution. I have several copies of a Plantronics drive that is capable of accurate rips. It fits in the OWC enclosure, though there was some weirdness during the installation getting the drive bezel to mate with the enclosure bezel. Once installed everything worked well.

Love that I can pull the drive off the shelf, connect the USB cable, and rip a new set of CDs. This is exactly what I envisioned, so am happy it worked out as expected!

The drive enclosure is great for DVD drives less than 7 inches. I would higly recomend it to anyone needing a high quality DVD drive enclosure.

You wouldn't call this thing cheap, but you'd be glad you bought it. It's a masterpiece, really beautifully made. And I had trouble with some software I was using and the OCW customer service was absolutely excellent in fixing it.
