The BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp from Really Right Stuff is a 23.6 oz mid-sized ball head that will support camera-lens combinations weighing up to 18 lb. Crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, the BH-40 has all of the features you'd expect from a professional-level head. An over-sized, ergonomic locking T-knob allows 45-degree tilting in all directions and a 90-degree drop-notch facilitates quick and accurate switching from the horizontal landscape position to vertical portrait orientation. A separate tension knob is provided to apply the appropriate pressure that safely corresponds to the weight of your camera. A third knob loosens and locks the panning base which is laser-engraved with markers every 2.5 degrees from 0 to 360 degrees. This version of the head has a special panning quick release with a bubble level and 360 degree markers that make it ideal for panoramas.

    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. For the BH-40 with Full lever panning clamp, is it the new R-mount version from RRS?

A: No, the Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp does not have the R mount. R-Mount Interface: R-Mount’s rosette will prevent twisting at the coupling point between the ARC-LR and RRS head over time, and will assist in eliminating “play” that results from regular use on our earlier tongue-and-groove designs. It is not out yet as of today on the B&H system. And is only in a clamp and not yet on the heads.

Q: 2. Can the BH-55 mount on the TVC-24L versa tripod with TA-2-QC column? Do I need a TA-3-PF to make it work?

A: You can mount this head to the TVC-24L without any other accessory needed.

Q: 3. Is this a good head for birds and wildlife photography?

A: This is one of the best ball heads on the market. This would work well for any application. However, for birds and wildlife you may want to consider a gimbal head, especially if you're using long telephoto lenses. I would speak with our chat team, or give us a call if you need more information.

Q: 4. Why do you need the panning clamp if the base of the ballhead already pans?

A: If your base isnt level, use the ball head to level your shot. Boom, level panning.

Q: 5. I already own the RRS B2-LR II panning clamp. Could I just buy the BH-55 head without clamp and use my own panning clamp?

A: Yes, you can. Click on the link below to view the head without clamp; https://bhpho.to/2ZaGqqL

Q: 6. I’m picking up a Sony a7riv and plan to get a Weebill S for it. I want one quick release plate for both this item and the Weebill. Which plate do I get?

A: Any plate that is Arca Swiss compatible will work. You can go with a RRS plate or any other brand. Click on the link below to view your options; https://bhpho.to/3aUDYbK

Q: 7. Is a Kirk L-bracket (for Nikon D810) compatible with the BH-55 Lever Release Ball Head? RRS states only the screw knob clamp is compatible.

    A: Yes it is.

Q: 8. Does the lever-release interfere with the panning clamp knob? Do you have to open the lever to tighten down the panning clamp knob? It is hard to tell in the picture, they look close together.

    A: There is no interference.

Q: 9. Hi, Im using Nikon z9 + Nikon 800mm f/6.3. is the panning option will work well for videos? or it will to hard to pan gently?

A: The Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp doesn't have panning fluid and counter balance so it is hard to pan gently during video. I would recommend a fluid head for panning during video such as this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1470943-REG

Q: 10. So without the model that has the Lever-Release Panning Clamp I cannot pan the camera...?? I see similar markings at the bottom of the ball head that I presumed was for panning too. Can someone please clear this up for me...??

A: The bottom portion will pan 360 degrees when the knob is loosened. The pan head on top of the ball joint allows you to level the camera independent of how the tripod is positioned, before panning. it is designed for panning the camera through a panorama sequence, and makes leveling the camera very easy.

I previously owned the BH-55 ball head but replaced with the BH-40 because its lighter and more than adequate for my gear. Ive owned several other brands in the past, and keep coming back to RRS because I find their quality to be among the best. This version of the BH-40 ball head includes a panning clamp. Be aware that this clamp only allows horizontal panning from a level plane. If you need to pan with the camera and lens tilted, youll still need a leveling base.

Extremely well built. The panning base is fantastic. The lever mechanism is probably the quickest was to release and attach a camera and is easy to operate even with gloves in a cold weather. Originally I thought there was a design flaw in the main knob that seemed to have limited movement when the base was right above it because it would hit it. Later I found that you can pull it out and reposition it for further tightening which is great. For now I can't find anything I don't like about the product, except for the hefty price, and would highly recommend it.

It's very well built. The lever makes for very quick setup and release. The panning base lets for very easy setup for panoramas. The only annoying part is that the handle cannot be turned all the way when the base is in the upright position because it hits the base. But it is still tight enough so it's not a big deal.

Beautifully well-made and an absolute pleasure to use. Hard to imagine ever buying another ball head. Hefty and solid while also feeling like a precision instrument. Worth the price.
