The PG-01 Compact Pano-Gimbal Head from Really Right Stuff is an ultra-portable, lightweight tripod head offered in numerous configurations depending on the needs of the user. This version includes a screw-knob Arca-type quick release clamp and an integrated leveling base with Arca-type dovetail compatibility.

Designed as both a panoramic and gimbal head, the PG-01 is recommended for users wishing to capture single or multi-row panoramas with non-collared lenses. It can also be used as a small gimbal support for cameras with medium telephoto lenses, or in layman's terms, lenses no larger than a traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. With a load capacity of 8 lb, Really Right Stuff suggests using this head exclusively for mirrorless cameras or small DSLR's—users with larger gear should consider similar heads with higher weight capacities.

The PG-01's design consists of two arms that control the rotation and swing of the cameras position. The base arm is connected directly to the integrated base rotator, which features a laser-engraved 360° scale for accurate positioning when capturing single or multi-row panoramas. The vertical arm, which mounts to the base arm via an Arca-type clamp, may be positioned with the assistance of a laser-engraved millimeter scale. The vertical arm also features an adjustable rotator with engraved 360° markings and a screw-knob equipped Arca-type clamp for mounting and dismounting your camera, extension plate, or nodal slide.

This version of the PG-01 also includes an integrated leveling base built into the horizontal rotator. The inclusion of the base eliminates the need for users to purchase a separate leveling device or use with PG-01 with an additional ball head. The base is controlled by a precision-machined knob that provides the user with maximum locking power for a stable grip. Accurate leveling is achieved with the assistance of a built-in bubble level, which has been placed at the far-end of the horizontal arm.

Additional technical features include a 3/8"-16 tripod mounting thread, an Arca-type dovetail integrated into the base rotator, a lightweight construction of just 1.1 lb, and an included 5/32 hex key with magnetic storage slot.

Q: 4. I've been using a Gigapan Epic Pro with a Canon 5D iii and 300mm f4 L lens. Would this PG-01 work with my camera/lens setup?

A: No, the Really Right Stuff PG-01 Compact Pano-Gimbal Head with Lever-Release Clamp and Leveling Base can not support the Canon 5d Mark III with a Canon 300mm f/4 L lens. The lens is too long and heavy.

Q: 5. If it is mounted on a ball head, is the leveling base still needed ? Can we just use the ball head to level since this bracket has a bubble level ?

A: Yes, it does have an Arca mount point - but the PG-01 base is 'gimbaled' at that point with a great tightening knob, allowing easy, accurate leveling of the base. Without the bubble on the end it would be hard to get it perfectly level. If you are going to go to the trouble of using a pano bracket, you might as well get one which is a pleasure to use. Otherwise, just mount your camera on your ballhead and fire away.

A: As it comes (just the panoramic gimbal), it will fit the R5 + EF/RF adapter + 8-15mm but not fulfill your needs. You'll want to have a least a nodal slide (to correct parallax and find your nodal point) and L-bracket in addition to this item.

Q: 9. Does this have indexing dentents for rotation and tilt? Can it be locked in position on both axis?

Easy to set up and fits well in a camera bag. The leveling feature is really nice. Be cautious to not loosen the screws too much as it will start to wobble a little.

If you're doing multi-row landscape panos with DSLR/mirrorless, normal focal lengths, and no objects in the near field, this is all you need. PS Photomerge is sophisticated enough to blend images perfectly. (Not true, however, if you're doing architectural or product photography you'll need to add the accessory for nodal adjustments.)

Recently started exploring the genre of stitched panoramic photography. I researched a bunch of options and for the money this checked all of the boxes in one package. Other multiple piece options were only slightly less money and not nearly as refined. This supports the Canon EOS R and Sigma 105 f/1.4 fairly well but this is the max I would load it with.

RRS produces excellent quality products. The PG-01 is no exception. It functions well and is easy to utilize. Setting the nodal point on the lens is very simple. Highly recommend.
