Daystar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter For Nikon F (chromosphere)
- Product Code: ga39097
-
Building on the success of the standard versions of their Quark, Daystar Filters designed this version of the Camera Quark H-Alpha Solar Filter to fit Nikon F camera bodies and lenses to allow imaging or viewing chromosphere details. To fit your camera system, the each end is equipped with a corresponding bayonet mount for easy attachment, and full disk viewing possible on lenses up to ~450mm focal length. A rear 1.25" eyepiece adapter is included to allow the use of traditional astronomical eyepieces. This adapter essentially converts your lens into a solar telescope. Daystar recommends the use of red, orange or yellow colored glass lens front filters for apertures over 80mm.
The filter is tuned to the 0.5-0.3Å bandwidth of the 656nm hydrogen-alpha wavelength with the ability to tune it ±0.5Å from the center line for compensate for Doppler shift or to focus on specific regions or features, with indicators every 0.1Å. The chromosphere's surface structure behaves differently in active regions than quiet areas, where magnetic field lines are stronger, so viewing this portion of the sun provides a constantly-changing observational experience. The filter is powered via a micro-USB port, and Daystar includes a power cord and an AC adapter to meet the high-power requirements of 5 VDC 1.5A. To enable its use at home and abroad, a set of international outlet plugs is provided with adapters for the US, UK, EU, and Australia.
The Camera Quark comes with a combination lens foot with 1/4-20 tripod holes to mount it on conventional photo/video/field tripods, and a Vixen-style dovetail plate for telescope mounts. While a focal extender spacer ring is included to ensure compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, focus and clearances are not guaranteed with all Nikon F lenses. Because there is no electric pass-through on the filter, when installed between the camera body and lens, some lens features such as auto-focus and electronic aperture control will not work.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. would this filter fit on a Sony SEL1670Z 16-70mm f/4?
A: I agree with Nathan, the 65-89mm filter would be too big unless you wrapped something around the lens first. The Day Star 50mm sounds perfect for your lens. The B&H site is now showing the larger filter as discontinued at this time anyway.
Q: 2. Is this compatible with Nikon z or Nikon F ?
A: The DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-Alpha Solar Filter for Nikon (Prominence) will work with Nikon F mount lenses,
Q: 3. DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter for Canon (Prominence): Does this provide product adequate filtration of the sun for the upcoming eclipse, or does it need to be used in consort with additional filters on camera/scope for viewing?
A: The DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter for Canon (Prominence) goes between your lens and camera. You still need a ERF (energy reflecting filter) on the front of your lens. This will prevent damage to the lens. For help choosing a ERF (energy reflecting filter) for your lens email us at sportoptics@bandh.com.
Q: 4. I Have An F7 102mm Triplet Refractor From Explore Scientific, If I Purchase This HA Solar Filter What Else Would I Need To Purchase
A: The DayStar Filters QUARK H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter inserts into 1.25" or 2" diagonals and accepts 1.25" eyepieces. I recommend using UV/IR cut filters. Follow this link https://bit.ly/3UpqtKg if you are using a diagonal, or https://bit.ly/494r2gU if you are not. The following energy rejection filter is also recommended for optical tube assemblies over 80mm. https://bit.ly/3vYBecc
Q: 5. So if you're going to use it on a Canon R6 you'd need two adaptors?
A: All you would need is the Vivitar T-Mount to Canon RF-Mount Adapter. Link to Item: https://bhpho.to/2R13gQg
Q: 6. I have the Celestron Eclipsmart 8" Solar Filter for my 8" SCT. Is it enough or I still need to buy an Energy Reduction filter?
A: In solar viewing, solar filters are for viewing the photosphere of the sun. The H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter is for viewing the chromosphere of the sun.
Q: 7. Looking at the video, there does not appear to be any filter in front on the front element on the telephoto lense. Wouldn't you have to have a solar filter in front to keep from damaging the internal components of the telephoto lens? Should you use a Mylar solar sheet like I normally use for telephoto sun pictures.
A: You are right,it is called ERF(energy reflecting filter). I have ordered one with my Ha filter Aug 3 but has not arrived. So haven't been able to used the Ha filter.
Q: 8. What is the difference between a tuned for prominences and a chromosphere filter? Is there one of them that does both better? How do I choose?
A: No, two different condition. The chromosphere is the sun's surface. The prominence is viewing sun flairs around the perimeter of the sun. .
Q: 9. will this work with an ED80T CF Triplet telescope?
A: Just got mine last week and got great views on my old SV AT1010 80mm f6 achro. Just saw black at first then, per the instructions, turned the tuning dial 2 clicks clockwise. In a few minutes i was seeing great chromo and proms as well. I got the front mount uv/ir blocker as i will be using it on a larger scope as well. You won't get a full disc view though because the focal length is greater than 450
Q: 10. I have a 24-120 mm using a 77 mm filter. The lens hood diameter is 110 mm. Should I use the lens hood during the eclipse?
A: It is a matter of opinion but I would recommend using the hood always. Even if the sun is directly in the frame and the hood cannot stop the flares, the hood still provides safety protection in case the camera is dropped. Since the Daystar filter is not large enough for the hood, this screw on ND filter can be used for solar protection instead: https://bhpho.to/2m7h8oX
