Daystar Filters Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter For Canon Ef (prominence)
- Product Code: ga39100

Building on the success of the standard versions of their Quark, Daystar Filters designed this version of the Camera Quark H-Alpha Solar Filter to fit Canon EF camera bodies and lenses to allow imaging or viewing prominences. To fit your camera system, the each end is equipped with a corresponding bayonet mount for easy attachment, and full disk viewing possible on lenses up to ~450mm focal length. A rear 1.25" eyepiece adapter is included to allow the use of traditional astronomical eyepieces. This adapter essentially converts your lens into a solar telescope. Daystar recommends the use of red, orange or yellow colored glass lens front filters for apertures over 80mm.
The filter is tuned to the 0.8-0.6Å bandwidth of the 656nm hydrogen-alpha wavelength with the ability to tune it ±0.5Å from the center line for compensate for Doppler shift or to focus on specific regions or features, with indicators every 0.1Å. Prominences, a detail of the chromosphere projected against the blackness of space behind the sun, are seen with improved contrast due to the filter's narrower bandpass versus a wider bandpass filter tuned for conventional chromosphere surface viewing. The filter is powered via a micro-USB port, and Daystar includes a power cord and an AC adapter to meet the high-power requirements of 5 VDC 1.5A. To enable its use at home and abroad, a set of international outlet plugs is provided with adapters for the US, UK, EU, and Australia.
The Camera Quark comes with a combination lens foot with 1/4-20 tripod holes to mount it on conventional photo/video/field tripods, and a Vixen-style dovetail plate for telescope mounts. While a focal extender spacer ring is included to ensure compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, focus and clearances are not guaranteed with all Canon EF lenses. Because there is no electric pass-through on the filter, when installed between the camera body and lens, some lens features such as auto-focus and electronic aperture control will not work.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Are these left over from 2017? That's the date on the product photo.
A: The DayStar Filters 70mm White-Light Universal Lens Solar Filter (Single, 65-89mm OD), that B&H offers are not left overs at all.
Q: 2. What do I need to use this with my Canon 5D M4?
A: This is to fit Canon SLR and DLSR bodies. You do not need anything extra for a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
Q: 3. Looking at the video, there does not appear to be any filter in front on the front element on the telephoto lense. Wouldn't you have to have a solar filter in front to keep from damaging the internal components of the telephoto lens? Should you use a Mylar solar sheet like I normally use for telephoto sun pictures.
A: You are right,it is called ERF(energy reflecting filter). I have ordered one with my Ha filter Aug 3 but has not arrived. So haven't been able to used the Ha filter.
Q: 4. What size should I get for a Nikon 18-200 lens? The current screw-on filter says 72mm.
A: The 65-80 MM works perfectly on my Nikon with a 72mm lens cap. Since the camera will be pointing UP, it can't just fall off. As to folding the tabs, it doesn't matter which one you start with, just fold down the little tab on the left side first (looking at the word side). The little tab will be at a 45 degree angle, Makes it easier to get the big tab located on the adjacent right side into the notch, then fold the little tab back up to hold the right tab in place.During an eclipse, you want the filter to slip off/on super easy!
Q: 5. I have the Celestron Eclipsmart 8" Solar Filter for my 8" SCT. Is it enough or I still need to buy an Energy Reduction filter?
A: In solar viewing, solar filters are for viewing the photosphere of the sun. The H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter is for viewing the chromosphere of the sun.
Q: 6. What is the difference between a tuned for prominences and a chromosphere filter? Is there one of them that does both better? How do I choose?
A: No, two different condition. The chromosphere is the sun's surface. The prominence is viewing sun flairs around the perimeter of the sun. .
Q: 7. I only have a viewfinder on my Nikon D3300. I assume I need to have my solar Glasses on as well as the camera solar filter?
A: Once the filter is secure you can look through the viewfinder. If you wear your glasses and have the filter you won't be able to see anything through it anyway.
Q: 8. Is this compatible with Nikon z or Nikon F ?
A: The DayStar Filters Camera Quark H-Alpha Solar Filter for Nikon (Prominence) will work with Nikon F mount lenses,
Q: 9. I have a Apertura 75Q petzval design with internal lenses and flattener technology. will this Daystar DSZ4C be compatible?
A: The DayStar Filters QUARK H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter (Chromosphere)will fit in any telescope that accepts 1.25 inch eyepiece. It works best with refractor telescopes that are between f4 and f8.
Q: 10. Will this work on an Orion Astroview 120ST (600mm, f/5)? If so, will I need any additional adapters or extension tubes (for focusing)? Thank you.
A: The DayStar Filters QUARK H-Alpha Eyepiece Solar Filter (Prominence) BH #DADSZ4P • MFR #DSZ4P simply inserts into 1.25" or 2" diagonals and accepts 1.25" eyepieces. This design enables the use of nighttime telescopes for solar viewing. In addition to the tunable H-alpha filter, the Quark also functions as a 4.3x Barlow lens, with a 2-element lens system designed to be telecentric which flattens the field of view and reduces parallax, and optical coatings that are optimized for the 656nm H-alpha wavelength.
