Musicians, producers, and sound designers in need of a high-quality nearfield monitor will be impressed with the Focal Professional Shape 65, a compact, nearfield 6.5" active 2-way studio monitor that's ideal for use in home, project, or mobile studios. The sealed MDF cabinet houses a 6.5" flax sandwich cone woofer and an aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter that combine to provide a frequency response of 40 Hz to 35 kHz with a maximum SPL of 109 dB, while two 6.5" passive radiators help extend the low frequencies and minimize distortion. The midrange / low-frequency driver is powered by a Class-AB 80W amplifier, while the high-frequency driver utilizes a Class-AB 25W amplifier. The sealed enclosure allows the monitor to be placed near a boundary or wall with no adverse effects.

The monitor features XLR and RCA input connectors, making it easy to connect to a variety of sound systems and devices. It also offers a variety of controls including an adjustable mid-frequency control, as well as high- and low-frequency shelf controls, plus a variable high-pass filter (Full Range / 45 / 60 / 90 Hz), which allow you to customize the speaker's acoustic response to match your environment. The Shape 65 can be mounted to the ceiling or a wall via the optional fastening accessories package and ships with a standard IEC power cord.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can these speakers be run directly off of a PC? If so, how do you connect them as the pictures show connections I have not used before.

A: The CMS 50 is a professional studio monitoring speaker and thus has connections typically found only in professional equipment. To integrate it with a computer, which would normally feature a 3.5mm stereo output, you would need a special cable (KOSMYCM2XM03) along with two extension cables (KOM4003, KOM4006) possibly 3-6 feet; your choice. But to maximize performance, I would advise you to invest in nice USB audio converter like the RME ADI-2 Pro, as it will heighten your listening experience by providing a pristine audio signal not available in standard run of the mill computer audio cards.

Q: 2. Because this active monitor has DSP technology, will there be a delay from the signal going in to the sound coming out?

A: The SC204 is designed to process audio with undetectable latency.

Q: 3. Which Genelec model is suitable for studios of size 50X23X13(Ft)?

A: That would really depend on your listening area. 8030's with a sub work work for one to two people in the listening area. 8050's would offer an 8'' woofer with better separation in the sonic field B&H # GE8050BPM. 1032c's would be great as well with a 10'' woofer and offer SAM technology BH #GE1032CPM.

Q: 4. Are these monitors shielded?

A: No, the Genelec 8030C 5" 2-Way 100W Active Studio Monitors are not shielded. The Genelec models that have an "M" at the end of the manufacturer's item code (MFR#) are magnetically shielded.

Q: 5. Cables needed to connect to a Focusrite solo

A: That will depend on which generation of Scarlett Solo you have. Assuming you have a pair of the Rokit 5 G4's, if your Solo is 2nd Generation will need two rca to xlr male cables like these B&H # COCRMXM6. If your Solo is the newer 3rd generation, then you will need two trs to xlr male cables like these B&H # PEPMTRSXM06.

Q: 6. Are these monitors eligable for educational pricing (K-12 school; I am already registered with B&H as an educator)

A: For school district purchases, please contact us at biddept@a href= http://bhphoto.com target= _blank bhphoto.com./a

Q: 7. The price is for two monitors?

A: Genelecs are always priced singly; multiply the price by two if you want a pair. If you've never heard Genelec monitors, then you probably will think they're overpriced. But if you have discerning ears, and you do an A-B comparison between any Genelec and any other monitor of equivalent size, you will immediately hear the difference...and it's not subtle; it's not merely obvious, it's startling. Put another way, if you CAN'T hear the difference, you don't need to be spending money on Genelecs. Buy something cheaper. But if you want the best audio monitors in the world, nothing else even comes close.

Q: 8. Does it come with the speaker grates?

A: Sorry, grates are not included.

Q: 9. What is the differnce between the 8030C and the G Three?

A: Internally, the Genelec 8030C 5" 2-Way 100W Active Studio Monitor (Single, Raw) and the Genelec G Three are identical. The two models differ in their input connector types and rear controls: - 8030C only has an XLR input, while the G Three has RCA and XLR inputs - 8030C uses a trim pot to adjust volume, while the G Three only uses dip switches - Bass and treble EQ controls vary slightly between the two - G Three has a dip switch to turn off the LED light on the front, while the 8030C does not

Q: 10. Ok, silly question...where to I connect my red and black speaker wire from my pre-amp?

A: There is an RCA input connection on the back of each of these speakers for an unbalanced audio signal. If you have speaker cables, which carry audio as well as power, then you would require passive speakers; such as two of the Alesis Elevate 6 Passive - 6 Desktop Studio Monitor, (B&H # ALELEVATE6PA.)

I have been using a pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors in my home studio for the last 20+ years, but to get decent frequency response I needed to use a 15 band graphic EQ and a Rane frequency analyzer... comes with a reference mic and a pink noise generator -- you try to adjust the EQ while watching the LEDs bounce up and down and adjust each band until the frequency response looks flat. I always had to tweak the EQ setting (maybe defeating the purpose) to make them sound more natural. Then I decided to upgrade my monitors. I went to the B&H store in NYC and listened to half a dozen, including Genelec, Yamaha, and others. I finally bought the Focal Alpha 65 EVO, which sounded the richest and yet were half the price of the Genelec 5. Bringing them home, they sounded much better with no EQ than the Reveals did with no EQ, but not as good as the EQ'd Reveals. I wanted to make sure I wasn't coloring the sound. So I bought the Sonarworks Reference 4 item. Well, it worked great. It comes with a very sturdy-looking reference mic. It was fairly easy to set up, it acquired sound points from about 36 spots in my listening area, and it took me about an hour to create a detailed frequency response curve. It has an application (and a plug in) that automatically corrects your computer's monitor sound output to flatten the speaker response. It seems to work great! The Focal monitors were fairly flat except for a peak at around 150 Hz, which the Sonarworks flattened, without having to resort to a graphic EQ. Unfortunately there's quite a bit of falloff below 100 Hz that I can measured, so beware... you will need a subwoofer with these monitors if you want to mix music. However, for general audio projects they would be a great addition to any studio.
