Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, this lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and affords consistent performance throughout the entire zoom range.

One XLD (extra-low dispersion) and five LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.

Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.

A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 3.1' away.

A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates. Due to this unique design, this lens is only compatible with select Nikon F-mount cameras that support an electromagnetic diaphragm, including the D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D300, D300s, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D3x, D4, D4S, Df, D500, and D5 DSLRs.

Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Q: 10. What's the difference between the G2 and the earlier version? Is the G2 worth the extra money?

A: Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I haven't had time to shoot with the G2 until today. Used it at my son's baseball game and then a birthday party. Fantastic lens. Had the version 1 for about a week and just didn't like it. The G2 is metal construction rather than plastic. It focuses fast. Maybe not as fast as the Canon 70-200 L that I was borrowing but fast enough. And super sharp! I was borrowing the 70-200 version 1 from a friend and this thing blows it out of the water. The canon version 2 may be much better than the v1 but I've never shot the v2 on the canon. I think the upgrades are completely worth putting into the G2. So glad I got it.

After using my 1st generation 70-200mm f/2.8(A009) for about 5 yrs, I had the chance to use the new 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 lens. The new lens in my opinion is faster and the VC works better than the 1st lens. Along with the lens I also bought the 2X teleconverter. I must say that it works perfectly with this new lens. Auto focus works flawlessly. I am very happy with my purchase of this Tamron lens.
I am not a professional photographer but I really enjoy photography and you can't go wrong with new lens.

I've had this lens for a little over 2 months now. I do concert photography and needed a longer lens for getting the drummers who are always the hardest to get good shots of. I rented the first 70-200 about a year ago and it was good except pics would be soft at the high end of the zoom. When the new G2 came out and I read the reviews, I purchased one. So happy I did! I found the pics through the zoom range low to high to be sharp and the focus was fast and spot on! I shot one show with this lens only and was very happy with the pictures! And the price is makes it well worth the expense! I use this on my Nikon D750.

I have the older 80-200 2.8d Nikkor lens but was unhappy with the softness wide open and lack of VR. I procrastinated purchasing the Tamron 70-200 G2 because there were a few reviews complaining about sharpness. Well Im glad I took the leap as this lens is tack sharp wide open at 200mm even with a shutter speed of 1/80! So glad I purchased this lens, I now will be selling my older Nikkor!

I found this lens sharp right out of the box on my Nikon D810. I bought the lens as part of a package that included the Tamron Tap-in module thinking I would need it since this is a 3rd party lens. Turns out it doesn't need any adjustments at any focal length or aperture. The pictures attached are wide open at 2.8 right out of the camera - no post processing. Yes, there is some vignetting around the edges but this can be corrected in post very easily. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone in the market for a 70-200 - 2.8 lens. While I do not have the Nikon version, I can't imagine the Nikon could do any better than the Tamron but given the cost differential, the Tamron is a winner for me.

I mostly shoot landscapes and macro, but like most photographers, I do a bit of everything. I needed a fast 70-200, and was mostly concerned with the performance of this lens at 200mm and at f/2.8. I did a TON of research before purchasing this lens. The bottom line is that the Tamron gave me the best combination of performance and value, at least on paper. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but it has performed flawlessly. The first test was a few portraits at 200mm and at f/2.8. I took the same portraits with my beloved Nikon 85mm f/1.8, which is wicked sharp. Those images served as my control photos. The Tamron was every bit as sharp as my Nikon, and the out of focus areas in the background gave me no complaints either. The next test was fast focusing on a moving object (my dog). As she raced back toward me while playing fetch, I kept my finger on the shutter (Nikon D7200, Continuous High, D9), while doing my best to keep the AF sensor on her head. I took 167 images, and 154 were tack sharp. That's about a 92% keeper rate. I'm more than happy with that. I've included a photo (high-res jpeg) but don't know what B&H's processing engine will do to it or how large you'll be able to view it, but it's wicked sharp on my screen. Regarding build quality, the lens feels very solid. It's heavy, but about what you'd expect for a 70-200 f/2.8, and is on par with all the others. What I particularly like is its close-focusing ability, which beats all the rest of the contenders. It's weather sealed and comes with a 6 year warranty, which is unmatched by either Canon or Nikon. As I said, I've only had this lens for a few weeks, but so far I couldn't be happier with it. I'd highly recommend it.
