This 10-stop, 55mm NiSi PRO Nano IRND Filter is an ND filter with a 1000x filter factor that provides a 10-stop exposure reduction. Its 3.0 optical density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters are intended to not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide a high level of neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks when using the NiSi 55mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter, one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating is applied to each of this filter's surfaces. The Nano coating associated with this filter also results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.

This NiSi 55mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, and features a brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention.

Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters.

Each surface includes one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating that attenuates infrared light as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure times.

Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water or oil for more efficient cleaning.

Constructed from optical glass for clarity.

Brass filter ring helps to prevent vignetting, jamming, and provides additional strength.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. when the 6-9 ND comes out, can it be COMBINED with the 1-5 (=14)? with threads or friction: will i need 86mm to put with 82 1-5?

A: No, you can not combine the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (82mm) with another variable nd filter.

Q: 2. Does the 67mm size cause vignetting when used with the Sony SEL20F18G lens?

A: No, the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (67mm) will not cause a vignette on lenses, like the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens (B&H # SO2018G).

Q: 3. can this be used with the tilta mirage matte box?

A: Round screw on filters like the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter are supported by the Tilta Marage Matte-Box when using the correct ring attachment. The following ring will support 82mm screw on filters. However, a much better choice is the Tilta VND which is made for the Mirage Matte-box. Tilta Adapter Ring for Tilta Mirage Matte Box (82mm) BH #TIMBT1682 Tilta Mirage VND Kit BH #TIMBT16A If you own the Mirage Matte-box now get this: Tilta 95mm Variable ND Filter for Mirage Matte Box BH #TIMBT16VND

Q: 4. will this allow me to use my lens hood (canon RF 28-70 F2.0) ?

A: Yes, one can use the hood from the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM Lens with the NiSi 95mm True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter. You would need to remove the rotating lever from the filter, as that would get in the way,

Q: 5. What is the thread size of the rotating lever?

A: The NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (82mm) rear threads are 82mm, and the front threads, where the rotating lever is, are 86mm.

Q: 6. I regard to the question about the front threads:Note that the specs supplied by B&H say that the mfg has not provided that info. Upon receiving this filter hoping I could add the the Nikon R1C1 flash system to it (the reason I bought this unit instead of others that had no front threads) I can tell you that the threads are well over 77MM wide. I should have figured that out when the description states the filter is oversized.

A: The front threads are approximately 81mm on the XS-Pro 77mm Digital ND Vario. While it will not be possible to use the R1-C1 mounted on this filter, the flashes on the R1-C1 separate off the ring and the system comes with stands. You could mount the flashes onto stands and ultimately a tripod and light the subject in this manner, and just use the system without having the flash on the camera.

Q: 7. Hi, i wold like yo know if this model it's compatible with the Sony PZ28-135 mm?

A: Yes, the NiSi True Color ND-VARIO Pro Nano 1 to 5-Stop Variable ND Filter (95mm) is compatible with the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens.

Q: 8. Can anyone explain the dot markings to stops on this filter?

A: I had this same question and decided to run some tests (using my Nikon D810). I did this inside with the lighting (more or less) constant. I ran three sets of tests: 1) in manual mode with auto ISO, I noted the ISO without the filter and with the filter positioned at each of the ten different dot makings; 2) In manual mode (and constant ISO) I set the aperture to zero out the meter without the filter and at each of the dot markings; and 3) In aperture priority mode, I noted the shutter speed without the filter and at each of the dot markings. The results varied somewhat depending on the test. Reported below is the average of the three methods. The first dot corresponded to 1.0 stops, second dot to 1.1 stops, third dot to 1.4 stops, fourth dot to 1.8 stops, fifth dot to 2.2 stops, sixth dot to 2.5 stops, seventh dot to 2.8 stops, eighth dot to 3.2 stops, ninth dot to 3.7 stops, and tenth dot to 4.1 stops. So, as others have said, the dots are just a guide.

Q: 9. Does this filter have front threads so I can attach it to a matte box or an additional filter? Thanks!

A: Yes it does have a front thread of 77mm.

Q: 10. Can the hard stop be removable?

A: According to the manufacturer, the hard stops on the NiSi 82mm True Color ND-Vario Pro Nano 1-5 Stops Variable ND Filter cannot be removed. If the variable neutral density filter had no hard stops, cross-type X-banding patterns would occur in your images.

Since I live in Texas and there will be 2 solar eclipses in the coming year, I decided to get a solar filter. This NISI might be a bit pricey but it is absolutely fantastic. This is made to take pictures of the sun and it works great. I was totally impressed once I got the exposure correct (or at least close). I'll be doing some more test exposures soon. If you are looking for a solar filter, I'd definitely take a close look at this one.

Wasn't sure I could pull this off for the first of two rare solar eclipses visible in Oklahoma in 2023 and 2024. I used this 95mm filter with a Sigma 150-600 mm lens on an EOS 70D (22 MPix on APS-C sensor) giving an effective 960 mm at the big end. These 2023 photos tell the story. The sunspot was a surprise and shows some detail in the second crop.

Worked great. Was even able to get sunspots to show up during the eclipse. Would Def recomend.

This was my first experience photographing an eclipse. We only had 65% coverage, but it was still very cool. I used this lens on a Sony RX10 Mark IV mounted on a tripod, lens fully extended to 600 mm, and using a remote shutter control. The settings I preferred were ISO 80, Aperture f8 (sometimes higher), and shutter speed 1/320. I could clearly see multiple sun spots and was very pleased with the overall results. Looking forward to using it again in April 2024 when I will be in the path of totality.
