A: The difference is the amount of ink in the cartridge. Canon estimates that when printing a standard A4 document you will get about 298 pages with CLI-251 M and about 660 pages with CLI-251 M XL.

I don't use the printer very often, but I leave it turned on all the time. While it is on, it does perform self maintenance to keep the print heads clean. This uses most of the ink over time. But it does print well when I do need to print documents or pictures... 5
