This 16.6-stop, 82mm ProND-100000 ND Solar Filter from Hoya provides a 16.6-stop exposure reduction, and its 5.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image with a 0.001% transmittance that is effective for solar and solar eclipse photography. With this filter, users can capture photographs with a wider aperture or a slower shutter speed than normally required. The filter material provides an accurate neutral color rendition without any noticeable colorcast to the images, and its vapor-deposition application to the glass lens ensures an even and consistent layer. An aluminum-alloy filter ring holds the filter for durability while remaining lightweight.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this ND filter ideal for video use? I plan on using it with a Sony FDR-AX33 4K camera.

A: Actually the newest ND filter by Hoya (the SOLAS filter series) would be more suited for video work:https://a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1285182-REG/hoya_xsl_46irnd09_46mm_solas_0_9_irnd.html target= _blank www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1285182-REG/hoya_xsl_46irnd09_46mm_solas_0_9_irnd.html/a

Q: 2. Will you need to remove this filter during the total eclipse to see & photograph anything?

A: Yes, solar filters are designed for shooting the entire sun and partial eclipse phases. You will need to remove the filter during totality to photograph the corona. If you also want to photograph Bailey's beads and the diamond ring effect, you will want to remove the filter about 20-30 seconds before totality begins and replace it about 20-30 seconds after totality ends. This will not damage your camera equipment. Another answer implied that it is safe to view the eclipse through your camera's optical viewfinder with this filter in place, but that is NOT the case. This filter is NOT certified for visual observation. Place a viewfinder cover or a piece of tape over your optical viewfinder as a precaution, and only use live view to focus and compose your frames.

Q: 3. Is this one of the Hoya HMC filters with box stating "Do not use any chemical cleaners for cleaning only a soft cotton cloth allowed"?

A: I looked at the box and I don't see that message written on it.

Q: 4. Is this filter made in Japan?

A: As per our records, the Hoya ProND EX 1000 Filter (82mm, 10-Stop) is currently made in Japan. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 5. Can you stack this lens with a Hoya 55 mm UV filter?

A: Yes, the Hoya ProND EX 64 Filter (55mm, 6-Stop) has front and back 55mm threads so it can be stacked.

Q: 6. Is This Filter Really A 62mm Filter? Why In The Photo It Says 77mm?

A: Yes, Hoya ProND EX 1000 Filter (62mm, 10-Stop) is 62mm not 77mm.

Q: 7. Do these filter IR?

A: Hoya ProND EX 3-Filter Kit (77mm) does not filter IR.

Q: 8. Hi, pls specify the make. Is it Japanese?

A: Currently it is made in Japan. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 9. Can one place the 77 mm Hoya CPD-77ND100000 ND filter over a 77mm Hoya UV filter, and in so doing protect the sensor further from UV? There may be slight vignetting, but if shooting an eclipse that will not matter.

A: Yes you could do this. That way you protect the Sensor more. That shouldn't be an issue. You just might have a slight Vignette.

Q: 10. What size filter will fit a Leica Ultravid 12x50 HD binoculars? Thanks.

A: The Leica Ultravid 12x50 HD do not have a standardized filter thread.

Not much else to say... I've used this filter twice for the two recent eclipses in Texas (2023 and 2024) and worked just fine.

Excellent filter. Does everything as promised and then you need to do the work to get the right image, as expected. No issues looking through viewfinder - sun is the only thing visible, just protect your other eye! With so many stops in reduced light, can be difficult to adjust to light cloud cover, but filter does very well.

This filter worked perfectly and allowed me to capture the 2024 solar eclipse with a timelapse. I took a photo every minute and 15 seconds to capture all of the phases. I used it on a 70-200mm with a 2x teleconverter. The images are neutral/white in color but I bumped the white balance in post to make the sun appear orange.

Fabulous tool to have in the arsenal. And as always, the more sophisticated the tool the more sophisticated your execution must be.
You need the correct aperture in bright sunlight to eliminate filter artifacts caused by the physics of ND filters. In the shade or overcast days you will find a wider window of operation. If you shoot sloppy you will get sloppy results. However if you love attention to detail and are patient this filter is an awful lot of fun.

Great to photograph the sun

What's not to like? I mean, if you want to take shots directly into the sun without burning out your chip (or your eye, if you use a DSLR) then this is the only option going.

As you can see from the photo, it does the job - that was taken with the Fuji 150-600 plus 2X TC for a focal length of 1200MM at f16, and since the Fuji is a DX camera that's essentially equivalent to an 1800MM lens on an FX chip. So, figure about a 36 power telescope. And the cropping (other than making it square) was minimal. The point is, having taken a few dozen shots (as the clouds were moving along each was a bit different) there was no ill effect to the sensor in the camera.

I got this for the solar eclipse earlier this year, and at that time it was unreturnable. I suppose that is because some people try to use this just that one day and try to return it. In any case, I figured that I would get my money's worth out of it and have been using it to take photos of sunspots and very very bright light sources. I can now take detailed macros of LED emitters, lightbulbs, and things like that. This works very well, and I got a bunch of step up rings so that I could use it on all my other lenses.

I purchased this filter and step-up ring for the solar eclipse. Both worked perfected! I hope view more amazing scenes in the future with my Canon thanks to this filter.

Perfect solar lens filter for my Canon. I will be using this for photos of the sun and later the annular and total eclipse.
