The black pair of CR21 Small-Diaphragm Condenser Instrument Microphones from MXL feature 22mm gold-sputtered diaphragms and a cardioid pickup pattern. These pencil condensers can be used to capture audio in several environments—recording studios, rehearsals spaces, and more. They are suitable for recording drums (overheads), acoustic instruments, and pianos.

In tight situations they deliver a sound that is clean, articulate, and full. The microphones are built to pick up every detail of your performance, and each features a transformerless preamp, which makes for low noise and distortion. The fast transient response of the capsule provides extra accuracy. In addition, a pair of hard-mount mic stand adapters and a microfiber cleaning cloth are included.

Q: 1. how to switch on /off switches as fingure tips can’t reach them

A: Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the switches. I suggest looking into a rubber thimble used for turning pages, as those can help increase friction and move the switches to the desired positions.

Q: 2. Is this mike usable as on-camera microphone?

A: No it is not usable on-camera. You would hear every bump and noise. For video you would use a stable boom mic stand. Also if you are using this where there is a breeze you would need a wind cover.

Q: 3. Will the matched pair still be a matched pair if I replace it with two NT45-O omnidirectional capsules?

A: If you replace one of the RODE NT5 Cardioid Studio Condenser Microphones in a matched pair, it should be very close, but may not be identical to the other mic.

Q: 4. Based on the description showing stage use , we bought two of these and put them on the edge of our stage facing the audience in the hopes of a decent ambient pick-up. They are picking up way too much from the rear and the manual actually says that they are either super cardiois or hyper cardioid which would not have as much rear rejection as a plain cardioid. Am I misunderstanding something or can you please advise us on a more appropriate selection? We are a church with a fair amount of stage volume and need these primarily for in-ear ambiance and the results were practically no vocals and little audience with mostly stage music from drums and guitar amps.Thank you

A: There are adapters in the box. One has holes to skew the response curve to voice. There is another to reject background sound. I think it comes with it installed. Did you check your db settings? It has a switch to drop the output.

Q: 5. How can i get a replacement Mic Stand Adapter for P170?

A: It's an extremely common size. Almost any mic holder for a small diaphragm mic will work.

Q: 6. Hello, what dead cat furry wind protector would fit on these microphones? Both with a foam windshield and without. Thank you.

A: Auray WHF-2040 Foam Windscreen For 3/4" Diameter Microphones B&H # AUWHF2040: https://bhpho.to/31OUm9s WindTech Mic-Muff Microphone Windshield Fitted Fur Windscreen Cover for 1200 Series Windscreen B&H # WIMM120: https://bhpho.to/2uyH7h9

Q: 7. Is this mic gain hungry? Or does it have good amount of output? I am going to use Zoom H5 with this, and because it doesnt have the greatest preamps in the world, I need something with good power. (Good reference will be Nt1 or At2020, which I currentoy have. compare to them, is this mic at simiar level or noticably quieter?)

A: No. This Mic is NOT power hungry; its Sensitivity, at 14.6 mV falls in the middle category: Lewitt LCT 140 Performance Maximum SPL 135 dB SPL Peak Sensitivity 14.6 mV/Pa Dynamic Range 115 dB A-Weighted Equivalent Noise Level 20 dB A-Weighted Condenser microphones typically have a higher-than-“normal” sensitivity, at least as they compare to dynamic microphones, which usually have a much lower sensitivity. Depending on the application, For live/stage applications the sensitivity may present a problem. For Studio applications, usually less of an issue. Higher-sensitivity (condenser) microphones can be helpful in lower-SPL applications, such as recording dialogue or vocals. Most small diaphram condenser mics have medium sensitivity. If higher sensitivity (less gain hungry), you may want to consider other mics as shown in links below. Here is another Mic (albeit more expensive) to Consider, has higher gain: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1365779-REG/se_electronics_se_8_small_diaphragm_condenser_microphone.html/specs Performance Frequency Range 20 Hz to 20 kHz Maximum SPL Cardioid: 159 dB SPL Peak Impedance Cardioid: 110 Ohms Load Impedance 1 Kilohms Sensitivity Cardioid: 25 mV/Pa Signal-to-Noise Ratio Cardioid: 81 dB Equivalent Noise Level Cardioid: 13 dB A-Weighted

Q: 8. I need a hypercardioid mic for interior dialogue recording on a boom pole. Is it possible the this mic can deliver in such a task? Or is it too heavy. Too bulky? Thanks.

A: I use this mic in our studio on a C-stand and hand held for street interviews. I do have some shoots coming up in August where I am going to purchase a boom for it. It's definitely bulkier than a choir mic, but I love the sound (don't forget to put the hypercardioid adapter on it that comes in the box).Hope that helps,Jeff

Q: 9. Why do you need a match pair?

A: Hello Tom, A matched pair of microphones keeps them as accurate as possible for stereo recording techniques. If they are different, then the stereo image could potentially change. If you're recording in stereo, we highly recommend the matched pair.

Q: 10. Will this connect to an iPad USB?

A: Not directly. You would need mic cables, and a two channel audio interface for an iPad, such as B&H # IKIRIGPRODUO. Please note this setup is best used for recording audio in stereo. Any attempt to live stream would result in a single channel mono pickup, not stereo.

This is the second one of these I bought. After using the first one in our studio, I was really pleased with the quality of the construction and sound.
