Sonnet offers three SFP+ transceiver options (sold separately): a short-range multi-mode fiber module (up to 984'), part number G10E-SFP-SR; a long-range single-mode fiber module (up to 6.2 miles), part number G10E-SFP-LR; and a 10GBASE-T copper module, part number G10E-SFP-T (Cat 6A cable up to 328'). Alternatively, you can use cost-effective direct-attach Twinax copper cables up to 32.8' long (sold separately).

Simply connect the Twin10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 adapter to your computer via the included Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) cable, download and install a driver, install one or two SFP+ modules (sold separately), connect the adapter to the network switch or directly to 10GbE-enabled storage, and configure the adapter's settings through the macOS Network control panel or Windows Device Manager.

Functions such as flow control, 64-bit address support for systems using more than 4GB of physical memory, and stateless offloads such as TCP, UDP and IPv4 checksum offloading help to optimize the Twin10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 adapter's throughput performance and low host-CPU utilization. The adapter's dual 10GbE connections support transparent failover, which is designed to keep your computer connected in case a cable is disconnected or one of the ports fails. Link aggregation (teaming) for increased throughput is also supported.

Small enough to fit in most workspaces, the Twin10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 adapter is still large enough to support proper airflow inside the case. Its design helps the adapter's temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan to keep the adapter running cool and quiet, making it suitable for use in noise-sensitive environments. Constructed of rugged and lightweight aluminum, the adapter's outer shell is designed to securely protects the inner circuitry.

The Twin10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports: the first connects the adapter to your computer, while the second supports daisy-chaining of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripheral devices to a single port on your computer. The adapter includes 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 support, meaning you can connect a USB Type-C device to the second port using the proper cable or adapter. The Twin10G also provides full support for connecting two 4K displays at 60Hz or one 5K display at 60Hz. For connected devices requiring extra power, 15W is provided to connected bus-powered devices.

Sonnet includes a 1.6' Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect the Twin10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 Edition to your computer, plus a Sonnet ThunderLok 3 Thunderbolt connector retainer clip to secure the cable to the adapter. ThunderLok 3 is easy to install and use: just slide it over one of the cable's connectors, plug in the connector, and then secure it to the adapter by turning a thumbscrew. Because ThunderLok doesn't attach to the connector, it remains on the cable and won't get lost when not in use.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have heard these boxes can run hot, has that been anyone's experience?

A: Sonnet Solo10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is fanless, and utilizes passive cooling to cool itself, which would inevitably warm up the box. This is normal for this type of device.

Q: 2. IS THIS BACKWARD COMPATIBLE WITH THUNDERBOLT 2?

A: Sonnet Solo10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fanless Adapter requires full Thunderbolt3 bandwidth to function properly.

Q: 3. I just bought it but don't know which wire fits in the device to connect it to the Synoligy Nas

A: The Sonnet SOLO10G-SFP-T3 is not designed for use with a NAS, it is designed to connect a computer to your fiber network via Thunderbolt 3.

Q: 4. How bad is the fan noise?

A: The device has no fans. It uses passive heat dissipation for keeping cool(er).

Q: 5. Can this be used with a 2013 Mac that has a thunderbolt 1 connection if we use a TB2 to TB3 adaptor? I realize the speed with be slower, but will it work?

A: You would be able to use the Sonnet Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 to Dual-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on a older Mac computer using Thunderbolt and an adapter.

Q: 6. will this work, at a slower speed, on USB 3.1 Gen 1 Port (macbook 12")?

A: No this product requires a Thunderbolt 3 port on the computer.

Q: 7. is it compatible with linux?

A: The Sonnet Solo10G SFP+ Thunderbolt 3 to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fanless Adapter with Short-Range SFP+ Transceiver is macOS and Windows compatible, it dos not work with Linux.

Q: 8. Does this require an active TB3 cable? Or will a passive one also work?

A: This device can work with a passive Thunderbolt 3 connection, so long as the wire is within the length limit of passive TB3.

Q: 9. Can this be connected to a usb 3.1 gen 2 port and work well?

A: No, this is for use with a thunderbolt 3 equipped computer.

Q: 10. Is it possible to connect this directly into a Qnap NAS (MacBook Pro M1 - this adapter - NAS) - or does it have to go into a switch? Thanks

A: You can connect the adapter to a 10 Gb/s-capable switch, NAS, or other device using a cable that supports 10 Gb/s data speeds

So fast, so quiet, you cannot tell it has a fan inside. Stable connection with no drama, it is everything you expect it to be, the best product of its kind. Only issue I would point out is the front blue LED light is wayyyyy to bright, like 70% to bright. Why?

I use this to house WD and Seagate high performance 4TB NVMe drives and daisy chain a JBOD enclosure. I had been using separate ACASIS enclosures but got tired of disks disappearing, cable clutter, and heat. The Sonnet Dock has been reliable but delivers a lower data rate as expected. But it still meets my needs. At this point I'm willing to trade off raw performance for reliability.

I'm using the Sonnet echo with 2TB of NVME storage in RAID 0 as media cache for video editing with a Mac Studio Ultra. I was using SATA SSDs before but it's a waste not to max out the speed on a system capable of 5x SATA performance. Large Photoshop files, video playback, and renders feel noticeably quicker, though I don't have any benchmarks. Works flawlessly so far as most Sonnet products have for me in the past. Speeds are as advertised (5GB stress test) though I might eke out a bit more speed if I add heatsinks to the NVME sticks. Fast enough to deal with some flavors of 12k footage. Monitors plug in fine through the dock as well. I've only used it for a month but so far so good. Amusingly, the power brick is the same size as the unit and the blue LED basically doubles as a nightlight but that's easily solved with some tape.

I originally wanted to go with a 10gbe solution on my MBP 16 to my new Synology 1621+ nas with direct connection to the nas. I setup the nas with a raid 10 and am now getting 700 mbs read and 1k mbs write. Alot faster than a usb 3 external drive which was around 100mbs r/w. I'm now pretty happy and can edit photos from the external a lot faster. The device itself does get fairly hot but its protected by the rubber cover so it won't really do any damage to any surface its on. Also make sure to enable jumbo frames on your network card and the nas side as well and you should be good to go.

I installed a pair of Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 4TB M.2 drives in this unit and have them in a RAID 0 configuration. I'm running an old Intel Mac Mini, so speeds are not optimal, but the external drive is faster than Apple's internal SSD that came installed in the laptop. I have to put my ear right next to the dock in order to confirm the fan is running, so noise certainly isn't an issue.
