A: No, it is a continuous single piece. Both ends are threaded with standard microphone connections, one end male other female (5/8-27 I believe).

A: The stand is just over 8 high. Concert uke's are about 23 in length so this stand should work. It looks like a concert-sized ukulele in the image. Soprano's are typically about 16 in length.

A: I did not have to take the mechanism apart. All of ours are working very well and assembly was very easy. Maybe you have a defective unit and it should be replaced. Sorry I can't be of more help.
