Presenting a super wide field of view, the GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR from FUJIFILM is an ultra-wide 18mm-equivalent prime designed for the G-mount GFX camera system. Ideally suited for architecture and interior photography, the lens's design employs a pair of aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for accurate rendering, and a series of low dispersion elements are also featured for improved color accuracy and clarity. Additionally, a Nano GI coating has been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color. Balancing the optical attributes, the lens also utilizes a linear AF motor with an internal focusing design for quick and quiet focusing performance, and a manual aperture ring also avails intuitive exposure adjustment and a Command position permits making camera-based aperture selections. Additionally, the lens is also dust-, freeze-, and weather-resistant for use in trying environmental conditions.

Ideally suited for architectural, landscape, and interior photography, this wide-angle prime lens offers an 18mm equivalent focal length.

The 15 elements in 12 groups optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for cleaner, more realistic rendering and sharper image quality.

Two extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element are also featured to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved color fidelity and clarity.

A Nano GI coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

A linear AF motor is used for quick, quiet focusing performance and an internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall length of the lens during operation and also produces consistent optical performance throughout the focusing range.

Physical aperture ring allows for intuitive adjustment over exposure settings, and incorporates a C (Command) position to permit camera-based aperture setting.

Dust- and weather-sealed physical construction enables working in harsh climates and temperatures as low as 14°F.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Choices re Use of a cpl filter? 62mm? Can lens hood still be used? Or 43mm screwed into lens hood?

A: The FUJIFILM GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR Len works with CPL Filters that are 62mm thread. If the CPL has a 62mm front thread you can use the hood.

Q: 2. Does this have manual focus like the first 23mm or is it auto only like the 90mm?

A: This lens doesn't have a manual focus clutch like the 23mm 1.4 mark I. It is focused electronically.

Q: 3. Can this lens be used with the 1.4 teleconverter?

A: No, the FUJIFILM GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR Lens cannot be used with any teleconverters, like the FUJIFILM XF 1.4x TC WR Teleconverter (B&H # FUXF14TC).

Q: 4. Why does the listing specify this as 87mm (35mm Equivalent) when it's a 110mm lens? Typo?

A: All lenses are rate in terms of a full frame lens. So the FUJIFILM GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR Lens with UV Filter Kit is made for a medium format camera. So that lens on that camera is more like a 87mm lens. If you could put that on a full frame lens it would be 110mm.

Q: 5. Is there a FAST (wider aperture) version of his lens, like f/1.2 or f/2.8?

A: I'm sorry, no. There is not a faster version in this focal length.

Q: 6. I am considering a 120 macro for floral and close-up photography. I'm wondering if the 110 plus the 45 G WR extension tube would give me good floral/macro PLUS portraiture. I admittedly don't do many portraits, but would this idea give me a good two-for-one over just the 120 macro? I don't recall seeing photos of the 110 with macro-tube extension.

A: While you would not need an extension tube for portraiture photography, you may use the Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR Lens for portraiture, and you may add the use of the FUJIFILM MCEX-45G WR Macro Extension Tube so you may use the Fujifilm GF 110mm f/2 R LM WR Lens for close-up macro photography usage needs. The focal length would be slightly shorter than using the 120mm lens, but it would still be a good combination if you prefer the wider 110mm focal length for your portraiture usage needs. I think you'll be happy with the combination.

Q: 7. What is the f-stop equivalent (in 35mm)? Something like 1.4x1.5=f2.1?

A: Aperture (f-stop) values are equivalent across camera formats and sensor sizes.

Q: 8. Will this lens work on a X-T3?

A: This lens is for a medium format camera and is not compatible with the XT3. The XT3 takes X mount lenses.

Q: 9. Can this lens be converted to the Mamiya 645 mount?

A: Unfortunately it is not possible to adapt the FUJIFILM GF 32-64mm f/4 R LM WR Lens to the Mamiya 645 mount. The G-mount is a much shorter mount, and cannot be adapted to the longer Mamiya 645 mount.

Q: 10. The GF 23mm and 45-100mm share the same front element diameter(82mm). Would this Lens Hood fit on the 45-100mm?

A: No. The following lens hood is designed and made for the GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR Lens only.

I found this wide angle lens can out do my kit zoom lens at 33mm even up to 50mm. Although the pixels are less per angle of view degrees, the pixel edges are hit the mark on separating detail. Really an amazing feature.

Absolutely amazing lens. Sharp, fast, and wonderful contrast. The quality of the lens is stellar - as to be expected. Pricey, but worth every penny.

It is a great lens and very sharp even when wide open. Distortion and light fall-off are well controlled. With LM motor focusing is fast and silent. For a F4 lens it is really bulky, especially when compared with GF 20-35/4 lens. I wish it could be a GF23/3.5 or even 2.8 at the same size and price.

As a landscapes photographer, this lens was a must for me.
It's simply amazing, super sharp and exhibits almost no distortion.

When you want to apply a wide angle to landscape - which can make a very nice shot - this lens is fantastic. I took the shot of Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland planning to highlight the hexagonal rocks in the foreground. This lens allowed me to get rocks all the way to the horizon, plus some ocean blur and a good amount of sky. I have this shot in a 24x18 print and the detail and depth of field are incredible. (It was a 30-second exposure at f/29 with a polarizer.) I was able to take a number of nice shots, and the lens is easy to work with, but the quality of the shot is what matters most, and this lens was awesome.

The lens is super sharp, and no distortion but haven’t tried it out much due to the current virus epidemic.

I do like this lens, and it complements the 32-64mm f/4 and 110mm f/2 quite nicely. Build quality seems to be equivalent to the 110mm f/2, i.e., very good. Size and weight is reasonable, and I would rate overall image quality worthy of the asking price. Distortion is very well controlled, contrast and resolution are both impressive from f/4 and resolution peaks somewhere between f/8 – f/11 (although I often find myself using smaller apertures for depth of field reasons). Flare resistance is generally quite good provided you stick to reasonable apertures, although if you want extreme flare, you can have it by stopping down to f/32 and experimenting with the sun's location in the frame. On a related note, I'm not in love with the sunstars coming from the 23mm - not that they are bad, but I prefer the aesthetic of the sunstars from the 32-64mm f/4. I have attempted astrophotography with this lens, correction of comatic aberration at f/4 is good but not perfect in the extreme corners, although I'm not sure it really matters much - that f/4 maximum aperture combined with the high resolution of the GFX's sensor makes this lens/body combination less than ideal for astro. As for more traditional landscape photography, the lens does not disappoint - vignetting is minimal when stopped down, the corners are sharp, I don't see any sign of chromatic aberration.

A quick follow up to my review from 2020. Briefly, I still love this lens after owning for 5 years. I use it on both my GFX 50s and 100s. Typically my backpack has this lens, the GF 45mm, and the GF 120mm packed and ready to go, along with one GFX body. I can’t imagine ever leaving this behind, unless I eventually give in and get the 20-35mm zoom. ;^)
