Mixing advanced optics with contemporary performance, the Batis 135mm f/2.8 from ZEISS is a mid-length telephoto prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized as an apochromat, the Sonnar optical design, along with the use of eight anomalous partial dispersion elements, helps to effectively eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and rendering. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and illumination. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, this lens incorporates optical image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with slower shutter speeds and a dust- and weather-sealed construction lends itself to shooting in trying environments.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 202.5mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.

Apochromatic optical design utilizes eight anomalous partial dispersion elements to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Optical image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.9' to infinity.

Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.

Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.

Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens be compatible with any teleconverters. I have the Sony a7r ii ? Thank you

A: The ZEISS Batis 135 lens has not been tested with the Sony 1.4x or 2.0X Tele Converters. While these tele converters should be mechanically and electronically compatible with the Batis 135, the influence on the optical performance of the Batis lens is unknown at this time.

Q: 2. Is this a Tamron design , just like the other Batis lenses? Is there any original Zeiss designs for the Batis series like in the Loxia series?

A: All major lens manufacturers collaborate. To call any Zeiss lens a Tamron lens, etc., is to misunderstand what goes into the many different processes of design, engineering and manufacturing of a lens. Cosina manufactures the Otus line, allegedly, and what difference does that make? Would you complain if your BMW was made in Tennessee instead of Leipzig? Or vice-versa?

Q: 3. Does Sony's focus/eye focus work with this lens?

A: YesThat is what it was designed forIm very happy with it

Q: 4. How different is the optical construction between Batis and Milvus 2/135 ZF.2 lens?

A: The two ZEISS lenses are part of the Apo Sonnar family, but share different optical designs. The Batis 2.8/18 has 14 elements in 11 groups, whereas the Milvus 2/135 has 11 elements in 8 groups. They are both designed for demanding applications, especially when used with high resolution sensors.

Q: 5. Is the lens a 2.8 or 1.8 aperture? In the overview section it has both listed.

A: The ZEISS Batis 135 uses an aperture of f/2.8 in order to keep the size and weight compatible with the small A7/A9 camera platform. For more information, visit a href= http://www.zeiss.com/photo target= _blank www.zeiss.com/photo/a

Q: 6. what is this product's UPC code?

A: Correct, this is the same for all of the lenses 4 047865 800662 0000002136695

Q: 7. How is the searching in autofocus when doing macro work? Id be trading in my Nikon 105mm 2.8 for this Zeiss 135mm

A: Please note, the ZEISS Batis 2.8/135 is not a macro lens. The minimum focus distance is 2.9' and the magnification ratio is 1:5.3. Most macro lenses offer a 1:2 or 1:1 ratio.

Q: 8. is this lens compatible with sony alpha 7ii?

A: The ZEISS Batis lenses are compatible with any Sony E mount camera, including the A7II model.

Q: 9. How does the sharpness/contrast look wide open?

A: You can review the MTF chart for the ZEISS Batis 2.8/135 at the website below. The MTF data is produced at wide-open aperture and at f/5.6, the setting which produces the maximum contrast and sharpness. You will see the lens produces excellent results at wide-open aperture, which is improved only slightly in the corners when stopped down. a href= https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/batis-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-batis-28135.pdf target= _blank https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/batis-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-batis-28135.pdf/a

Q: 10. Is the lens hood reversible for storage?

A: Yes, the lens shade on the ZEISS Batis 135 is reversible.

I was waiting forever for the Sony 70-200mm F4 to come down another hundred dollars, considering that the price for the same lens in the Canon edition is less than $900. The other lens I had my eye on for my Sony a 7 III was the Zeiss Batis 135 F 2.8. The 70-200 would bring me closer to wild life (I live in the country and don't have the money for a 200-600mm lens), the Batis 135 would gather more light for indoor dance and band photos. The Batis price came down first and I so bought it, not sure whether it was a wise move. I have used it now for two weeks, mostly to photograph late-in-the-day and under-the-lights soccer games, and while the telephoto reach is marginal for such events, the images are tack-sharp and color popping at 1/800, F 4, and ISO 1000. A sweet lens, and actually smaller and lighter than my Sony FE2.8/90 Macro G OSS, also a great lens. I will keep this Batis.

The Zeiss 135 mm is outstanding, very sharp on my Sony a7R3 it does have a very narrow depth of field at closer focusing distancing from camera .but does the job i wanted for portraiture. It is definitely a great light gathering lens even at night.

I had previously thought about this lens based on the fact a sharp lens from Zeiss also usually delivers color depth and that Zeiss presence. This lens does not disappoint, and instead confirms the necessity for high quality optics with Sony’s 60 Mpixel A7RV. So sharp that cropping does not lower photo quality. Thanks B&H for offering this lens at a great discount, further enhancing my investment. Wow!

the lens is noticeably sharper and has more contrast than my Sony lenses. Autofocuse is fast and silent. I am totally pleased with this lens with one major exception; why is it so big? You buy a mirrorless camera for the smaller body, but all the lenses are monsters. All my Nikon lenses for film cameras used 52mm filters, this one uses 67mm. I still like the lens and the free Zeiss filter they throw in with it make it especially appealing.

I wanted to get the 70-2000 GM for event videos but couldnt quite stomach the huge price tag - Instead I bought this guy used with the intent that if I needed to hit 200 I just punch in to aps-c mode on my A7III.

What I love about this lens is that it is light enough that I can use it with my gimbal ( ZY Crane-V2). And with the optical stabilization, it is very smooth shooting. As i mentioned earlier, I can get a decent amount of reach, especially if I crop in with the aps-c (which I only do sparingly)

I think I will still eventually purchase the 70-200mm after a few more gigs because I often find myself in spots where  dropping down to 70mm would make my life easier. But for now this guy is getting the job done pretty well.

Because of neck issues, I can not use a full telephoto & during the pandemic I have been trying to photograph birds in the backyard. This does an excellent job.

Along with my Zeiss 24 mm and my 55 mm Sony Zeiss these are my favourite lenses for my 7R III ! Ultrasharp and rich saturation ... I could immediately see the difference between this lens and my zoom lens. I wished I had bought this earlier as it would have made a difference in a photo assignment I had in Maroc.
