Building on the success of the well-regarded CP.2 lenses, ZEISS's CP.3 Compact Prime Lenses offer the same full-frame sensor coverage and classic ZEISS look in an updated form factor and with improved mechanics and lens coatings. This 50mm Compact Prime lens is derived from the same classic optical formula as the preceding CP.2 variant and shares the same physical length as the 15, 18, 21, 25, 28, 35, and 85mm CP.3 lenses while maintaining identical focus and iris gear positioning with the entire set of CP.3 lenses, relative to the mount. All CP.3 lenses also share the same 95mm front diameter. Similar physical attributes across the lens line makes fitting lens accessories such as matte boxes, follow focuses, lens supports, and lens control motors easier and less time consuming.

Another feature handed down from the preceding CP.2 lenses is the interchangeable mounts. This lens comes with a Canon EF mount installed. Though, if you wish to fit your CP.3 lens to a different camera, the lens mount can be swapped by the user for a separately available mount of a different kind. If you like the bokeh in your images to be round, even after stopping down, you will be pleased to know that the 14-bladed iris, made famous by the CP.2 lenses, has been retained.

Note: While the CP.3 lenses are designed for a degree of user-serviceability regarding the mount, for ideal performance and calibration, B&H recommends that mount swaps and other lens adjustments be done by a trained lens technician at a service center.

Zeiss lenses are known for their clean and crisp image rendering. The CP.3 series of lenses is no different. This CP.3 lens will accurately color-match to other Zeiss cinema lenses inside and out of the CP.3 range. The CP.3 lenses feature improved lens coatings and anti-reflection masking over the CP.2 range for increased contrast and reduced flare, important for capturing content with the intent of an HDR-format release.

For enhanced ergonomics over the previous-generation CP.2 lenses, the CP.3 lens barrel has been reshaped to be more similar to the renowned Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses. This new shape is easier to handle, and takes up less physical space than the original Compact Prime design. An even weight distribution ensures that these lenses will be at home handheld, locked down on a tripod, or flown on a Steadicam or motorized gimbal.

I've been a Canon 1.4 user for quite some time and after Zeiss appeared on the market and reading a couple of not very good reviews about it I quickly lost interest it. Well, last week my Canon AF started having issues and quite frankly I was not that impressed with it (it was an Ok lens and not a wow lens) I decided to explore other options. Thank goodness a guy on photo@ directed me to try out Zeiss. Plus after reading positive reviews here it was pretty much sealed. Got the lens today and after doing some testing I was really impressed with it. It is at least as sharp as Canon wide open but at smaller apertures IMO it clearly beats Canon. On top of it you get incredible colors. Canon is simply lifeless comparing to Zeiss. The build is exactly what a lens should be. And I especially like the manual focusing. Viewfinder is pretty useless and you will get a lot of out of focus images so I suggest using LiveView at 10x.

If you like and know how to use manual focus this is for you! I have never seen a bokeh like that!, it Is just fantastic...artistic! It is easy to use the manual focus with this consistent focus ring... Smooth! Its really impressive to make videos and still pictures...even when used with aperture under 2.0 You just have to know what you would like to do and the possibilities in use fast apertures. You will get cristal clear images. Fantastic! The color you get are the truth color! Really nice!

I have rented a few lens to make sure it fits my style of photography and the Cannon 50mm by Zeiss does it for me.. ..... The pictures are crystal clear and my fellow photographers always ask what lens did you use to get the results. The rental convinced me this is the one to have and was glad B&H got it back in stock.

This is the best 50mm lens I've used. I find it sharper than the Canon f1.2, both fantastic lenses, but I find this one gave me a fantastic deal. I use it mainly for film work, but some photography. This is a great lens and I would recommend it to anyone interested in professional photo/film.

Purchased after I lost my 50mm 1.4 canon lens on a video shoot. Considered replacing with same, but then looked to this as an alternative. As I manually focus on video mode anyway, autofocus was not a critical feature. Verdict after 1 film shoot: this Zeiss is my new favorite lens.

This lens is pretty amazing. I use my camera, 5D Mark II, primarily for video. The focus ring is so smooth, and the feel is so nice that I almost don't even want to use my Canon 24-105mm f/4L. The Zeiss feels so solid and looks beautiful aesthetically that it will make you feel good putting it on your camera. It isn't as fast as the Canon 50mm f/1.2L, but I feel as though that extra half stop isn't worth it. I rented the Canon before and was blown away by it when I first used it, but I feel like the Zeiss is just as good, if not better. It's build allows for better control and produces just about as good images. Also if you are shooting wide open on either lens be careful about keeping your subject in focus because the field of focus is really shallow. Bottom line is I would recommend this lens to anyone. I'd say it is used best with natural lighting and close ups/conversation scenes. I would also recommend getting the B+W 58mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter, to prevent dust, dirt, etc. from getting in the lens.

I love this lens, I use it constantly and it never lets me down. It's my secret weapon, with the 1.4 fstop I can use it in low lighting situations and still get rich vivd images. I absolutely can't live without it.

I am a Cinematographer and the clarity and fastness of this lens is great. Little to no vignetting at all in the corners wide open. Love it. Thought it would be weird having no F-stop ring, but I quickly got use to it.

I bought this lens at the same time as a Canon 24-105 f4L and it practically lives on my camera now. Beautiful color and sharpness. The next lens I buy will be a Zeiss.
